  1. I started on the 18th, too. Or restarted. Anyway - here we are :)
  2. Expose him to some cute babies? We have our fourth because some baby cooed at dh on an airplane. He came home and said we should try for a fourth. I thought I was done at 3.
  3. Me, too. My teenagers refuse to wear coats at all. It doesn't matter how cold it is. I guess I can console myself with how much safer they are in the car without coats.
  4. Taking full advantage of my couple days break. I made it to day 10. Tonight is the dinner party, but I still ate a compliant breakfast and will have a compliant lunch as well. I decided that, since I'm not technically W30 today, I'd weigh myself. I lost 7 pounds in 10 days. :) It is actually kind of amazing that I can eat full, good meals, rarely get hungry (and if I do get hungry it's usually my own fault for not having a balanced enough meal), and not really feel deprived food-wise and still lose that much weight. I even exercised *less* than I regularly do. I skipped two or three scheduled gym days. Looking forward to starting again with Day 1 on the 18th.
  5. That does help, thanks! I figured I'd take advantage of the break - tomorrow we're having dd's birthday dinner and she requested Beef Wellington and chocolate cake - so I'll have a little bit of both of those (since I'll spend all afternoon making them). The 18th will be my new day 1.
  6. If it was my neighbour or some other friend, I totally would. But, this is dh's boss's wife and I don't want to require a special meal at her dinner party. I'm trying to look at the bright side. One good thing to come of this is that it will force me to extend my Whole 30 time. I'll start with Day 1 again on Sunday, so I'll have had 10 Whole 30 days, one day off, and then a (hopefully) full Whole 30 after that. I am noticing a lot of benefits from being on W30 already and just hope that one day doesn't throw things off too much. Starting over at day 1 on Sunday isn't the end of the world. I really want to change my eating habits and I feel like the extra time with the discipline of a W30 will help me achieve that.
  7. I'd be happy to fake it at a bigger party, but you're right - it's a small group. Sit down dinner. Eight of us. I usually look forward to events like that. Oh, well. I hope that if I start with Day 1 again on Sunday that one day off won't make a huge difference in how I feel. I don't really want to Kill All The Things again.
  8. So sad :( Day 9 and we've been invited to dh's boss's house for a dinner party on Saturday. There is *no way* I'm going to tell dh's boss's wife that I can't eat dairy, soy, sugar, etc. Ugh. I will eat as compliantly as humanly possible, but I don't think it will be possible to stick to Whole 30. I have done so well so far - I guess I start again on day 1 on Sunday. :(
  9. I'm the same way. I never did get overly excited about celebrities or musicians - even as a teen. I remember seeing friends' rooms that were plastered with posters and thinking that was weird. I guess if I was never a huge fan while they were alive it makes sense that celebrity deaths don't bother me. I grew up with a lot of media, but I've never felt emotionally attached to a celebrity.
  10. I think she meant that there is sugar in table salt, the sugar is in the form of dextrose?
  11. I loved Hamilton. I was on the edge of my seat for the entire performance. It was so funny and witty and intelligent and incredible. And I'm not even an American. I still have songs from Hamilton running through my head and we saw it back in September. I'm not surprised Lin-Manuel Miranda won a "genius" award - he seriously is a genius. I'm absolutely in awe of him.
  12. I made the Salmon L'Afrique du Nord last night from the Well-Fed cookbook (still my favourite Whole 30 cook book). Last time I made it we bbq'd it, but last night I cooked it in the oven in a glass dish and I think I like it better like that. I roasted butternut squash in the oven with coconut oil and salt and pepper and then steamed some green beans. All my kids loved the salmon, which says something. I was happy to have something that wasn't chicken breast or ground beef. http://meljoulwan.com/2010/05/06/moroccan-grilled-salmon/ And - a non-scale victory! I feel so much more *awake* now! One of the reasons I finally committed to a Whole 30 was because of how run-down and tired I was feeling all the time. Now, it's like things have cleared and I have energy and motivation and I just feel much more present.
  13. No idea. One of the Whole 30 rules is not weighing yourself during the Whole 30. We're supposed to be concentrating on Non Scale Successes.
  14. Me, too! My first Whole 30 was done a year ago before Christmas - in fact, I think I ended on day 28 because of a Christmas party. So there was no reintroduction phase at all. I am pretty sure that sugar gives me headaches. And that baked goods give me heartburn. I am definitely going to plan out the reintroduction phase this go around.
  15. I only do audio books for driving. I find that my mind wanders, too. I've tried listening while cleaning the house or ironing, but for some reason I can't do it. But, listening to books while driving is fantastic.
  16. I have a number of books going at once. I always have an Audible book for when I'm driving. I have a Kindle on the go for emergencies (stuck in a drive-thru, the check-out, etc.) and then I have actual books, too. I am usually in the middle of one short story collection and one novel and sometimes I also have a non-fiction on the go. Even so, I only read 42 books last year. I'm really committed to reading more this year. I've already finished three and am about 20 pages from finishing my fourth this year. My problem is that I get pretty sleepy at night, so I end up watching TV instead of reading. I was reading last night and actually fell asleep on the couch at 8:30 :(
  17. I'm all for slow progression, too. My kids also do ITF Taekwon-do. Dd earned her black belt at 13 - after six years of Taekwon-do. She did many classes per week and travelled to a lot of competitions for years. I think she earned her second degree at 15 - she competed in World's in Spain as a second degree when she was 17. I can't remember what the rules are for junior black belts and I think they may have changed within the last few years - it could be that they have the white and black belt (jr. black belt) until they're 18? Ds earned his jr. black belt at 15 after being in Taekwon-do for nine years. The school we're in now seems a lot quicker to advance students than the previous school we were with. And the black belt test was very different for ds than the one that dd did years ago with our other school. I would rather have them take a long, long time and then really earn it. There's a maturity that comes from devoting that many years of your life to working hard for something and I question whether that can really be developed in 3 to 4 years with young kids.
  18. I am female and over 18 years of age and these would be my reasons for voting no.
  19. I love to read while I eat and I happily endorse the behaviour in my kids. The only time I don't allow it is when we're having dinner with dh.
  20. I bought the Whole 30 book this time around and tried the walnut crusted pork tenderloin last night for dinner. Even the kids liked it. I decided that since I'll save money on eating out this month that I would splurge on some convenience foods so I bought Wholly Guacamole from Costco as well as pre-cooked beets from Costco. I love beets. Breakfast this morning was leftover steamed broccoli from last night sautéed with a beet in coconut oil and scrambled eggs. Luckily I've been drinking black coffee for years, so I'm still enjoying my regular cup of coffee in the morning.
  21. That is my absolute favourite breakfast. I'm on day 1 right now. I bought a big bag of smoothie veggies from Costco - washed and chopped kale, beet greens, carrot and something else. Instead of using them in a smoothie, I'm sautéing them. I had the veggies and added zucchini in and ate those along with two fried eggs for breakfast. Lunch was cauliflower, more smoothie veggies, and cut up chicken breast. I'm trying not to think about the chocolate that I forgot to get rid of. I gave just about all of the leftover Christmas chocolate to my dd (who lives near the university) but I forgot about some of it.
  22. How nice! I got a compliment from my nearly-20 year old the other day, too. She said we handed her first boyfriend (at 17) really well and that if we had handled it differently she might have ended up married to him (yikes!).
  23. My parents separated when I was 7. I don't remember what they told me about it. I don't remember much at all from that far back. I think the best thing my parents did was remain friends. They could always talk to each other, there was never any animosity between them. They're still friends - they play some word game over Facebook and have been for years. There were a number of years (almost 10) where we had two family vacations each year when everyone would come to my home and stay for a week or so - over Christmas and then in the summer. It was really nice for everyone to spend time with them both without any weirdness.
  24. I knew way more about homeschooling when my eldest was in grade 2.
  25. Here, on the edge of Canada, too - $7.99 for a head of cauliflower that didn't even look great. Thankfully, there's Costco. I got a whole bag of cauliflower florets for $4.99. Fil was visiting and put a bag of grapes into my cart at the local grocery store - they were $14.80. He just about had a heart attack.
