Trying to decide on Vocabulary/Spelling for 8th....HELP!
mom31257 replied to hmsch4me's topic in K-8 Curriculum Board
I am going to start Roots and Fruits Vocabulary program this year.It is by Jill Dixon and is actually K-12. It is one book with 673 English forms of Greek and Latin Roots and Prefixes with their meaning and 1716 vocabulary words (many of which are on the SAT). It includes vocabulary words for World/US History, Sciences, Foreign Languages, Math, Geometry, Classical Reading, Literature, and Bible. You can also add to the vocabulary words by having the student find some of the same root on their own. The author suggests 3-4 roots per week if just starting the program in 8th or above. I'll be having my ds do 1 a week and my dd 2 a week. There is a weekly schedule of lesson plans (15 minutes a day) with suggested review activities and games. Capitals...lower case...or both at the same time.
mom31257 replied to praisefor3's topic in K-8 Curriculum Board
I taught my dc capitals first. They've had no problem learning the small and both were reading some by 4. I taught them their upper case at 2-3, then lower case 3-4. My dd wrote her name for the longest time in all capitals, but by Kindergarten made the switch. My ds is starting K this coming school year, and I will have him make the transition to writing his name the proper way. Amy of GA Darin's wife for 17 years 11yo dd 5yo ds -
What science programs did you use with a 5th grader?
mom31257 replied to praisefor3's topic in K-8 Curriculum Board
We used SOS this year. Someone actually gave it to us for free, so I figured if she did something on the computer it would give me some one-on-one time with our son in Pre-K. She actually loved her science this year and usually wanted it to be one of her first subjects. I added it to it a little with things from the library that fit into the units. It had a few experiments, but I think that must vary from year to year with them. Some years must have more than we did. We will do it again this year (the same person is giving me 6th). I will probably switch to Apologia by high school because I've taught Apologia Biology and Chemistry and like them. SOS doesn't offer anything higher than Physics. Would you mind to tell me about these or tell me how to look them up? I would love to know about both. I really need to increase the amount of memory work we are doing, and both ideas spark my interest. Amy of GA Darin's wife for 17 years 11yo dd 5yo ds

I just wanted to say that Angela can lift her leg this morning and the new pain is less! She is still having the pain that was the purpose of the procedure, but we're at least glad that there won't be any harm from having it done. Amy of GA Darin's wife for 17 years 11yo dd 5yo ds

Thank you all for your prayers. Please continue to lift her up. The procedure went horrible today. They went in through her groin to do the nerve block. She now has a new pain on the inside of her thigh and she can't lift her leg very far at all off the ground. The doctor says these should go away, but she is afraid they won't. They have put her on a pain patch that is used for cancer patients. The doctor is telling her that if this block doesn't work and the narcotics don't work, there is nothing else they can do. She's all ready had surgery to correct this ruled out. Amy of GA Darin's wife for 17 years 11yo dd 5yo ds

Favorite Fiction for Ancient Rome?
mom31257 replied to Heather in Neverland's topic in K-8 Curriculum Board
I'm so glad you asked! We're doing ancient history next year. I'll be taking a look at these, too. Amy of GA Darin's wife for 17 years 11yo dd 5yo ds -
That is a super list! I want to keep it for my ds to learn next year (some we will probably do this year). Thanks for sharing! Amy of GA Darin's wife for 17 years 11yo dd 5yo ds

Please pray for my sister, Angela. She has a nerve block scheduled for this Thursday and next Thursday. The nerve is microscopic and she'll have to be awake enough to answer questions. Her leg hurts so bad that she can't even wear pants because they touch it too much, so I can't imagine the pain she'll be in for the procedure. I'm going to be with her during it and stay a few days after. She had laser gall bladder surgery 4 years ago, and we don't know what happened, but after she started having severe leg pain in her right leg. It has been a nightmare. Her central nervous system picked up the signal and is sending it randomly to other parts of her body. She can't work because of the pain and she can't sleep. She now has fibromyalga (unsure of the spelling) because of such lack of sleep. It even hurts her for the water from the shower to hit her skin. She has been denied disability, which they could really use. She was asst vice president of a mortgage company, and we can't see how they would think she could go back to making decisions with hundreds of thousands of dollars in her condition. She has no children, but her husband is almost to retirement age and can't even think about it because of her needing insurance, etc. Please remember her if you can. 5th Grade Grammar..what do you use?
mom31257 replied to Heather in OK's topic in K-8 Curriculum Board
We used BJU for it and probably will through high school. I loved the way it was arranged. There were 16 chapters (8 on grammar, 8 different style writing projects). Every other one was writing. Once you get to 7th, there is writing at the end of just about every chapter. I haven't looked at high school, only through 8th. Amy of GA Darin's wife for 17 years 11yo dd 5yo ds -
Poll: Do you support capital punishment?
mom31257 replied to Colleen's topic in General Education Discussion Board
I decided that if I'm going to be Pro-Life, then I am going to be pro-life all the way. If it's wrong to kill a baby in the womb, then it's wrong to kill a person who's out. I am a Christian, but I would be pro-life even if I wasn't. I do believe people should receive life without parole when it is merited. I also am not sure that helps the victim's family heal. I see it as possibly leaving them with a feeling that revenge has been served, instead of forgiveness that, I believe, in the long run will serve them much better. I was wondering if you could make this. I thought of buying 2 identical bookcases and have someone just make the top, or put a large piece of countertop on it. If you did that, you could control the size of the space between, even making room for 4 or more. Amy of GA Darin's wife for 17 years 11yo dd 5yo ds

Anyone use Abeka for grammar? Opinions?
mom31257 replied to CactusPair's topic in K-8 Curriculum Board
We used A Beka Grammar for 3rd and 4th grade. We have switched to BJU and LOVE it! The writing component of A Beka is definitely weak. I also felt that they were a little behind on when they introduced topics. We did 5th BJU and I have 6th BJU for this coming year. BJU doesn't have a separate grammar from their phonics until 2nd grade. 5th and 6th both have 16 chapters, alternating a writing chapter with the grammar giving you 8 different writing projects during the year. If you check it out and want to purchase, Christian Liberty Press sells only 2nd -6th grade of it. They have permission to print a teacher manual that is basically an answer key with a little bit of help on the writing chapters. It's much cheaper to buy through them. I saw Indiana Jones with my dh. We will not be taking the kids to see it because of the language. I was really disappointed because of the end result of the "treasure hunt" (I don't want to give anything away). I thought the originals were much better. Wow! We are all electric, and those seem like big amounts. We have our electric and water/sewer on the same bill each month. Our electric in the winter is probably $130-140 in the coldest months(Jan-Feb), but it will be $80-90 in months like Nov and March. We do live near Atlanta, but we have cold natured kids. Our house is about 1850 sq. feet. My bill for May was only $127 and that was water, sewer, and electric. Amy of GA Darin's wife for 17 years 11yo dd 5yo ds

Wow! Thanks for the help. What a great list! I also have a Sonlight catalog and didn't even think to use it for a list. I'm not very familiar with them. The people on this board are so helpful! Amy of GA Darin's wife for 17 years 11yo dd 5yo ds

Thank you so much for pointing that out. I just recently purchased it at a used book sale, and hadn't noticed that yet. Thanks for the other ideas as well! Amy of GA Darin's wife for 17 years 11yo dd 5yo ds

Is there an ancient history/MOH lapbook available?
mom31257 replied to Free Indeed's topic in K-8 Curriculum Board

Formal Reading Curriculum?? Opinions please.
mom31257 replied to FloridaMomTo5's topic in K-8 Curriculum Board
We LOVE BJU's reading program. It's expensive new, but we try to find the non-consumable used. They include everything concerning comprehension such as the various types of discussions questions (found in the TE), comprehension activities in the student workbook, vocabulary, literary lessons (foreshadowing, personification, etc.). They have novels with comprehension and activity guides called Book Links. You should definitely check out the program! Amy of GA Darin's wife for 17 years 11yo dd 5yo ds -
I am doing MOH, volume 1 this coming year with my dc, 6th and K. Does anyone know of a good suggested reading list for this time period (Creation to the Resurrection)? I want to add to the program for my dd. She reads well above grade level; however, I don't want material that is too mature. Thanks so much! Amy of GA Darin's wife for 17 years 11yo dd 5yo ds

I taught the 7th grade A Beka Science one year at a co-op. It was very thorough and very detailed. I felt like it was a lot of memorizing, and not much critical thinking. I remember one test covered 200 pages of material, which I think is a lot for 7th grade. I have only taught Apologia Biology and Chemistry at the same co-op, and they definitely had more critical thinking. My dd used SOS this year and will next. It's sort of the same in memorizing, but someone gave them to us for free and she actually like science better than last year (we did unit studies). I want to check out BJU. We'll be making the switch to Apologia or BJU by 8th grade at the latest. Amy of GA Darin's wife for 17 years 11yo dd 5yo ds

If you were going to switch to textbooks....
mom31257 replied to LoveBaby's topic in K-8 Curriculum Board
I have used a lot of textbooks over the past 3 years of homeschooling. I've never tried R&S, though. I'm new to learning about classical education and have done traditional almost completely. My favorite company has been Bob Jones, although I'm using a few others. They are expensive to buy new, but you can find a lot of stuff used. I especially like their Book Links, which are novels including comprehension and activites guides for across the subjects. I will definitely be using BJU for reading/english/math for my dd 6th grade. I'm not using them for reading for my ds (K) because he is all ready reading while it teaches to read more slowly at first that I think he needs. I'm doing Horizon's Phonics K, but he'll be in BJU no later than 2nd grade for reading/english. He's doing BJU 1st grade math this coming year. He's a Math lover, so pretty far ahead. My dd did Alpha Omega's SOS(only starts in 3rd grade) this year for science. She really liked it much better than last year, when I just did unit studies with her. I'm going to use it through middle school, but I want her in text books after that (probably BJU or Apologia). I don't want her on the computer too much. We're doing MOH for history together and Roots and Fruits for vocabulary Amy of GA Darin's wife for 17 years 11yo dd 5yo ds
