  1. I mentioned in a thread a week or so ago that my ds had just finished up several evaluation sessions with a neuropsych. We met with them today for the results and they told us he was on the Autism spectrum - so ASD, mild but ASD none the less. They want us to apply to the school board to "hold him back" a year so he can get 20/week of intensive therapy that is only available to pre-schoolers. They know we homeschool but if he is considered school aged, he doesn't qualify for treatment. So now we have to petition the schoolbaord to allow us to hold him back a year (he will be 5 in August - so close to the cut off here). Apparently our board is quite strict about this and may deny our request. The neuropsych will also send a letter requesting this for us. I was really, really surprised by this diagnosis. I know that sounds naive but I really didn't think that would be the result. I worry about him so much and I wonder how in the world I am going to get him 20 hours of therapy a week and effectively be able to homeschool his two brothers - I am just scared. Ugh! Just wanted to share...
  2. Love: Miquon, Math Mammoth. Dislike: Teaching Textbooks Yes, you could use the dark blue Math Mammoth series for extra help.
  3. 3B does cover things like 30x9 in the final multiplication chapter. I remember feeling like it should have been taught before the area and perimeter questions as well :)
  4. Thanks. I will check that out. We started the process for getting him evaluated because he was nearing typical school age and still seemed so young socially and emotionally (plus his fine motor delay and lack of being toilet trained also contributes to this). We plan to homeschool him anyway (like his older brothers) but I still wanted to get him evaluated to see if there are suggestions we can implement to help him make further progress. I really can't imagine him starting Kindergarten in the fall in a B&M school - I am so thankful to be able to homeschool him. So we will just wait until next Tuesday until we meet with the evaluators again. I find the waiting so hard...
  5. Ex- review one day, tile work the next, writing/diction to complete the lesson. This is how we do it. We move through AAS relatively slowly. I usually do level 1 and 2 in one year and then a level a year after that.
  6. For my ds 7 who will be a 2nd grader next fall I plan to use: -WW1 -FLL 1 -not sure if he will like this but I am going to give it a try. if it goes terribly, I will likely skip grammar altogether :crying: -ASS 2 9we dropped AAR after level 1 and moved to AAS instead. I agree - doing both would be too hard. Once they are reading well, I like to move to AAS instead of AAR -ETC - books 4 and 6 -HWOT - 2 This ds is very day dreamy so I am a little concerned about how next eyar will go. I delayed starting WWE and FLL this year in 1st because he didn't seem ready. Instead we focused on finishing up his phonics (OPGTR - 10 lessons left = YAHOO!!) and reading, reading, reading.
  7. We just completed four consecutive weeks of Neuropsych eval for my ds 4 (almost 5). We go back next week for the results meeting. Can folks who have been through this tell me what to expect? I am nervous because they didn't give us any indication from week to week how it was going. The first week they met with us (my husband and I) for over an hour but the rest of the sessions have just been with my ds. We have several concerns we highlighted for them prior to them meeting with my ds. Our main concerns are: -he has a severe fine motor delay and a mild gross motor delay. He is extremely clumsy and has global low tone. -he has a major speech delay (apraxia) but has come really far through therapy and is almost at the level of his peers. -he isn't making any progress with toilet training. -he still tantrums regularily and often for unpredictable reasons. -he has some sensory issues (loud noises still really startle him). -doesn't really have friends outside of our home. -he struggles to answer abstact questions like "how's and why's" On the other side, he is very social, very affectionate, has great eye contact, shares (most days!), enjoys games, takes turns, seeks us out to show us things, has pretty good imaginative play with his brothers etc. I keep telling myself he doesn't have all of the typical autism signs so i don't think that will be the result - but I really struggle to figure out what they will tell me next week? Any thoughts? Just to help me pass the time until I meet with them again :confused1:
  8. Thank-you. i really wasn't sure if I needed both either.
  9. I have finally given this some serious thought so here are my oldest ds's 4th grade plans: Math: MM4 and finishing up Miquon Writing: WWE 3, WWW3 Spelling: AAS 4 Grammar: FLL 3 and Evan Moor Language Fundamentals Handwriting: HWOT 4 (cursive) Typing Island Reading: Reading Lists French: SKOLDO 1 Music: continue weekly guitar lessons History: SOTW 2 (finish) and begin 3 Geography: Evan Moor daily geo Science: Evan Moor daily science plus RSO bio P.E.: karate, basketball, swimming I think that is it :crying:
  10. I second Math Mammoth. When I started hsing my three, I started with TT and quickly disliked it. We switched all my boys to MM and Miquon and they love it again. We do one or two MM sheets per day and 1 Miquon sheet a day. It is a wonderful combo. MM is very mastery.
  11. I know it is intended for Gr. 3-5. but I am looking for others that have used it to give me their opinion on what the writing expectations are at the beginning of this and how quickly it progresses. I know I will be using this program, but just not sure what timeframe would be optimal for a reluctant writer.
  12. I am looking for something for my ds 9 with ADHD too (for writing) so will be watching for any other suggestions. I was thinking IEW but am not sure either...
  13. My oldest ds will be in gr. 4 next year (9 years old). He is a very reluctant writer in every way. We have been using WWE and WWW (a grade behind - so just finishing up WWE2 and WWW2) so far with him. I would like to try IEW SWI-A with him either next year or the year after (or the year after that). If we didn't try it next year we would stay the course with what we are using and do WWE3 and WWW3. For those of you with reluctant writers that have tried SWI-A, can you tell me when you think I should give this a try with my ds? I would really like to see him writing more but don't want to overwhelm him and him decide he "hates" the new writing curriculum. Thanks for your thoughts!
  14. How do you think the Junior Science will make out in the buy-out?
  15. I would like to buy a copy of these textbooks and answer books but when I look for them I see there are many similar titles and several editions. Can you tell me what editions of each are preferable - or will any do? There is one called Pre-algebra and Intro Algebra - how is that different from just Pre-algebra or just Algebra 1? The BCM I was looking at is the edition with the boardwalk on it. Would this copy be o.k.? What do the covers look like on Pre-Algebra and Algebra? I am having trouble figuring out what is what when I go searching. Thanks for any clarity you can provide.
  16. just wanted to say I dread the day we finsh up Miquon too :(
  17. I posted this question on the K-8 board deep in another thread but thought this might be a better place for it. We are using MM now and all is going well. I am not strong in Math but work ahead with my boys and so far I feel comfortable. I am starting to look ahead to Pre-Algebra, Algebra, Geo and Calculus and have seen many names bounced around. I was wondering if those with some experience with these could tell me about them? Specifically, things like whether they are strickly textbooks, or CD /DVD teaching included, what courses they cover and if you would consider them good for average, remedial or advanced students? -Lial's -Jacob's -Dolciani -Forester -ALEKS -Derek Owens -Tabletclass -Tobey and Slater -AoPS -TT Thanks for any help you can provide

  19. Anything by Jim Arnosky. Such beautiful books !!!
  20. I also hadn't heard of WT before this thread. My ds 9 (just turned 9) has done WWE 1 and 2 plus WWW 2. I have WWW3 and WWE3 but was thinking of IEW next year but was uncomfortable with the price. WT may be a nice compromise.
  21. I can't decide on writing. We have done WWE 1 and 2 and WWW 2. Next year I think I would like to do WWE 3 and IEW but I hate to spend that amount of money if it doesn't work for us - ugh!!!. At least I am happy with Math. We all love MM and will stick with it for the long haul :)
