  1. Has anyone ever done this? I want both modern and classic lit choices. I love ELTL, but Bravewriter is calling to me. Could I just rotate between the two during the year? How much grammar does The Arrow have in it?
  2. Hi all! Where would you place this student? She is coming out of private school, going into 7th grade but probably more of a 6th grade level. She is dyslexic but has been through a dyslexia tutoring program. She can handle the physical act of writing well but does still struggle with comprehension when she has to read on her own. That's something we are working on. I am tutoring her this year for her first year of being homeschooled. She has used mainly Abeka since 3rd grade but this year they are branching out to make school more fun. She will be using either ELTL level 4 or 5 but I'm thinking she might need some additional writing instruction and W&R seems to dovetail nicely with ELTL. Thoughts?
  3. Yeah, I'm not seeing any history pockets in Ancients or middle ages. Actually, on my first look through it seemed rather simplistic. It does seem to amp up a little as you go. I guess I will give a review once we get to going. I'll be using it with a 7th grader and my friend will be using it with a 6th grader.
  4. Ami I missing something? I have History Odyssey Level 2 ancients and see no history pockets scheduled. They are scheduled in level 1 but not in level 2. I am so confused.
  5. Hi all! I am trying to compile of list of age-appropriate books to go over the basics of early puberty and reproduction with my girls. It will mainly be for my 8 1/2 year old. I want to start this conversation now so hopefully it won't be so candid later. Any suggestions to put on my list?
  6. I would probably start with level 2. My 8 year old (going into 3rd grade) is still doing level 2 and it is plenty. She is a wonderful reader. Honestly, you can read the books from this to him. You can work on his reading and fluency using easier books. His listening comprehension should be able to handle these books just fine. :)
  7. Do you know how long this sale is going on?
  8. I will take this into consideration. For what it's worth, the private school she goes to is only about $5k for a year. We live in a very low cost of living area.
  9. I will be doing the planning and curriculum choosing myself. The mother feels that I am more equipped to handle this with my background. This also gives me options to still incorporate some "family" learning in there as well. I expect there will be some adjusting to be done during the year with getting used to having another child in the house. Both my children, at this point, don't really take super long to get school done. They will be in 1st and 3rd. Thankfully, there are already back ups in place for sick days and things of that nature. The mom actually works from home 3 weeks out of each month. I plan to speak with her about tax issues next time I speak with her to find out how she wants to go about taking care of that. Thank you for this! I have considered how it will take attention away from my own. I think my kids would rather I do this than the work I am currently doing from home. I just hope it works out as well as it seems it will!
  10. Okay, so I am going to have an extra student for the new year. I have already checked on legal issues and things of that nature. The mom and I met again today and she wants to go ahead with this set up. I told her what my minimum acceptable fee is (which is pretty darn low, lol), but she feels like I might be short hanging myself possibly. Any ideas for how to charge for this? She will pay me a separate amount for anytime I watch her daughter other than schooling, so I just need info regarding how to charge for the school part of our day. She is 12 years old and going into 6th/7th grade. Any help ladies?? TIA
  11. I have already thought of this but thank you for mentioning it. I think the way that it will really work is that she is okay with the choices are make for our content subjects. For skill subjects, I might suggest sticking with BJU unless they are not working for her - simply for continuity's sake. The mother wants to keep at least a couple of subjects at home, but that will be hard since she works more than full time.
  12. These are all great questions! I don't know as of yet. We have only talked initially once but we are getting together to go over this more. I know which group she went through a dyslexia tutoring program with, so it would be easy to find out what was used. The mom could also get that info. I will definitely look into those two resources. I'm not sure yet if she owns a Kindle. I do own an iPad that uses Whispersync though that she could use here and I have no doubt her mom would buy a Kindle if I thought she needed it. We use Whispersync and loved it. She is currently using BJU at the private school she is at. I'm not sure yet if she is doing well with it though. I had already planned on asking about that since math struggles sometimes coexist with dyslexia. If we plan to move forward, I plan to get together with her early summer to see where she is and make sure we have her placed in appropriate programs. i am pretty certain she was fully evaluated. From what I have been told so far, the evaluation was in 3rd grade. They felt for the years before that that there was just something a little bit off. I will find out if she has that paper work. Thank you!
  13. Hi all! I wasn't sure how to word this so I'll just have it. **Disclaimer** I have already checked the legality of this in our state and since I am a certified teacher, I would be considered a private tutor and this would all be legal (holy run-on sentence....it's still early). Without going into too much detail, a mom I know from working in a daycare has asked me to help homeschool her child. She is 12 years old and going into the 6th grade. I have known this girl since she was 3 years old. I'm confident she and I can be successful with this. She is dyslexic but has been through a specialized tutoring program and has graduated from it. I'm prepared to deal with modifying what she needs and working with any issues that arise from this. Any suggestions from people who might have done this? This could be a great opportunity for my family. We have been praying about me leaving my work from home job. We don't always need my small income but we were building our savings with it to get in a better place. The hours have become very complicated though and I am slowly becoming super frazzled. I feel like this could be a wonderful answer and would fit into our schedule much better. I really just want some experiences or suggestions. My girls are going into 1st and 3rd and are very excited at this prospect. I already have ideas of how we could study the same time period as long as the mom is okay with what we are using. The mom and I will be meeting this week, so I wanted to get some advice from others before then. Thank you!
  14. So are you saying that you have found the writing in ELTL to not be enough long term? I have been concerned with that. That's one reason I have thought of using Writing & Rhetoric alongside it.
  15. I guess I need to look at the samples of Level 4 to get an idea of what I think. I'm almost 50/50 CM and classical. What a place to be! I love her program though. I want a little more formal writing instruction or maybe just have her writing more than she has this year. I know that in level 3, she will do a written narration every 2 weeks (which I kind of like).
  16. Hi! I'm on the fence of which level to use for my up and coming 3rd grader next year. She is currently doing level 2 and is about 1/3 of the way through. We didn't find it until January this year. We absolutely love it. I am tempted to bump her up to level 3 at the start of our new school year though. If I bumped her up, I could use the dictation and writing in that guide to cover spelling and writing. She is a natural speller and I have really been on the fence of what to do with her. My other thought is to continue level 2 and add in Spelling Power and Writing & Rhetoric Fable along with it. She is also a very strong reader, so we shouldn't have any issues with the material. Thoughts on this? I already own both level 2 and level 3. My 1st grader will also start level 1 this year.
  17. I'm following this as well. We are loving Miquon Orange but I think I want to add in Singapore 1 for my almost 1st grader.
  18. I'm just going to have her read the books. I used the Beyond guide with my oldest daughter and I'm co dissent we will be fine on our own. It was only 3 comprehension questions for each chapter. :)
  19. Can you say why you think SSL wouldn't be enough for a 3rd grader?
  20. Right now, I have the teacher's guide, 1 workbook and the CD. I got all that from a mom here for $20. I was originally going to do SSS but thought we would give this a try for the price. I'm super excited about it!
  21. Hi all! Anyone here use Song School Latin? It looks like a fun way to learn. I will have a 3rd and 1st grader next year. Would it be appropriate for both of them?
  22. We have used MFW K, MFW 1st and MFW Adventures and we haven't made it all the way through any of them. We liked them okay, but it just wasn't as good of a fit as I wanted.
  23. I'm think we will definitely drop dance. Doing so, would save over $1000 per year and make it even more possible for me to leave work as soon as I can. The co-op stays. The girls truly enjoy it and they get some quality classes that I can't do at home. My oldest gets to take karate, choir, violin and things like that. It's definitely a good bang for our buck. I'm torn on the other 2. I lean more towards keeping AHG even though it's a 20 minute drive. I think the girls enjoy it more than AWANA. They do camping trips and things of that sort. It has definitely been a good experience. We will weigh our options over the summer. The co-op meets on Fridays btw.
