  1. What have you called the RS course if you've used the 2nd year for 9th grade. I didn't know if I should call it 1/2 credit intro to bio. And 1/2 credit earth science, or something diff.
  2. We are doing Sonlight's core G this year for 8th. I have a 2011 program. I'm basically having my son read all of the books, and when there is time, we discuss the book. I do not like the way it is organized and I've tried to put the information behind the weeks, but it doesn't always line up. My son likes the books well enough. We haven't touched the timeline or mapwork. I'd love to do the 2nd half of this core in 9th. Is core H organized any better with the newer changes? I would also like to cover core 100 one year, probably for 10th grade. Did Sonlight's changes improve core H? Did they change core 100 also? My other thought was to just cover MFW history, but I wasn't sure how to order my years. I do not want to cover ancients since we are covering the first part of history this year. I think we've only covered ancients and early American history really well, but we've missed out on everything between or after those. Any suggestions on the best order/programs to use would be appreciated. I am not a textbook fan, so I'd like to keep him reading great books in some type of program. I've had friends suggest Notgrass, but I've not seen those. Thank you. Alison
  3. I'd love to know how everyone is doing with EIW. We're using 3 levels and are on lessons 11 and below. I'm not sure how well my kids are retaining things, and I've discovered I haven't any idea how to use commas :). Alison
  4. Can you tell me how the audio sounds for the 9th grade. We're using 3rd, 5th, and 6th. I like the worksheets, although I've found a few mistakes. However, the audio could be much better. Alison
  5. I received an email response on some questions I asked them a few weeks ago and received a response from Dr. Dobbins. I think he's still playing catch up. Alison
  6. Thanks. Everything you answered is how we thought it should be. I guess they are just mistakes in our key.
  7. My family has never been to the beach and would love to make a trip. Does anyone know the cheapest time to go south, but still warm enough to enjoy the beach and get in the water? Any recommendations on places to stay? If you have some ideas, please pm me. Thank you Alison
  8. IF you have VL, we're on 5B and stuck. Keep in mind, I do not know latin, my son is taking it. So, on questions 12, 15, and 16, I don't understand the answers. Can someone with the program explain it to me so I can tell my son. For all you latin pro's, we are given words with diff. endings and are supposed to tell which case they are. For aqua, it says dative and ablative, but it looks like from the table we have that it should be nominative and ablative. For aquis what are the cases? And for zebra? Thank you Alison
  9. Thank you all very much. I appreciate all of your suggestions.
  10. FYI, it worked great on our old computer, but it's hardly working on the new one. Our computer is just a few months old, and I'm not sure what win. Program it is. I have the latest typing instructor.
  11. BTW, look on the Logic stage board, there's a recent post at the top about RS. Apparently the owner has just returned back to USA, and is working on things. However, I'm sure he's behind so it might be awhile. Alison
  12. I ordered about 5 weeks ago and it took about 2.5 weeks to receive my order. Communication wasn't very well between them, because my order was later than expected, but I am very, very happy with the products. I've seen it suggested that the family may be out of the country. I think the website is messing up, and possibly no one is there to fix it. That's my hope at least, I don't want them to go out of business. I like what I've seen and would like to buy other programs from them.
  13. Do some kids just need to type their work instead of writing it out by hand? Last week my son had a short assignment and when he turned it in, I had him repeat it. It was extremely sloppy and had capitals where they were not supposed to be. His 2nd, and typed attempt was much better. He just handed in a poor attempt of a story. Handwritten, and not looking like he is trying to be neat at all. He looks like my writing does when I'm making a grocery list for myself. I could have him type his papers, but will that hurt him in the future? In public school or college, are papers ever hand written anymore? I'm trying to figure out how much this should matter:). Alison
  14. I'm sorry y'all. I've tried calling a few times myself, to ask a few questions. I haven't had anyone answer. They do need some work on customer service, however, I'm very happy with the program.
  15. If you want to go back to MUS, you can print extra worksheets out from their site. I flip flopped our first few years of school. My son would always hit major brick walls in math. It took me awhile before I decided that for us there wasn't one curriculum out there that worked for him. I just had to slow down and not push him through the book to get done. I chose math u see because I thought it had more common sense than other programs. But, we still hit those brick walls. We just either stop on that concept for awhile and do review, or slowly go through the program each day. I try to take things like a turtle, even though I want to be through those books like a rabbit!
  16. Great replies, thank you. I am not offended by the blunt statement at all. I think she meant that they never totally completed the book, but I'm really not sure. I'll have to find out. Our state has pre college curriculum requirements for public schools, and it's there, in smaller print that they say prealgebra does not count for a credit. I do not have to follow that, and I'm a bit confused as to why they point that out when the colleges are just saying the 3 classes. Can anyone offer insight as to why prealgebra is not considered credit worthy? Alison
  17. Thanks all for the suggestions. I am in a state where I do not have to worry about what the public schools do. However, I do not want to look too different from public schools on our transcripts. I'm trying to find that great middle ground. Right now, we will have to work hard to just get to pre-algebra in 9th grade. Bright boy, just not into math, or too academic. He's hard to describe, but he's a great young man and I know he will be a success at whatever he does, he just needs to wrap his brain around school being a bit more work than he wants. I spoke with Murray State and University of Ky this morning, and both require Alg, Alg 2, and Geo. Neither admissions person I spoke with acted like it was a big deal to do pre-algebra in 9th. So, I was feeling much better about things until I popped back on here and I see that someone mentioned they think college's are going to 4 credits now:confused:. So..., I'm not sure what I need to do. We are very close to a community college, so if we just go with the pre-alg, alg, alg 2, and geo...and they do change their standards, wouldn't they just require me to maybe do a summer class at the cc? Also, really, if these two say these are the requirements today, then could they really change their mind and it really impact me in 5 years? I'd think they'd have to give some leeway based on when you graduate. One local homeschooler has said that it really doesn't matter too much about the high school classes, her daughter never finished algebra 1 but her ACT scores were well enough for her to be accepted into the college she wanted. So, overall, unless it's a top named college, would it really matter if we were able to do well on the ACT, and pay to go to school there? Part of me thinks as long as I can pay them for classes, are they really going to care? I'm not trying to blow this stuff off, I'm really just trying to look ahead and avoid any curve balls thrown at us. If anyone can enlighten me, I would really appreciate it :tongue_smilie:. I will check out Teaching Textbooks. We are using Math U See, and I know the sequence is totally different. I do plan on going through the program at a steady rate, and working math on weekends. With this one, I have to do shorter, but frequent lessons. I'm even considering doing some morning work, then some nightime homework. He's definitely having some retention issues. Thank you all for the advice. Alison
  18. What other math program did you use after the pre-ag,alg, geo, and alg 2 sequence? Our state's pre-college curriculum states that prealgebra does not count for a credit. Since I obviously have a non-mathy kid, I'm trying to think of something that isn't very intense to take. Plus, he'd have to take it alongside one of the other programs. Any ideas? Alison
  19. I spoke with one college and they said it would be fine if I didn't do an earth/space year, but instead did chemistry. I think in KY it's listed as life, physical, and earth/space. Maybe they considered the chemistry a higher level than earth/space. For this child, short, frequent lessons are the only way to go. However, I can beef up the program. I just really like the looks of it and since I have the first half, I'm thinking I'd like to use it all for next year too.
  20. I am considering using Rainbow science's second year (bio. and earth science) for our freshmen year of science. My son will be taking pre-algebra this same year. I would probably do the bio, chem, physics for sophmore through senior years. I want him to be prepared for college, but at this point we are thinking he will not be entering a competitive school. I know there are mixed reviews on using Rainbow for 9th, however, I am comfortable using the program for high school and have some ideas on bringing in some supplementary materials. What I do not know, is how to label the class for a transcript. I saw where some were calling it physical, but this part of the book is more biology and earth. Would I, or could I, just call it a semester of Intro to biology, and a semester of earth science (or maybe earth/space if I bring in some astronomy resources). Or would I need something more mainstream or different? I want our transcripts to blend in a good way with other transcripts. In our state, the high school requirements are life, physical, and earth/space. I would love any advice on how to make this high school credit worthy, and what best to call the class. Also, if anyone has any other advice or suggestions for 9th grade, that would also be great. I was planning on holding off on the tougher science courses until my son started algebra in 10th grade. Thank you. Alison
  21. It helps me, but my son wasn't dissuaded. I officially have an 8th grader as of last night, lol. I was panicking, but I'm better today. My plans are to keep trudging through our MUS. we'll do a bit on some Sat. And Sunday's. Hopefully we'll be able to start pre-algebra in 9 th grade. I'll also keep focusing on spelling. We're using Sonlight's core G, so I'm not sure about history for next year. We're starting the first part of the Rainbow, so I'm not sure where to go next year either. One thing I've realized, school is easier when your kids are more mature ;). Alison
  22. My son went to preschool until it ended in May and he'd just turned 5. The teacher's there suggested he wait a year before started ps K. I talked my husband into homeschooling for that year, something I'd been wanting to do for awhile. We homeschooled starting at age 5 for K, but I always felt he was behind. He just didn't care that much about doing school and our lessons had to be kept short. He also took a really long time learning those first math facts. So, I wound up doing a 2 year 2nd grade. Around 8 to 9, math and reading skills took off a bit better. He's always been more about playing around than settling down to do book work :),the kid who drops his pencil numerous times, and who takes a long time to get his work done unless you are right there with him. The only reason I'd consider this is because he's really matured lately. He's not totally independent, but so far this year I've breathed a sigh of relief, because now I feel like I'm working with a young man (well, most of the time) and not some silly kid. I've never really cared about doing curriculum with grade labeling. For this year he's started using 6th grade Essentials in Writng (7th and 8th grades were not completed until yesterday, so I just decided to try 6), MUS fractions, AAS4 (moving steadily and will do 5 in a few months), Rainbow Science year 1, Visual Latin 1, and Sonlight 1st part of world history. I think all of these except for the math would work just fine for 7th or 8th grade. I know if I move him up a year, it would be more work for me :tongue_smilie:. I'd try to do science every day and get into year 2 of Rainbow if possible before next fall, or during the fall and then move right into bio. I'd probably do Sat. and summer math, and have him read all of the Sonlight history books, then read through MOH 2 and 3 if possible. I'm sure some things would wind up finishing next fall, in the 9th grade year. That really doesn't sound very appealing, because I know how hard I'd have to work;). However, his maturity and confidence in himself (or rather embarrassment when he tells someone he's in 7th grade) makes me want to try it. If I didn't have to sign up for the college program, then I'd basically call him an 8th grader at Christmas and work over during some summers to have him catch up. But with this program, it's sign up and do the work or lose the money. I thought maybe I could sign up the next year and then have him skip a year in high school, but I doubt they'll let me do that. I'm sorry this is so long winded, and I thank you for all of your suggestions. Over everything, I think my biggest concern is the math. If taking pre-algebra in 9th grade will not be a problem for colleges, then we'll be okay. I know with his maturity that we'll work and get through everything else. However, if it will look bad or mess us up on a timeline for ACT, then I think we are stuck staying where we are at. If anyone can shed more light on the math aspect, it would be very much appreciated. Thank you all for your suggestions and kind words!
