  1. We do a version of this. I flipped it so the one we use is vertical, but don't have a link for it: https://docs.google.com/file/d/0B70Ofn4LNZ37LUlqUHA0YUZTbEE/edit ETA: Vertical (better for 3 ring binders): https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B70Ofn4LNZ37M3F4V3hlcjBqODA/edit?usp=sharing
  2. Just play and read. She doesn't need to be more advanced. If you want her to love math (as my mathy daughter does) you need to give her space. Look up living math books, maybe through some games, but mostly just let her discover it on her own, at her own pace. Preschool only if she seems interested.
  3. It's there. I do remember I had to search a couple of different ways to find it. https://www.rainbowresource.com/wldetail.php?&id=010221 https://www.rainbowresource.com/wldetail.php?&id=010228 I think the "and" vs. "&" messes up their search engine.
  4. We tested at 5.11 She had already started to try to "blend in", AND was uncooperative. We probably didn't get accurate numbers, but we did have great tester. The experience profoundly affected the way we homeschool for the better. I think she'll take the Explore this next year, then decide if there's any merit in having her tested again. I doubt we will, though.
  5. I think it varies from school to school, but in most cases, if you begin high school in PreCalc or Calc, the prerequisites will be assumed. I already have Dolciani PreA and Algebra, as well as Foerster Algebra. I like Dolciani a lot better as a supplement than as a stand alone. I think I'll make dd pick; Dolciani and EM or Singapore DM and Alcumus.
  6. Would Singapore DM be overkill with EM? (Trying not to think about cost here la la la la). Dd originally chose DM for PreA and I ordered the textbook last week. It arrived today, and I like it.
  7. Dd thinks the samples are fun, fun, fun. Would it be mostly complete as a math program for homeschool? Those of you who have the books they are based on, do you know what traditional class we would need after what is finished? Do we need to do separate geometry? Besides factoring, what else would we need a little extra drill for? Thanks!
  8. Following with interest. Dd just place into "likely to succeed" and wants to know why I've been keeping this a secret from her? Of course I ordered DM for her just yesterday. Eta- what happens if/ when we finish the available courses? Even after reading this thread, I'm a little unclear what we would be signing on for if we went this route. What class would we need next?
  9. Have you done any Dragon Box? Your dd might like it for some pre-pre algebra. My dd has done all three (most of a and b sides for the algebra ones), and it really has fueled an interest in learning higher math. (well that, and the murderous math books) Dd likes the Beast books, she's actually done quite a bit of what's in them through other problem solving books. We've been working through Alcumus a few minutes a day last school year, and she's about 1/2 way through the prealgebra problems. She's some of Dolciani PreA and MEP 7- she likes set theory. We sort of unschooled math until she was 7, and she's done Singapore in the last year or so. I think she's ready to move on. I tutored a student in PreA almost daily this last school year, and she sat across the table doing her own work, but sponged quite a bit of it. She has just "gotten" showing her work in the last few months. We haven't done CWP (she prefers the puzzle-y problems), so I think I probably will need to take my time with the workbooks for DM. I have the HIGS from Singapore 5 Standards. We haven't done all of the enrichment problems in those, so I might do those, Russian Math 6 or IP 6 along-side DM 7a, and follow a semester behind with the workbook. Thanks!
  10. I've thought about it. We tried it 2 years ago and she didn't especially like it, but she didn't like anything at that time. Have the format changes they announced happened yet? Thanks!
  11. My dd has played some of the games through BrainPop and liked them. I looked at it when it was still in Beta test a couple of years ago, and liked it then, but I haven't found anyone whose used it from the paid side.
  12. I have Russian Math 6 that I was considering instead of the IP 6. Would it be similar/ equivalent preparation? Thanks!
  13. It's a group buy at HSBC: https://www.homeschoolbuyersco-op.org/JASON-Learning/?c=1 Pros? Cons? Worth $80? Thanks!
  14. We used it last year for everything. Dd didn't love it, but she did it without complaint, and she has vastly improved in all areas. We did probably 2/3 of the assignments in the workbook. I do think the text book is expensive, but I didn't pay as much for it. I'm not sure why the price has gone up.
  15. Also, I don't know anything about this series, but it's Singapore for students who "need extra support". RR has it, but the description is better here: http://www.singaporemath.com/Math_Works_Coursebook_5A_p/mwc5a.htm HTH
  16. I tutor with Math Mammoth Blue books. No grade levels :o). I do like CLE's development books, but if you need repetition, Key To books would work better. If you'all are butting heads a tutor or TT might be a better path for your sanity. Good Luck!
  17. I think will plan on just 7a this year to give us time to dig deep if needed. That way we can do problem solving and contest prep books, too.
  18. We did it for a 7-8 year old last year who had never done formal spelling. It worked well. We're also doing Lively Latin (which includes some English grammar), CAP Writing and Rhetoric and lots of writing across curriculum. Worked well for us.
  19. She does want to stay with Singapore. I'm not sure where/ how to "exit" Singapore. By age, she could finish DM series by high school... and I don't think there is enough support material for me to teach her through DM4/ Additional Maths. I guess I could hire a tutor.
  20. Derek Owens is sort of my second choice- mostly because I think we'd have lots of time for "extras", which is what she likes. I'm not sure I want to be tied to the videos because she's done some PreA already. Is it easy to accelerate?
  21. If you've had elementary dc move through multiple levels of Singapore Primary Math in a year, what happened next? How much did they slow down going into PreA/ DM7? DD is starting DM7 this fall, and I'm debating pacing and if I should only order 7a for this year. If you have used Discovering Maths with a young student, how much of the text did you cover? Did you use the workbook- would it be overkill with daily Alcumus? She's never liked the CWP books, but did like the IP's. We also do MOEMS books weekly. ETA: She's done through PreA Chapter 4 in Alcumus and the first three chapters of Dolciani this year, so I guess the question mostly applies to Singapore Discovering Maths textbook and workbook. Thanks!
  22. My mathy dd didn't hate Beast- she liked the guides. She actually likes the workbooks, but we've never really done it as a curriculum. She never wanted to, even though I offered. She likes Alcumus, but not the PreA book either. I only bought the first two. Lechner's book and Zaccaros books are better suited to us. She also discovered Murderous Maths. I wake her up in the morning and find her asleep with them. She followed me around for 2 days with the codes book. HTH
  23. I just looked at the age of your ds. At 8 I was concerned about the same thing. She was very strong in math, but there were definitely holes. I decided we would test into Singapore and just work through it for an hour a day, four days per week. Even though she knew most of the material, I absolutely know it was the right decision for us. The fifth day I went ahead and let her start PreAlgebra and worked on in-depth problem solving. All 5 days a week we spent about 10 minutes on Alcumus or AoPS videos. She is much more confident, and it has given her time to mature into more problem solving. Good luck on whatever path you choose.
  24. I think it's interesting that Stanford Online High School offers only 2 Middle School science courses, and they are both appear to be inquiry-based: https://ohs.stanford.edu/divisions/science.html HTH
  25. We did this last year with Galore Park Science 3. She did learn from it, but it was light compared to her self-directed reading. It really has improved her ability to handle a textbook, look for information and answer questions. We haven't done much math in science, yet.
