  1. http://www.perpendicularpress.com/math6.html It's really a wonderful book. We will be using it after PM6 also. K
  2. I wanted him to do the note taking/writing from the chapter so he learns how to take notes from a textbook. I am hearing from most here that the workbooks with the end of section/chapter reviews will be enough. You are probably right. We are planning on using HO for history, I guess he will get the note-taking in with that. Thanks again for your advice. I needed a reality check on what I was planning, and you all gave it to me. My ds will appreciate it!! K
  3. Did you use the workbooks? If not, what did you use? I started my planning based on using only the hardback text and creating a science notebook. Here's my plan: -Read each section (green title) -change each subsection (purple heading) into a question and answer -define words in bold -complete Checkpoints at end of section -complete Section Review -perform Real World Lab or Skill Lab -Chapter Review (could this be used as a test?) Does this sound feasible? I have a reluctant writer (he'd love worksheets), so I know I'm going to have to do a lot of hand holding until he gets up to speed on note-taking. I'd love to hear any ideas... Thanks K
  4. who loved Disney report to me that he'd never attend Gay Day in Disney after his experience there. This article reflects the story he told me... http://www.wdwinfo.com/disney-gay-days.htm He and his partner took his niece and nephew with them and he was very upset to have the experience tainted by outrageous behavior.
  5. :iagree: I don't think we can create an inclusive society by emphasizing everyone's differences and placing higher values on some (minority) than others (majority). I think we are stronger when we can find common ground. Just my .02 K
  6. You can take 123 to Route 1 (woodbrige/occoquan area) and take route 1 all the way down through Triangle to the park. The entrance to the park is on Route 1, just past the Marine Corps Museum on the right. If you can't make it, perhaps we can meet up in a park in the Fairfax/Burke area (northwestern) vs. Triangle (southeast) in the fall. I'd love to meet you and welcome MamaLynx to the area. K
  7. I was able to get ours from a Toys R Us when all other stores were sold out (Best Buy, Target, Walmart). I went to TrU in the middle of the week, in the middle of the day. I asked to clerk in the electronics/gaming section and she asked her manager if they had any. The manager brought me one from the back - they hadn't put them out on the shelves yet. My dh was able to obtain one during his lunch hour at a TrU near his work. Again, mid-day, mid-week. So, I vote for trying TrU. K
  8. I only gave in because some of the games require you to get off your butt. The Wii games such as Wii Sports, Carnival, Game Party are fun to play in groups and are more family oriented than what's available on other systems. There are games that are available for the Wii that are just like other systems, but I steer clear of them. There are better graphics for sure, but I'm not looking to replicate real life. As far as the life span of the Wii, I don't know. I've heard complaints about all the gaming systems dying out early. I know that all these systems have cooling fans and they need them to support the graphics and speed of the processors, so that could be an issue. It could be they are more fragil than the older systems. I don't know. We bought the extended warranty, hope I won't need it. My kids are still jealous of their friends with PS3's and Xboxes, but oh well!
  9. It's basically a road that loops around for about 1.5 miles through a wooded area. On the outside of the loop are the batting cage, putt-putt, playgrounds, picnic areas, an 8 acre man-made lake (adjacent to I-95, how's that for tranquil?) and lots of trees. The 3 picnic areas are named after flowers and I can't remember or get their webpage to load up. The golf shop is on the left as you enter the park. Perhaps we could all meet there? I will try to get a map up. K
  10. that I could copy? I'm trying to draw up a contract with my 11 yo ds. PS starts in 6 weeks and I'd just love to send him..... I can only come up with lists like - I will not "parent" my siblings... I will not call anyone derogatory names.... I will not boss everyone around.... I'd like something with fewer "not" statements... TIA! K
  11. You have given me much to think about today. I've always had trouble with joining groups because of the leaders that have the "jump through these hoops" mentality. I had a former friend/mom who actually admitted that she was looking only for followers for her co-op. If there was another mom that exhibited leadership skills or had different ideas, she'd quietly force them out when it was time to plan another semester. She never could get me trained, or get me to join "her" co-op, so she dropped me;). Never have I been so glad to be excluded....
  12. Locust Shade (near Quantico) has lots of shade. It's small and a bit close to 95 - you can see the highway through the trees!, but it's got lots of trees and SHADE. Man, can you tell I'm tired of the heat? I'm up for anywhere in PWC. I'm sure there are other parks in the area, but I haven't been to them in years. Looking forward to meeting you all. I've finally perfected my potato salad and I need to share it! K
  13. my musical taste is all over the place... Diana Krall to Gwen Stefani! Rob Thomas to Johnny Cash.... My recent fav: Brett Dennen (homeschooled, from CA)
  14. And I'd love to meet up with you folks for a park day. I'm just south in Stafford. My dh grew up and works in Woodbridge. We met at the Woodbridge campus of NOVA back in '85. Small world. K
  15. 1970 something Pinto Station Wagon, brown with wooden accents (gift from my stepfather, he paid $50 for it) 1969 Karman Ghia - Blue, with rusted out heater boxes. Semi-auto. Bought it because my bf at the time said he could keep in running. He didn't, so I left him for a Honda guy....kinda kidding... 1979 Honda Civic (Green, 1200 Hatchback). Heat worked just fine. So did boyfriend who kept it running and he's now my dh....Dh had a matching white one that he tricked out - weren't we cute! Carpooled in it. Please imagine me and 3 co-workers, who all were into powerlifting and weighed in all over 200 lbs, in a 79 Civic. They had great attitudes about it. 1983 Honda Accord: LOVED this car. Commuted in it. Drove so smoothly with 120K miles on it. Sold it. 1986 Civic Sedan: Automatic, grandma car. Commuted in it. Sold it to make room for 92 Civic. Dh had a Honda Hurricane 1000cc motorcycle. Was promptly sold when we got pregnant. Current vehicles: 92 Honda Civic, 03 CRV (from MIL), 89 Accord (dh commuter), and an '03 Dodge Diesel Truck (grunt, grunt, grunt).

  18. That's what ebay is for. I have photographs and letters from my grandparents as well as many memories. Those I keep. The rest is just stuff. Don't feel guilty. K
  19. send a Notification of Intent to Home School (NOI) to your county's Superintendent. Here's a link for more info: http://www.vahomeschoolers.org/
  20. So, I'm looking to do more history and science that they can do independently, in separate rooms if I can swing it. I too envy those with kids that can work on something together without the competition. K
