  1. I was planning on trying to use SL with my dc this fall. It will be my first time hsing all 3. Hs oldest ds in first and used MFW. We enjoyed it and he became an excellent reader. I may use it again for my youngest . But we are Catholic and don't feel that MFW is a good fit for us in the older grades. In the fall I will have a 6th, 3rd, and K. I liked the idea of SL but was having a hard time finding a core my 2 oldest could do together. Also money is an issue since I'm buying EVERYTHING from scratch. The new changes to SL have sent me looking elsewhere. I found RC history today and I am interested. Its more affordable, most books are cheaper on Amazon as well. I was thinking of doing the economic plan then filling in from the library.Does that sound doable? We would obviously start with ancients. My 6 grader is begging to do something besides American history and my 3 grader hasn't had formal history yet so its a good place to start. My K'er loves to listen to stories so he should be happy tagging along :D Any opinions or suggestions are greatly appreciated.
  2. You sound like a good tipper to me! My dh is funny about making sure he tips enough and your method sounds like his.
  3. Ok a few days ago I was asking the hive for advice on what size laptop to get. Thanks to the vast knowledge of the hive I now know that a laptop is not my only option (we only have wireless internet. Had no clue that desktops were now wireless as well) So.....now another choice lol. I am trying to decide between a laptop and an all in one desktop with touch screen. I used to have a touch screen at work and it was so cool! Anyway back on the subject. We currently have only a tablet and two smartphones. That is it for comouters for us. We have no way to print! We will be starting hs in the fall and most definitely will be using the computer daily for that. DC are 10,8,4. If we go with the desktop the dining/school room will need to be rearranged. Desk is currently in the master bedroom, piano in dining room. They will have to switch. Not a huge deal, we have a single story home. The plus to the desktop is, bigger and can be used by more then one child at a time easier. Theplus to the laptop is obviously its portable, although with the resent discussion of preteen boys and computers I'm not sure that's such a good thing. I'm pretty sure it wouldn't leave the house, just go from room to room. They are also slightly cheaper.Downside to the laptop is my ds4 he has broke 2 (both grandmothers) in the past year. Both do admit they were not supervising him at the time :glare:. Still he is anything but gentle lol. I have tax return $ burning a hole in my pocket so please help! Thank you :001_smile:
  4. Oh dear! So the desktop picks up the hotspot signal? Can you tell it's been years since I've shopped for a computer? That would be awesome but now I really don't know what to do! If we had a desktop our school /dining room will have to be re arranged so the desk will fit in there. But we aren't starting hs till the fall so no rush. We would lose the portability but it would be sturdier (my kids have broke 2 laptops). We could also get more computer for our $.I feel another poll coming on lol
  5. We won't be moving it except from maybe the dining room to the living room:D. Desktop isn't an option because we live in the middle of no where and our only internet is verizon wireless. We used to have their usb modem for the desktop but the modem died. We decided to go with the jetpack this time so up to 5 wireless devices can use it at a time. Mainly the tablet and xbox at the moment. Desktops aren't wireless so that leaves us with laptops to pick from. It stinks being in the country sometimes lol
  6. We are in desperate need of a computer here in our home. The desktop bit the dust and now all we have are a tablet and our smartphones. We would like to get a laptop this time. What size does the hive recommend? It will be used for school. We are in a home with ds10, dd8, and ds4 if that matters:tongue_smilie:
  7.:party:It's moving further south! At least I can claim to be a neighbor to a cool state:D
  8. Sounds like a corneal abrasion. You need to get to the dr asap for antibiotics. It might seem minor but you could get an infection and lose your entire eye. Please see an eye dr first thing in the morning.
  9. I'm a newbie at this, how do you change the title? Or do you just make a new thread? Thanks :)
  10. Thanks you for the advices ladies :). Does anyone have any more suggestions for what reading program to try with my K5? How about "language arts" for the older two? Thank you again.
  11. My dhs grandfather used to do this till the wrong (or right?) person found out and he was charged with a felony for cruelty to a domesticated animal. You can do that to wild animals and even farm animals as euthanasia but cats are domesticated. Thats a felony.
  12. I have posted a few times asking for advice on hsing my 3 dc. Dc are currently in Catholic school but we are going to start hsing in the fall. By the fall they will be ds11–6th grade, dd8–3rd grade and the ds5–K5. We are leaning towards SL cores B&G. Ds11 loves history but has studied American history the past 3 years and is begging to do world history. Dd8 hasn't really done organized history so I felt it was best to start her at the beginning. Also they will both be generally studying the same period. I was hoping to do one core or history together but it doesn't look possible. We will be doing a science core together. That leaves language arts and math. I have no clue where to start it's completely overwhelming. Is SL language arts any good? As far as math goes as lovely as it looks I don't think something like Singapore would be good to start this late in the game. I also haven't figured out what to do with ds5 I can't afford another core so I was thinking about just doing the basics with him then letting him tag along. Any suggestions for the basics? Lol I am open to any and all suggestions so anything you got please throw my way :bigear: Thank You!
  13. First I would call and clarify that they actually did do the tests. I've gotten all kinds of crazy messages from drs offices. Most don't even have nurses anymore just techs that may not even understand what they are readin If they did do the tests I would demand to talk to the dr and billing and tell them you told them NO std testing and will not pay for something you refused, expecially since you have no risk factors. My midwife always asks if I know or have any reason to think my husband or I have been exposed to anyone else since my last visit. My answer is always no so no std tests are ever done. When they did them with my first pregnancy (refused with other 2. Thought it was a waste of money) I had to sign a consent form. That may vary by state. So yes I think you have a right to be mad. I know I would be.
  14. I have chronic kidney infections and often times issues with my urine are the LAST symptom. It usually starts by me feeling yuck, then back pain, then fever, then vomiting. Usually I'm in the ER by the fever. Go get checked out asap.
  15. I filled ours and my parents last week Feb 2 using Turbo tax. Both were accepted within a few hours. "Where's my refund?" still has no info. I've decided to blame it on the new system and not worry:glare:
  16. :grouphug: I was in your shoes last fall. My baby of 14 years had cancer. My biggest regret was waiting so long to do it.One day she looked at me and I realized she needed me to help her. She had been there for us her whole life, it was time for us to be there for her. I took her to PETA, a lot of people say bad things about them but they were WONDERFUL. I cried the entire time but the last thing she saw and heard was my face and my voice telling her how much I loved her. It was almost as hard to bring her home and letting my other 14 year old dog seeing her. They have been together since they were puppies and if I hadn't let her partner see she was gone she would have died looking for her:( I also recommend digging the hole ahead of time. My dh dug it the night before and it was a huge relief to not have to worry about it when we got home. I am saying prayers for you, your family and your baby....
  17. I noticed last fall that dd7 had started getting grown up body odor and was rather muscular for a girl (or any 7 year old) she's has a defined six pack! Then one night she called me as she was getting out of the bath and told me she had hair down there. Told her it was fuzz and she demanded I look and sure enough she did! I almost freaked! Ds10 doesn't have anything like this yet. I called the pediatrician and made an appointment. The Dr. (female thank God) looked her over and said yes the hair was the real deal BUT it wasn't puberty yet. She said the hair, odor and muscle definition are all caused by increased androgens but puberty doesn't officially start till you have androgens, estrogens and progesterone. Both boys and girls need all to develop. Estrogen is usually first with both genders and that causes breast development which dd7 does not have. Ds10 has more nipple development then her at the moment because he truly is in the beginning stages of puberty. Dr told dd not to worry she might have more hair and be slightly smelly but she will be stronger and faster then most girls her age for a while which she loves because she plays sports. Then she talked about hygiene and deodorant :tongue_smilie:. Does your son have any other signs of puberty? Like bo, underarm hair, other development "down there" or nipple development? ( yep boys have breast development too in the begining, ) If you are concerned make an appointment with your pediatrician. It sure helped this Mommas mind rest lol
  18. Doesn't sound like a classic kidney stone. That being said stones hurt the worst when moving, and tend to be really sore when they are stationary. Did your dr culture your urine to make sure you have the right med? I've been a nurse for 10 years and battled kidney stones and infections for 15. It's my understanding that Macrodantin doesn't treat kidney infections only bladder infections. It only works on the urine and doesn't get absorbed in your blood enough to treat the kidneys. Kidneys are very vascular and need something stronger to treat them. You need to go to urgent care or the ER. After 5 days on Macrodantin you should be completely better. In other words if it was going to work it would have by now. Hope you feel better soon. I know how miserable you are :grouphug:
  19. As a hospice nurse I've never asked people those questions but they have brought it up themselves. I find the list to be consistent with what I've heard. The age of the patient changes their regrets. A terminal 40 year old is going to have more or different regrets then an 80 year old. I find the older the patient the less they talk about what might have been or what didn happen. The older patients tend to enjoy talking about what was. It is all part of the normal stages of dying. I think certain people and certain situations spend more time in one stage then others. It's beautiful and heartbreaking at the same time. It definitely changes my outlook on things.
  20. Glad you are going to the dr. I understand not wanting to go to the er. Please though if you start running a fever, vomiting or having chills pleased go to the hospital asap. Honestly if it is a true kidney infection you will need IV antibiotics, at least one big dose before oral meds. Oral meds don't work fast enough but IV meds start working in a few hours.
  21. I'm a nurse and my professional opinion is go to the er like NOW! I've seen countless people usually women die from an untreated kidney infection. On a personal note I have chronic utis. Before I got extremely good at noticing the symptoms I had a pinkish tone to my urine at breakfast. By that night I was in ICU. You do not mess with your kidneys.
  22. My first thought was thyroid. I have hyperthyroid and they found out because I lost 15 lbs in two months while eating more then my husband. How are you sleeping? Any change in personality at all? (irritability, depression, anxiety)
