  1. I have a niece going to Merced. She likes it fine, is on a pre-med track (dermatology is her goal). But in her case proximity to home may have been a significant factor.
  2. My dd got a scholarship for her portfolio -- $5500/year, and they gave it to her for her extra semester, too. We had 3 kids @ home when she went to school, so she got a CalGrant, too. They host the National Portfolio Day in San Diego. I don't know about merit scholarship other than by portfolio evaluation -- dd had a B average and an low-average SAT, but that didn't seem to be a big consideration. She loved the school -- it backs up to a conservancy and they had their science classes there, town is very artsy with galleries and plein air paintings, etc.
  3. Both Cal Polys (SLO and Pomona) are tough to get into, focus a lot on engineering stuff but definitely offer other majors. We have a friend who taught @ Pomona in Industrial Sciences. My oldest attended Laguna College of Art and Design (So Cal, near beach), a fairly affordable, small non-profit art school (400 students). Loved the price, good quality preparation but not much choice of teachers in a particular area. We also toured Otis (near LAX), more expensive and much more urban, and Pasadena (gold standard of art schools) which was not worth twice the price, KWIM? For your artsy student

  8. DD is a Pioneer in AHG, but not for much longer. She had her Board of Review this week. 8-) She's been the only jr hi/high school girl in our troop this year but has finished 3 badges as well as helping weekly in the Tenderhearts and leading a Class B meeting -- showed them how to use water color and re-create a Monet painting). She'll end this year with 2 service stars (30 hr) plus having completed her Harriet Tubman service project, which was another 15-20 hours of service.
  9. AHG Court of Honor completed!! Such a busy year (our troop put on first-ever regional Camporee for 8 other troops). Our roster of leaders for next year is ALMOST in place, and I actually have all my dd's badges sewn on her sash already. She earned SIX badges this year as a Pioneer!!! Very proud of her.

  11. Our troop is hosting Camporee next weekend for 9 AHG troops and I am the registrar (oh joy). Still finishing up booklets for each level of girls. Still shopping for our skit boxes. (Since we're working on the Space Exploration badge, each level is going to act out some of the things they're supposed to learn about, plus the Pi/Pa girls will be putting together skits based on constellation stories.) I am still waiting for final payments from several troops, and making schedule changes. I will be so glad when this is successfully completed. Only 2 badge meetings after that, plus some boards
  12. The poster can be very simple, but it's supposed to hang for two full weeks before BoR. We were able to hang ours @ charter school; some kids do it @ church. PenPal - they're supposed to exchange 5 letters....over a year, counting from when they got their girl's name, so it's a bit off-synch with the regular program. Congrats to you and your girls!
  13. We went thru and picked our TH @ home badges by choosing those that met the most prerequisites for Explorer level (dd started in 3rd gr.). Did the same thing choosing @ home EX badges....those that met the most Pi/Pa prerequisites. And now she's a Pioneer......looking at what to do for Harriet Tubman. Congrats on the upcoming Sacagawea!

  18. Going to the convention sounds like fun. It's awfully far and expensive for us, though. Just have to keep up on email/online. Love to see your updates here, though, so please post highlights of the convention if you can.
  19. Our troop has never done swaps....maybe because this is the first year we've really shared an event (spring Camporee) with another troop. Not that many troops in our area. My dd just moved up to Pioneer and wow, those badges are a lot tougher to attain! She's working on My Style @ home this summer. And I'm putting her through final set of swimming classes, plus jr. lifeguard training, so that will go toward the Swimming badge. That's MORE than enough! I hear there are new badges coming out this summer?????
  20. We had Camporee last weekend for four AHG troops - the largest one yet in NorCal. The troop that planned it did a GREAT job with organization & scheduling for the larger group. But I so do not want it to be our turn to plan next year's event, for which we already have two *more* troops interested in participating!!! Also, my troop's Explorers ended up repeating the very badge we'd been working on all year. sigh. They still had a great time. I will be glad when this troop year is over as everyone on our board has been doing multiple jobs and we are feeling very stretched. Next year ther
  21. We have a friend with a son like this. He got a business degree and has a full-time job with BSA, including both marketing (which he interprets as game-playing) and managing a summer camp.
  22. My oldest is talented in art, but her SAT score was mediocre. She got a scholarship, but not on her academics. And the whole time she's been in school she's been lucky to keep a B average. Her second semester she failed *D* a class...and changed her major to avoid having to take it again. She's loved her art college years, but she's looking for a job to pay the bills now she's finished and having a hard time finding anything, despite her 4 years of part-time experience. My ds went to community college at 16 because he wouldn't work for me anymore and I was tired of fighting with him, not b
  23. Speaking of weather issues, it's supposed to be 93 deg F tomorrow and I am taking my Explorers (4th-6th grade girls) on a 3-4 mile hike. Water, water, water, hats, sunscreen, water.... At least our leader is an experienced hiker....he led a Venture crew for a number of years. I am asking dh to come along so I'll have someone to whine to, but given that I've been having digestive issues ALL SUMMER that kept me glued to the bathroom, I am a bit anxious about this hike. The new medication is helping with the digestive problems, but I am way out of shape. I did do a flat mile around the neighb
  24. We had a nice family camp this weekend. As we were both feeling less than wonderful, dd and I just went for the day, which involved a nice little hike and a docent-led tour of a local grist mill. We learned a LOT about how flour was milled in the mid-1800s and how the crop mix has changed (oh, boy, has it) since that time in our area. The boys were tying knots like crazy and making scarf rings with drills & saws & pocket knives. And a very good time was had by all.
