History/Geography- SL Core F with his siblings, using Trail Guide to world History notebooking pages Science - SL Science E with siblings Art - unsure, thinking of using Geography Through Art that goes with Trail Guide
  2. My son had speech therapy at age 4 and 5. He still had problems with his "r" sounds when he was released from therapy. The school speech therapists said that if he still had problems with the "r" sounds in 3rd grade then he would be eligible for services again. He is 8 now and doesn't have any problems with his speech.
  3. I have had a few jokingly type request to homeschool their children, and everytime I tell them that is illegal in our state.
  4. I liked using Winston Grammar with my kids and will use again in a year or two with my younger son. We used the basic book last year with the supplemetal book also. We have the Winston Works book but haven't started it yet. The Winston Grammar basic and supplemental book have 30 lessons with 10-14 sentences, pretest/post test and 4 quizzes. We did 4 sentences every day to due a lesson a week. The supplemental book is not necessary for all kids, my daughter didn't need the extra pratice but my son needed all the extra sentences he could.
  5. I definetely think the cleanliness of store varies greatly. Years ago, I went to Aldi's in a nearby town, since we didn't have one then, and it was dark, dirty and gross. Two years ago our town had an Aldi's store open and it is clean and I shop there regularly. I live in a small town that has 1 Walmart and two home town stores and now an Aldi's. Aldi's has definitely helped my food bill. The produce is usually very nice looking at our local Aldi's. I have found a few things that I will not buy from Aldi's : mayo, mac-n-cheese, soup. I save $5.00 alone just on the coffee!
  6. I used an alarm clock to wake my son up during the night. This trained him to wake up through the night and use the restroom. He is 8 1/2 now and wakes during the night to potty. He occasionaly has an accident if he is extrmely tired and doesn't wake up during the night.
  7. Hang in there! I had my twins 12 years ago and it was a hard pregnancy, but it is only a faint memory now. I wouldn't want to trade it for the world. I was on bed rest for 3 months.
  8. I have two 6th grade students, that overall like school. They have always liked school. Their favorite part of our day for them is reading our Sonlight books.
  9. We use them as just another worksheet.
  10. I have a couple cores new from Sonlight and a couple used. I would say you can find Cores used, but if the Core is not complete I think you can end up spending quite a bit to peice together. I have found a few complete Cores on ebay for a good price. I did peice one together and spent close to the amount I would of new, and had used books. I did save some, but did not feel like it was worth my time.
  11. My daugther got the answer with a fraction. We are just starting decimals this week.
  12. So, out of curosity I had my 6th grade student do this question just now. It took her 2 minutes and got it correct. I don't think 4 minutes is unreasonable, as my son would have taken longer to do the problem than my daughter. (they are twins).
  13. I would check with your doctor. I agree that it is possiblely asthma? My son is 11 and recently complained several times of chest pain. I did discuss with our doctor. I explained to him that I listened to his chest when this was happening and heard no wheezing.(I am a nurse). The doctor feels like it is asthma related. He only complains of chest pain and no difficulty breathing.
  14. I have 11 y/o boy/girl twins. They are doing the same curriculum. I work with them together on most subjects, but indiviually if needed. They are generally on the same level on everything, but sometimes need to work a little harder on one suject than the other. They do not have as much competition as my two boys do who are 3 1/2 years apart.
  15. I live in the Ozarks and we have controlled burns every year. When the controlled burns every year there is thick clouds of smoke seen for miles and miles.
  16. We were 105 yesterday. After a little cool front, at only 96 so far today. Then supposed to bounce back to triple digits tomorrow and for the next 7 days. Yikes, it is not even July yet.
  17. Where is the best place to order supplies for using with Artistic pursuits?
  18. I have narrowed my selection down to Cheerful cursive or Pentime Cursive. Can someone give me there opinions on these different writing programs. I did not like HWOT this year and I did not like the looks of A Reason for Handwriting. I have three children I will be have learning to write cursive.
  19. This is hilarious!! Fortunately for us, we live in a rural area, and have only had a couple of solicitors in 10 years.
  20. It is taught in the lessons in Beta, but is in the back of the book in Appendix as optional lessons in Alpha. We are have way through Beta and haven't done time yet in this book. I did go over the appendix lessons on time with my son.
  21. If it were me and I could afford it , I would get the newest one in their catalog now. My son is on the 36th week of the 2011 Core B, and from the sample IG I would have liked to have done the 2012 version more. I think I will like the lay out of IG and maps better. I already use the LA and Bible from Sonlight so I have no objections to the new IG. Some people don't use Sonlight LA or bible and do not like having to pay for the LA and Bible if they buy a complete Core as it is now included.
  22. I think an 8y/o would be ok with Core D ,but not so much for any younger. My twins started Core D when they were 10 and they have loved it. My younger 7y/o listens in frequently and enjoys some of the books, but he will get sooo much more out of it in 2 years when he does it. He is finishing up Core B and I even think he would have gleaned more from it this next year. I think it can be done with younger children, but the older they are the more they will benefit from the books.
  23. My children are using MUS this year. I pulled them out of PS last year and back tracted a little from where they were in PS, and started them in Gamma. We did review for most of this year and they understand math soooo much better now. I do think one math program is not going to work for everyone. My twins were in 4th last year in PS and there were parts of Gamma, Delta and now Epislon that were not covered completely in school. I think what Mr. Demme of MUS says is correct, in PS waht they are taught is a mile wide and only an inch deep (or something like that.) I personally like the mastery approach. My children had a hard time mixing so many concepts and not fully knowing how to do any of them well. I do think if you change programs your child might have gaps because the programs are so different. I plan on using MUS all the way through High school at this point. As for testing, my children just took a standarized test this week so I don't how they will score yet.
  24. I have been looking at several things, but wanted to wait and order to get a few new IG's. I had looked a new catalog and seen the prices for packages (science, handwriting) had only went up a dollar or two so I decided to wait to get those items with my order of new IG's. Well I went to order this morning and low and behold, the items I wanted had gone up. If I ordered the package it had not changed much, but the individual items went up several dollars. So even with my 10% discount, I will be better off ordering somewhere else for all my items except my IG's. I really wanted to support SL, but at the moment I do not need or can afford to buy a whole package.
  25. We use MUS and really like it. My twins were in ps last year and I brought them home this year. They have really begun to understand math not just do the problems. I am a mathy person myself, but was not able to explain math well to my children (who are not math minded). I did just recently picked up LOF to supplement MUS.
