  1. Good question. I don't know what to put down for word count. Maybe count the words he has written in his novel from last year? This sounds so cute! Mine is writing a book called "Humpback of Notre Dame" with a humpback whale that gets beached on land. He has a friend named "perry" who is a pufferfish and a shark (I forget what kind of shark) is the evil character.
  2. Thanks. I understand they did it for adults but wasn't sure if they did it for kids, too. Great to hear it.
  3. I didn't know this until I searched online but there is actually plenty of places that kids and publish their works. There is one that actually pays kids as authors and illustrators. This is so cool! Here are some links: http://www.kidpub.com/ http://www.fivestarpublications.com/kidscanpublish/ http://www.stonesoup.com/stone-soup-contributor-guideline/
  4. Hi, Has anybody's dc do NaNoWriMo Young Writers Program and then publish a book for fun. My ds (10 yrs old) wants to write a novel and have it published. He likes the worksheets on this site and has a book in his head he wants to write for in November. What did you do?
  5. Hi, Has anybody used the book "String, Straight-edge, & Shadow" book and made lesson plans to gowith this book?
  6. Thanks! I was looking at the older set Life Science - Evolution for Grades 6 and up. But it sounds like the younger one is ok, I will check it out. Ds knows all about evolution and the big bang, etc. all that stuff. He just loves to read. I just don't know if I believe we came from apes. I am a geologist (who believes in God) and know all about Darwinism and still I don't think I believe we come from apes. Even what is supposed to be whale in prehistoric times and then jumps to dolphins? I just don't know what to believe. Anyway, that's WHOLE other thread............... I will check out the book again. Thanks!
  7. ok, so after I sent this original question out, I was also searching online and one of the links I got was this one: http://www.fossils-facts-and-finds.com/ Check out this links inside. It has wonderful ideas and timelines: http://www.fossils-facts-and-finds.com/clock_of_eras.html Lesson ideas: http://www.fossils-facts-and-finds.com/earth_science_lesson_plans.html Holly -- I checked out your books and I really like the FOSSIL book but it has too much of "he said/she said" on evolution vs creationist. I really like it though except for that. Swellmomma -- I am trying to Intellego paleontology but all I could find is Life Science - Evolution. Is that what you are using? Do you have a link of it? Also, while Googling "Intellego Paleontology" I actually found some threads for WTM, which when I do a search here, I get nothing. http://forums.welltrainedmind.com/topic/397827-if-you-were-going-to-do-a-dinosaur-unit-study-with-a-13-and-11yo-what-would-you/ Please keep the suggestions coming. They are helpful in getting ideas turning in my head on how I want to proceed. I hope it also helps others.
  8. Thanks. Sorry I disappeared.....my rabbit got very sick and we spent 2 weeks trying to get him well and then he died on Sunday... Ok, I am trying to figure out how to do it as a short 3 months unit. I will check out the links. Somewhere there is a old earth timeline on the website that I wanted to use for this unit. We live on the East Coast.
  9. Hi, I am looking for ideas to do a paleontology unit. I am not sure how to go about this and I wondered if anybody tried this before in the middle grades.
  10. Oh, you guys all describe my child to a T  I am always looking at VSL threads, hoping to gleem as much as I can with information. This year I want to try LOF Fractions (we already started fractions w/MUS & MM last year), LOF D&P as a SPINE and adding MM Blue TOPICAL Series for practice. I want to add in the Spring HOE and maybe Jousting Armadillos for PreAlgebra OR AOPS Pre-Algebra with vidoes on the site OR Penrose the Cat series. I hear Jousting Armodillos is less intense than AOPS. http://forums.welltrainedmind.com/topic/466107-has-anyone-used-jousting-armadillos-or-other-prealgebra-resources-from-arbor-center-for-teaching/?hl=%2Bjousting&do=findComment&comment=5039856 I also have LOF Pre-algebra and Algebra w/Biology to use for the future. There is also Real World Algebra for practice. DS LOVES LOF and wants to keep going even though it's sloooowly getting more difficult for him to use it. It is actually helping him the frustration level of math that everyone talks about with AOPS so maybe its helping him get to AOPS. I also anticipate my ds doing something like engineering or some other sciences, so I am very careful about teaching him about math. He is also a very good writer and author, so maybe he will write Sc-Fi books. Who knows!
  11. Yeah, I have this problem, too. So I am listening in :bigear:
  12. RunningMom80 - I have been using ENKi education from Pre-school thru 3rd Grade, with a child I did not know was an accelerated learner. Enki is a waldorf WITHOUT the anthro phylosophy stuff (whatever that is). Anyway, I just wanted to give you some food for thought. The MOST important of these curriculum is not so much skill area, because as you can see that varies. It's the stories that feed the child's development at the time. So, a 5-6-7 year old, who is grounded in the family, is ready to leave it's family and go on a quest, meet some chaos and quickly come home to "all is well". They are still in the imaginery world, make believe world. So, hearing fairy tales and playing out the stories is how the child plays out his unconscious heart desires. It keeps them grounded. So, you can always work with skill, but I think you should look at the stories from Grade 2 and then sit quietly away from everything and imagine reading these stories to your son. What do you feel inside? What do you see in your child? Look inward for the answers. Grade 3 is about the "9 year change" where the child suddenly realizes that Santa is not real, etc. He may still play make believe world but KNOWS its all make believe world and conscously sits and go over his younger self as, he will say "rememeber when I was 2 and I used to think Santa was real?" things like that. EDITED TO ADD Sorry -- I have to add Grade 1 is usually Fairy Tales around 5-6-7 yrs old and Grade 2 is more on Sage Stories like Ghandi or Martin Luther King Jr. (for Enki) and Saints and Heros for Waldorf. Grade 2 is about "hero worship" stories like Batman, Superman, etc.
  13. Yes, you can do this Halycon! I am rooting for you! :hurray: :grouphug:
  14. I orderd Botany thru Amazon. Which ever is cheaper is where I buy.
  15. Thank you Halcyon for sharing your journey! It is very inspirational. I just wished I opened this thread AGAIN before I purchased my school books for the year. I might have just ordered OM, too. But you also gave me lots to think about this coming year and how I should go about implementing it. Please keep us posted. :)
  16. For Science: Real Science Odyssey Life, Earth & Space AO Ambleside Online Math: LOF, MUS, MM LA: MCT Poetry: MCT Vocab: MCT Spelling: AAS
  17. We did Logic Countdown lastr year, which was my ds' Grade 4. He likes it alot and likes to do a couple of pages at a time each week. We are doing Logic Lift Off this Fall.
  18. "Begin with the end in mind. Envision your child at 20. Where does he need to be? " LOVE THIS!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  19. I really enjoyed reading how some kids are able to use LOF Fractions and up as a sole math program. I think my DS fits the bill with the personality "Finally! A math program that treats me as if I have a brain and doesn't spoon-feed me every single step!" ..........BUT, I have a hard time letting go and going soooooooooo agaisnt the "how you should really teach your kids math" syndrome. I really want to try it this in the Fall with Fractions and Decimals. We have been using LOF elementary series through Jellybeans and MM and MUS. You ladies are my inspiration to try this
  20. That's what I was wondering. That kind of stuff isn't teacher intensive to me because you do have some ideas, totally creating something new and doing more research to make it work, does. I wish we could have a YAHOO Group to help transition or getting ideas for the discussion groups for homeschool setting. I have an only child, so sometimes its hard for me to think up ideas outside the box, so to speak.
