  1. I can't remember who made it but I do remember when we were living in GA that Homeschool Hangout had a history program. They are in Alpharetta and you are close by there. Also our bookstore (and I am sure other independents) in Cumming had an amazing section on Georgia history and lit from Georgia authors. Now I need to figure out Minnesota History. We need to quit moving. Melissa
  2. I know exactly what you mean. I was talking about this to another mom the other day. Then I told how they said on the morning news show once that learning a language was great for older people because it exercises a part of the brain we don't really stretch. Granted they were talking about retirees but I am hoping that some of this latin learning will help me feel like I am doing something.
  3. I am actually fixing dinner for a family of five tonight. I am making porcupine meatballs (basically meatballs mixed with rice baked in tomato soup), salad in a bag, rolls and brownies. I had to planned to roast a chicken but it didn't thaw in time. On Tuesday, I am fixing dinner for a friend whose daughter is having her tonsils and adenoids out. Since her dd won't be eating I am fixing spicy Korean food for them. Her dh loves spicy food. Usually I try to fix something a bit different but with appeal for it's audience. After a total of 7 mos bedrest during my last two pregnancies I had a lot of meals brought to our family. Some weeks it seemed like a lot of repeats as in three lasagnas but with leftovers the next day it was six lasagnas. Some of the favorites in our family have been chicken enchiladas, grocery store rotisserie chicken, chicken fried steak and a roast. Chicken tenders were a big hit with the kids as was pizza. For sides I usually try to include a starch, a veggie and dessert. Most of the time the veggie is a salad bag from the store. I don't have time to do it all. I also usually make a pan of brownies. I always use tin pans from the store so that mom doesn't have to do dishes. Oh and I always check for allergies and dislikes before we get started. HTH
  4. I forgot, a favorite snack around here is hummus. I like to use hummus because I have to maintain my blood sugar with protein. We like to dip toasted pitas, carrots and celery in it.
  5. I am defrosting a turkey right now and I am going to use part of it shredded up with bbq sauce for something we can throw on baked potatoes. It will also go in soups, pot pies, pasta dishes and on sandwiches. I will just portion it out and freeze it once it is cooked. I hope you get some great ideas.
  6. I hadn't thought of trying to keyboard until we got some writing down but he has progressed to print if he has to like when we spell the RR words but copywork is painful. It would definitely lengthen the day if we were to write a sentence. We are making progress though since the beginning of the year his handwriting has made a marked improvement. All narration has to be oral and I write it down for him and then he draws a picture.
  7. You are so cool. I picked up some of the gooey lip gloss with the wand a few months ago. Very fun.
  8. Yes the equations befuddle him do to developmental vision issues. As to the writing he can write but it is hard for him as he has dysgraphic tendencies. We are making progress but are still on one word copying. We started with the RR just after getting our diagnosis and the eye dr has given me a bunch of things to work on his automaticity. As to making RR longer I think I need to be more willing to keep going. He is but I plan a day and just need to either plan more or be willing to just move it. Math yes I do need to just pick one and run with it. I hadn't thought of miquon. I will look at that tonight. Science we will head outside as soon as my southern bones dare venture out. We made to twenty today but there isn't a whole lot going on out there. Tomorrow we will see if the squirrels come out to make tracks in the fresh snow. Today we were talking about hibernation. He thought it was funny that he could compare me to a bear. I love the building idea. He loves using his zoobs, kevas and has asked for legos for his birthday that is coming soon. That could be part of his day. Thanks for that suggestion.
  9. We practiced with the older to by swallowing nerds (the candy) whole and moved up to tic tacs. It helped them figure it out without the nasty taste. I think I personally I learned by swallowing my peas whole at supper so I wouldn't have to deal with the pea mush inside!
  10. I would say yes. I think given the facts presented it would be a fun and safe activity. And yes I do have a wild youth but like stated when I was not well behaved it was with could who had less than stellar parent appeal! And it was definitely done on the QT not with my parents having an itinerary in hand.
  11. Bookcases (a lot), shelves, a bed, and a futon now. Have had a couple of futon chairs in the past. We love Ikea. All of mine has held up very well. Some of it has made a couple of big moves and several small moves. I am very happy with it.
  12. I am roasting a chicken for a friend tomorrow. I will probably fix potatoes and a salad with brownies for dessert.
  13. I was looking the other day for ds who is 7 since he wanted to know. The Culinary Institute of America says they need six months experience in a commercial kitchen before attending. But for specifics you can request an info pack from the school.
  14. They are different although I am not knowledgeable enough to know how. I am ordering mine through horriblebooks.com He has them in stock and he is here in the US so they will get to me faster! Melissa
  15. Well when I was younger it irritated the tar out of me that I was always grounded after report cards when it seemed like nobody else was who had similar grades. I hated hear that I wasn't living to my potential. But you know what my parents were actually right about it. It would have been unfair to others to force them to try to meet a goal that was unrealistic. At the same time I really needed to start putting some effort into the process. So although I know that the other two will be upset I think your one should be let off the hook if he is performing his best. Everyone's best is different. You will probably need to meet with each of them individually and explain a bit of your rationale. They will still hate it. As my children can quote me as saying "life isn't fair. Life's rough get a helmet." We have a lot of unfairitis since we have 3 kids ages 7- 18. Someone always has it better.
  16. When I washed ds's phone (he should have taken it out of his pocket before it went in the laundry!) they told me to take it apart, air dry it and hope for the best. He need a new phone. Sorry that happened.
  17. Sounds like a UTI to me too. Go to the doctor. It is quick and simple. Do drink lots of water. But definitely before you get to miserable. Trust me I do know about the waiting until your miserable thing! Hope you feel better soon.
  18. Somewhere on the site I did find a schedule. It is on the left and it says AG 2 yr and 3 yr timeline. HTH
  19. It is on my itunes list waiting for me to dl. I love it. A friend just showed it to me two days ago. So cool!
  20. I am not getting it to come up either. I couldn't find it on the schedule for that day.
  21. I will be getting my SR cd soon. I am wondering how I am suppose to do it with RR. Also what can I do to expand DS's day. Right now we are doing RR which seems to take two seconds unless we keep going and I am not sure how far to push us. We are also doing a bit of handwriting outside of RR. We do SOTW 2 Cd's and a color sheet or sometimes a craft. Occasionally we do an experiment ( not being good about this at the moment). Anyway our day feels short. Way too short for an eight year old. He even commented on it, today. I feel guilty that I still haven't picked a math for him. I especially feel guilty since last night when he was grilling with his dad I asked how much longer and his dad goes it has only been on three minutes and ds says with out missing a beat that there is 15 minutes left. We have never learned the facts and I have been very reluctant to move him forward since if I have written and equation he becomes all befuddle. I guess that is part of the automaticity and a dyslexia. What am I going to do? Maybe I just needed to vent but I could really use some suggestions.
  22. We are switching out of latin primer I into Latin prep in the next couple of weeks or when ever it arrives. (I figure a week to arrive and a week for me to read it and implement it). Primer was just way too dry for us and I finally realized we needed something to pull us through or we were never going to get anywhere. We looked at sample pages of latin prep and dd really liked them. So did I. I think the sample pages are on galorepark.co.uk I wish we hadn't wasted so much time trying to make it fit just because I had bought it. But I guess at least I can say that I have learned from my mistake. New latin here we come!
  23. I haven't had it in my hot little hands yet ( I can't order until Friday) but I have heard some good things about Galore Park books and it is what we will be getting. We got stuck in Latin Primer because it was too boring for words. Dd liked the Latin Prep as it is more colorful and the narration made her laugh. You can check them out at http://www.Galorpark.co.uk I am ordering through horriblebooks.com
  24. I was going to suggest calling the nurse at your ped's office. She can tell you what is going around, how long it last and when to be concerned.
