  1. I'm considering having one of my kids do Famous Men of Rome at a Highlands Classical branch in our town. I also was going to use Sonlight core G. The FM class I'd consider a supplement. I was wondering how time intensive the class would be, and how your kids liked it? I'm trying to figure out if it will be too much for him. I will do the Sonlight program, I was just considering the class because it looks good, wouldn't take up too much time ( I think) and he likes the teacher. What says the Hive?
  2. Thanks. Have you ever used Sonlight's supply kit, or one by someone else?
  3. I plan on using Apologia physical science for 8th grade, but I'd like a bit of a schedule, and even a supplies kit. I was going with Sonlight, but a friend just told me that MFW sells their own schedule, but no supply kit..and theirs is much more reasonably priced. I was wondering if anyone on here could compare the two science programs, or even what you think of either one of these if you've used them...I know it's all the same science text, but I'd like input on reading schedules, maybe worksheets, tests, etc. Thanks all. Alison
  4. I understand, but I have to admit, I've met very few moms who want to learn Latin like you. I consider the class he is taking as just that, a class which is supposed to teach him. Like any other class, if he gets stuck, then I try to step in and help. I review the vocab cards with him, usually daily. I also run through the recitation. I have the answer book, so I know the answers. What disappoints me is how it is set up. I guess it sounds like I should really give First Form some consideration before going with another Latin class. I'll give MP a call next week, I've had very good conversations with them there about other subjects. And at least I'll feel better by letting them know where I think there are some issues in the program. Thanks for your advice. Alison
  5. I just wanted to share with you that I've been on these boards for years, and seeing what everyone was doing really would start to bother me if I let it. I'd always compare what everyone else was doing. I saw that you used the word (excel) and that's great if you can do it. I think it's easier to put on here all the great things you are doing if your kids are doing awesome and moving right along, or even if they have some great disability hurdle to conquer. However if they are just average...well, maybe it's me, but sometimes you don't want to get on here and really brag that your 13 year old just wrote his first paragraph:lol:. I try to take the turtle approach and just look for steady improvement in my kids. I have great kids, but they are definitely not advanced. They'd rather watch tv or play than do school any day. So listen to your intuition and if you think you aren't having "fun" enough, then take some time off for that. Hitting that propper middle ground for your kids having fun time, friend time, family time, and education time can be tricky. Sometimes I get it right, but more often I'm heavy in one area or another and neglecting everything else. I usually feel it when I'm off ;). I hope you have a wonderful year of school ahead for you. Alison
  6. Well, I actually don't like it as much as I wanted too either. However, if I were to take a serious grade, my son would probably fail. He takes the quizzes and online tests and usually scores from the 60's to the 80's. I've stopped worrying about it, and I'm now letting him have an open book. I just don't like the book material that well, but I'm happy with the video portion and I think he enjoys watching it. That's actually what I thought when I signed up for the special, was that for $99 I'd at least have some good quality science videos for him to watch...and that's exactly the way it's turned out. He does poorly on the questions and everything else. And we have not done the science experiments at home. Maybe we should, but I'm so busy with everything else we're doing, that science is lower in my priority list. Would she enjoy it if you just did the videos, or just did the book, or skipped the questions? I mean if you think she's learning the material? I'm thinking Apologia is more my sons (and my) style, but I'm still glad he's getting to watch the videos and experience the program. Maybe it'll make him enjoy apologia better next year. Alison
  7. Hmm. Well, I guess my expectations are just different. My son got the o, s, t endings but couldn't keep the other endings straight. I don't understand why they are counting on the kids doing notes...I guess I can tell that, because to me there is a hole in there. I am counting on the co-op doing the teaching, but when he comes home and is stuck, I'd think it'd be clear enough in the TM. Sometimes the info is right there, and sometimes it isn't...I mean he can recite like everything when I start it off...but just repeating those endings isn't making sure he knows what they mean to translate them. I guess I should be glad that our year is over :). I do not want to take/learn Latin. I expect him to get the teaching and me to be able to review and help him out if he gets stumped....by looking for an explanation in the TM, but the explanations are just not that apparent. Well, sometimes they are, sometimes not. Now I feel like it's just me having the issue . Is First Form workbook/TM designed just like LC1? Do they count on the kids taking notes again, and not have the English endings alongside the Latin endings...I'm getting frustrated just thinking about it. Alison
  8. How do you like their Latin? We are doing lc1 in a co-op setting and if he wasnt in class with an experienced teacher, I think I'd be very disappointed. I basically go over vocab cards with him and help him study for tests. Sometimes he gets stuck and I try to help him out. I do not like that it's not easy to find the def. of some of the endings...you can't always pick up the book and just find the answer..but sometimes it's there in Latin and English. I was helping him with it again studying for the last test and he had the Bo, bis and bam/bat endings all confused and didn't know the pronouns...and I had to dig around to find the answers when they could've been right there in the lesson...and they could've been in his book also. Will I be frustrated with First Form also? Is there a program that is set up better? Thank you, Alison
  9. I'm wanting to go to the Nash. Homeschool conv. this year, but I can't figure out where the closest hotels will be. Can anyone offer suggestions and give me any travel/ directions for getting there easiest?
  10. I bought hake 6, thinking it would be great for my d's, but now I don't think so. It gives you 10 or so practice probs, then 30 problems. It is good about reviewing, but there's just to many probs there, and the way it's set up, you can't really shorten the lesson unless you just do half one day and half the next. I thought my son could do it independently, but it just isn't working with him.
  11. I'm liking Meaningful Composition 4 the first semester. I also like Wordsmith Apprentice.
  12. Colleen, I was actually thinking about doing Core W over two years myself...so I could assure myself that it would get finished. It would also give me more time to take a few bunny trails. My main objective right now is to prepare my son for algebra in 9th grade (he's a bit behind where I'd like him to be), and to improve his writing. That's another reason I was considering just going with W, plus it'll save me some money from buying 2 cores. However, since I wasn't able to find out much about W, I have decided to go ahead and give G a try and see how it goes. Alison
  13. My general plans are to cover Cores G and H (all of world history) over the next 2 years. I was then thinking of going into MFW high school sequence, however, I've heard so may good things about Sonlight's 100 series, that I'd really like to make room for that. For those that are familiar with these programs, what order would you use these? Thank you. Alison
  14. How do you like Memoria Press's Latin for high school? I see Mp on the K-8 board, but rarely read about here. I was wondering if it wasn't well liked for some reason.
  15. You might check on the curriculum forums. I know the K-8 folks will highly recommend BJU science. My son is using the grade 7 distance learning science this year and it is extremely rigorous for him. I've started giving him open book tests in the hopes he'll pass a few more of them :tongue_smilie:. I was really surprised by the some of the comments on the other thread about BJU not being a very good academic school. All I've ever heard is how challenging their high school and middle school courses can be. I do believe, and may be wrong, that My Father's World chose to use a few of the BJU history texts for their high school courses.
  16. I would like to buy a knee brace and see if it'll help me out with arthritis, and something loose or torn in my knee (skipped the MRI because of the cost). Does anyone have a brand that they really like? I know Montel (don't laugh :)) advertises some Tommy Copper brand, or something like that. I'm considering giving it a try. Alison
  17. No, just wanting feedback on if others liked it or not. I know I could do the Apologia on it's own, but I thought the schedule would help us. I've not seen a Sonlight schedule in a number of years. I was hoping this was a good one. Alison
  18. Has anyone used Apologia's Physical science with Sonlight's schedule and supply kit? I am considering this for our 8th grade. I thought I might get some been there and done that responses on here. Alison
  19. Can someone share what the pc requirements are for using this please. Alison
