  1. The Causas were very good - we had one with crab. We also had the empanada sampler and I thought the beef was the best of those. I think they are known for the cebiche and causas. I think I would focus on those if I were going back, which I am, in October!
  2. So here's what I did: Dinner at La Mar Cebicheria - so amazingly delicious. The Cebiche with yellowtail was to die for. Got a tattoo at Soul Patch on Haight. This was not planned, but it turned out great! Wandered around the Haight and Golden Gate Park. Went to Satin Moon - bought some lovely fabric. Shopped at Nordstrom's preseason sale. Lots of dinner and cocktail events with Bud, schmoozing it up. Last morning on the wharf, clam chowder in a sourdough bowl. Thanks for all your tips. Satin Moon was a hit. If you are looking into a tattoo, I recommend Ben at Soul Patch.
  3. We all go to the same Family Practitioner. I went to an OB for pregnancies. None of us has any medical issues, so I imagine if we had something very complicated our doc would refer us, but we're pretty easy patients.
  4. Same here. I'm putting Satin Moon on my list! Thank you all for the recs. I think I'm going to have fun no matter what I do - time alone is rare, and it is 100+ here in TX. Can't wait for a couple of days on my own in 60 degree weather!
  5. I get an ad for single men, 30-39. I have tried to figure out what internet habits I have that make me look like a cougar, but I have yet to come up with anything. Also, I signed up for the GRE for August, and I keep getting ads for the GRE now. Ummmm, I already signed up. What's the point of that?
  6. I've been to SF quite a few times and have done all the touristy stuff. I'll be there next week, and I'll have Tuesday and Wednesday during the day by myself while Bud works. The evenings will be filled with business events with Bud. Any suggestions on some fun, solo, not-too-touristy things to do?
  7. Khan Academy You can start her on Khan Academy's website. She can go through the practice sets of problems until she starts having trouble, then start watching the videos before the problem sets. It's free, and very well done, and it will quickly get her level figured out so she can really spend time there. It's pretty fun, too.
  8. 18 years and counting here. Bud and I are pretty happily married and there is very little I would change about our marriage. That said, on any given day he could make me feel anything from pulling out my hair to gaga in love. When you share space, I think there is always a little driving eachother crazy going on, no matter how in love you are. :001_smile:
  9. Late to this thread but wanted to join in. Things we did right - no spanking, no yelling, very clear boundaries wrt what we will put up with, expectation of kindness and respect between all family members. Things we were/are bad at - schedules and bedtimes. Romy is about as sweet as they come (I doubted our methods there for a while, but she came around), but being the 3rd, much younger sibling, she has no semblance of a schedule. I plan to fix that this summer. I'm sure there are other things, but those are the ones that stand out to me.
  10. We have a great deal here. Luke plays bass and gets a private lesson once a week during school (he misses half of an orchestra class for it). It is 22 minutes and we pay $17. Masters degree, experienced teacher. During the summer the same teacher charges $25 for a 30 minute lesson and we travel to his home studio. All private, no group classes.
  11. My parents had 7 children between them. My siblings and I have 14 biological children (there are also 3 stepchildren that are not blood relations of my parents so I'm not counting them, even though there has never been a distinction in our family - it's just that they would still be here even if my parents never were). The grandchildren have 10 children so far. 31!
  12. In Texas, at least, once you attach it to the property it is considered part of the real property and no longer personal property. Legally those plants now belong to the landlord. Improvements to real property by tenants generally become part of the property and remain at the end of a lease. Now, whether the landlord will pursue reimbursement from your security deposit is another question. But, at least in Texas, it would be his right. It would never cross my mind to dig up plants and take them with me.
  13. This was always a required stop for our visitors when we lived in DC.
  14. Imagine you have no faith in a deity, yet you see people doing all kinds of despicable things in the name of religion. Camping causing people to cash it all in for the rapture. Muslim terrorists bombing things. Palestine. Homosexuals being denied the same rights as other couples consisting of two consenting adults. (And we haven't even opened a history book yet.) These things don't truly represent the hearts of many of the followers of various religions, but like it or not they are a big part of the face of religion in the world today. I can see why someone who was confident that there was no deity would want to convince a Christian that they are wrong. If you don't believe in an afterlife you really want this one to be good, and we religious folk have a tendency to mess this one up.
  15. Luke was 75 the year he was born, now it's 41. Peyton was 168 the year she was born, now it's 51. Romy hasn't ever been in the top 1000.
  16. I'm a Texan. Both sides of my family were in Texas within a year of it becoming a state. Prior to that, both side were in the colonies/states from very close to the first settlers - everyone seemed to have been here by the early 1700's. Before that - Scotland, mainly, and some from England. Bud's ancestors all immigrated through Ellis Island around 1900, either from Ireland or Italy. It gets difficult to go further back for him since any records are in Europe. The question I have is how far back to go? My best friend's parents both immigrated from Columbia to the U.S., but she was born here. She can trace both sides of her family back to Spain because of military records. Is she Columbian? Spanish? Hispanic? Caucasian? White? What about her children? It gets very confusing.
  17. We buy used, but with as low mileage as possible. Mine was purchased at 23,000 miles, and currently has over 100K. I hope to make it to 200K. I hate spending money on a car. Makes me crazy.
  18. Here is what I would probably do: Move science or history to a summer only program and spend a little more time on it during the summer. Keep the other one to study during the year. Dump Mindbenders and keep going with Latin. The Latin study will help her understand logic. Dump typing and have her take it in school at some point. Is Saxon math really adding to what she'll be getting in a GT math program? I'm doubtful on this, but you'd have to look at what they do. I think I might let that one go, and use something fun (Life of Fred comes to mind) during the summer to supplement what they are doing in school. I'd definitely keep going with grammar of some sort through middle school, because they don't really seem to teach it at all. Good luck! I hope that the program works well for her!
  19. Thank you for the laughs, Nance! Here's one in the name of being inclusive: The Pope is hanging out at the Vatican when the phone rings, so he answers it and says, "Hello?" "Hello, Pope, this is God," boomed a voice from the other end of the line. "To what do I owe the honor of this phone call, Lord?" asked the Pope. "Well, I have some good news and some bad news. Which would you like to hear first?" "I suppose the good news," answered the Pope. "My child, I've decided that I am tired of all the division in my church, so I have decided to make a single, world-wide denomination for all of my followers." "That is fantastic news, Lord! I think this is a wonderful and wise decision! But, what is the bad news?" "I'm calling from Salt Lake City."
  20. Another snake escape! I love how the man called out for his mama!
  21. Aubrey, I haven't read the other replies because people on this board are really prolific! But, have you thought of online teaching. There was a NYT article SWB posted on FB today about it. It wasn't really positive about the quality of a lot of it, but the demand is big and will presumably get bigger with the layoffs (300 plus announced in Spring Branch yesterday) that are sure to continue. Now the schools will need it and the parents will want more outside help with the schools having fewer resources. Just a thought. :grouphug::grouphug: My only question about law school. Does DH want to go to law school or to be a lawyer? Because I would really love to go to law school. Lawyering - not so much. I think there are some of us out there who could just go to school forever. Something to consider. More :grouphug::grouphug: Amy
  22. Lady Aggies, 2011 NCAA women's basketball champs!
