  1. Regardless of how bad the school system is... the previous legal decision to render her help should have traveled in the permanent file from the previous school. Was it tutoring or actual intervention? If it was legal intervention and a school official deemed it necessary (i.e. 504 Plan or IEP/IEE) it needs to be followed up in the new state as the federal law dictates. Do not expect the teacher to get her help either. It sounds like the parents have no clue what their rights are legally?
  2.:lol::lol: I just posted this on my FB and the first 2 folks to like it were ironically the same folks who drive me batty with being attention seekers as in the cartoon. LOL
  3. Last week, our ds took the "pre-ACT" (PLAN) at a very elite private school. We requested extended time on the test and showed them his recent Neuropsych test that requested it. We had to pay for a proctor with an additional fee. After the test, we were dismayed to find out the proctor was texting on her phone during ds' test. He complained her phone was "chirping" all of the time. He even asked her, "I thought no cell phones were allowed?" To which the proctor retorted, "That rule applies to you. Not me." And she munched loudly on pretzels and slurped a drink during his exam. He was the only one in the room for extended time testing. Everyone else was in the lunchroom. :glare:
  4. It is a lot of plug and chug -- make sure they have completed Algebra I.
  5. You made a decision. Stick to it. Any indecision will only add to the mess. FWIW, you do need to try to have her get to know other classmates down the road once this situation has long passed.
  6. :iagree: Reminded me of the scuttlebutt in the teacher's room at lunchtime. ;) BTDT. Another reason I quit after 14 years as a public schoolteacher to homeschool in 2004. Not much has changed.
  7. Correct. I should say he never went to an Opium Den to USE opium -- didn't he look down on that in the books? I do not recall alcohol being an issue. But Watson detested Holmes' smoking, if memory serves me right.
  8. Holmes took Opium, but never went to an actual Opium Den in the books. He was addicted to Cocaine and in the later novels, Dr. Watson had him sober and clean from this addiction. The author, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, had a father who was alcoholic. Some suggest the father was a cocaine addict as well.
  9. Ds (age 17) and I watch this weekly. I love the PBS Sherlock, but for a regular TV series... this is a nice intro to the world of Sherlock for novices. SPOILER: I like how last week's episode finally clued us all in to the Detective (Aidan Quinn) knew all along that Sherlock was a recovering addict. I have to explain to Ds that this series touches on the classic Sherlock and twists it. I love the fact on PBS, Dr. Watson is a former Medic with a past. And I do like that Lucy Liu was cast as Jane Watson.
  10. Same thing applies to a high school reunion. You go with the spouse to support him or be the trophy wife. ;) But also have fun if you can. Get a drink and mingle. At one event, where I knew no one... I had a blast talking with one gal (she was in the same boat as I was with not knowing anyone and we both were former public schoolteachers) over many glasses of wine. It was a great time! Try to go!
  11. Curious as to why the niece does not qualify in her NEW school for remedial help -- but (if I read this correctly) she qualified for help at the old school? Her permanent file (from the old school and given to the new school) should prove the documentation for an ARD/SST/IEP/504 Plan meeting at the least.
  12. On FB during political season... I just hide them from my news feed. :D
  13. Sorry that happened to you, Joanne. If it helps, many YMCA before/after school workers feel like they are not a part of the staff on a public school campus. It is seen like this from the top down too... sharing the letter to a non-certificated staff member (YMCA). I worked at public schools and the before/after school staff were treated like this often.
  14. Kids like that often "peak" once out of high school and the rest of their life they are bemoaning the ol' Glory Days when they were King or Queen. Meanwhile... those who did not peak or were bullied on finally blossom and find their niche/partner/career in life and do quite well. I cannot tell you how many from my High School who were Queen Bees are now miserable. That girl will also be emotionally immature if she keeps acting like that in life. OP, let your dd read this and have hope that Murphy's Law (Karma) will bite back at those people. Hang in there! :grouphug:
  15. Why not do a twin bed with a trundle (extra twin bed) underneath it? It rolls out from under the first bed and pops up. Push it next to the twin for a queen size if needed.
  16. :iagree: You will need to self-promote at local fairs or shows too. Spread the word about your Etsy store. Put the address on flyers, postcards or hang tags. You will be competing with other Etsy sellers too. Promotion is key.
  17. Most colleges require all students under the age of 21 to live on campus. I'd be inclined to think (based on documentation) that the office of disabilities on campus can help you get approval with the service dog need while living on campus.
  18. :iagree: That makes no sense. I'm sorry to hear this happened to your son, Heather.
  19. A letter wriitten with a law firm's letterhead would also get attention. Legally, she has the right to an IEP or 504 Plan for this under the law (OTI = Other Health Issue) for accomodation in this area. I sense staff training is in the future?
