BJU Life science or Apologia General
Alison in KY replied to MrsMe's topic in Logic Stage & Middle Grade Challenges
I didn't like BJU life science at all. We used their distance learning when it was on sale, and after trying the first 10 chapters, I just had him start to watch the videos only. Btw, my books are for sale, if you go this route :). We didn't try Apologia at all, but it probably would have been better for us. From my viewpoint, if you had a kid that loved science and did well with textbooks, then BJU would be a good fit. I thought it was extremely challenging for my very average learner. He had never done a science textbook before, but had read lots of living books, done some online science, and a few workbooks before. -
Need help with HSing in Kentucky
Alison in KY replied to foxbridgeacademy's topic in General Education Discussion Board
I haven't, but I know several moms who have pulled kids out mid year and not had an issue. -
I've been wanting to buy an oil diffuser (and some essential oils) for years now, and I've never been able to make up my mind on what to buy. Any suggestions?

I found out that they only do 3 at a time for insurance coverage. They said insurance would cover more removed on another day, but not the same day. They want us to check with a general surgeon about having it done.m well see, but thanks for the comments, I feel better about it.

This doctor and the office is very gentle, I've had 2 done myself there. It will be cutting and stiches on each one, and the worst part is the needle stick because the numbing agent will sting. She is really mole-y (glad to hear that could be a good thing) but these 5 spots are irregular shaped and darker...and that's what they look for in moles changing to become cancerous. They do not have laughing gas, but we can get her a prescription for something to relax her (which I plan on doing). Going to the hospital and getting an IV really upsets her, so she wants to go this way with it. My husband wants to insist they do all 5 at once, simply to get it all over with and so that she won't have to go back through the shots again. He wants to do this so much that he's willing to switch doc's and go out of town. I'm more the do what the doctor thinks girl here. His point is that he doesn't want a traumatized daughter going back to the doc's office for round 2 of something that she would already know made her sore, etc. And again, this kid I my wimpiest. Other than a few shots, she's never even had her finger pricked.

My just turned 12 year old has 5 moles that need to be removed. This girl is not tough...she freaks out first then asks questions later kind of girl. She wants the dermatologist to take care of this at her office. The derm.'s policy is to only do 3 spots at a time. We are considering pushing to have all 5 spots removed at once. I know it will be rough on her, but I think it will be worse if we have to go back twice. Our other alternative is going to a hospital and she is totally against that one. Has anyone ever had multiple moles removed at once an regretted getting them all done? Alison

Advice on these books
Alison in KY replied to Alison in KY's topic in High School and Self-Education Board
Oh, and I was looking for general advice on how well these books have been liked. My son is reading quite a bit in another subject, so I was trying to stick with some interesting books and not cover the slower ones...yet have a variety. The info about White Fang and Call of the Wild was helpful, thank you. -
Advice on these books
Alison in KY replied to Alison in KY's topic in High School and Self-Education Board
Thank you. As far as what I'm looking for, I guess it'd basically be more along the lines of poor language and &ex that I'd avoid. Nothing as deep as you mentioned :). Okay, so it looks like you had no problem spacing your info....why is my enter button not working on here!! -
These are from Smarr's intro to lit. I know I've read a few of these, but many I don't remember. I'd like some advice on the books/list...as in, did you like the books, think they are boring, anything with questionable material for a young Christian man, etc. The Importance of Being Earnest, The Merchant of Venice, Call of the Wild, White Fang, The Prince and the Pauper, Silas Marner, The Scarlet pimpernel, Great Expectations, The Black Arrow. Sorry I had to run everything together, for some reason, my return isn't working here today. I know White Fang and Call of the Wild make me cringe a bit, I think because I once read them and they were a bit too sad for me.

If you've seen or used this program/DVD would you please share your thoughts. It's on sale right now and the sale ends tonight. Thank you. Alison

We are considering this for ds this fall. I was told I could just purchase the teacher's edition and that the front is the same as the student, and that the back contains the answers. I would love some feedback on how you liked this program, if it's true that you can get by with just the teacher edition, did you use the online lectures, and if you did the labs did you buy the equipment from any particular place? Thanks so much. Alison

Im going to an abeka book show/tell tomorrow and was wondering if anyone has any suggestions for high school programs. I'm thinking of electives like health, geo, or maybe even science. Any suggestions?

Does anyone have any favorite workshops they have used?

Thanks everyone, I'll check out conceptual physics and go ahead and look at biology. I'm trying to balance out our 9th grade year with some lighter courses and heavier courses. Math has always been a struggle for this one and due to several long road blocks, we will be starting MUS's pre-alg course around Sept. or Oct this fall. Hopefully everything will go smoothly with that. I just didn't want a science that was math heavy. I'd read that more modern biology texts tend to use quite a bit of math. Any suggestions for a biology course, earth science, physical science, or physics? Thank you. Alison

We really need some new towels. Decent ones that aren't all show, but actually help you dry off (some don't really seem to remove the wetness?). Any suggestions on brands or places to buy? Thanks, Alison

8th grade math after MUS Zeta....
Alison in KY replied to 3browneyedboys4me's topic in High School and Self-Education Board
We are going to stick with MUS until we graduate, or it stops working. If you hit a road block, I've found their advice and customer service to be wonderful. One time I was even given Steve Demme's cell number to call and get some advice. That alone makes me want to stick with the program through high school :). Alison -
Are there any favorite science programs that my son wouldn't need to already have algebra 1? We'll be taking Alg in 10th, so I am planning on doing biology that year. I was wondering about an earth science, physical science..or even if conceptual physics would be okay (not sure on math for that last one). Any suggestions? Thank you. Alison

Smarr Intro or LL 8?
Alison in KY replied to Alison in KY's topic in High School and Self-Education Board
How did you like LL 8? I didn't like the looks of Hewitt's high school lit either, but I was considering doing LL8...I'm also thinking of combining with EIW 9. Windows to the World looks good also, I just don't think my son would like all of the writing involved. Alison -
Which would you suggest for a somewhat lazy teen boy going into 9th grade who has never done a literature study? I'm leaning towards the Smarr Intro to literature course. I'm not sure if we would use the writing portion. Any votes? Alison
