  1. We are required to have 1.5 credits of Health/Physical Fitness. DS has completed a credit this year (9th) and he will spread the remaining 0.5 credit out over multiple semesters. Out 9th grade credit was called Health and Physical Fitness. I am trying to decide what to call the remaining 0.5 credit, and I do not think I should repeat the same course title. He did a lot of actual physical fitness, of course. Broadly speaking, the health topics we covered were anatomy, personal health care, sexuality, relationships, disease, and lifespan development. For the remaining 0.5 credit, he will continue physical activity. I would like him to branch out and try some new activities, with the goal of furthering his commitment to lifetime fitness. The health topics of this next course will be focused on nutrition and healthy food preparation techniques. We also have a unit to do on stress and mental health. I was thinking about Lifetime Wellness as a course title. Thoughts?
  2. Moxie, it sounds like you overall had a good experience this year. I was a Catholic-school-mom for 15 years before we started homeschooling, and I have some wonderful memories.
  3. We are going to use the Microchem Kit Standard Edition from Quality Science Labs next year. I would love to hear any BTDT experiences. Which labs did you do? All of them? Any other tips? I have to give a shout-out to Quality Science Labs for superb customer service. They went out of their way to help me with the necessary paperwork. http://www.qualitysciencelabs.com/chemistry-labs/microchem-kit-standard-edition/
  4. Based on recent posts that came after mine, I feel like I should add something. I mentioned that in our local culture, high school often goes well past age 18. I should have mentioned that most kids move out at age 18, even if they are still in high school. The government pays them to go to school, so they can do that. As expats, my son could not move out. But he had complete adult-like freedom But of course, college students live at home. So lots of people have 19 year old children living at home. I did when my eldest was in community college.
  5. I see it as no big deal at all. My son transferred from an American high school to an overseas IB high at 17. The IB school required two years no matter what you had done previously, so he graduated at 19. (BTW In the country where I now live, it is not unusual to be 21 in high school. There was a 21 yr old in my son's graduating class. Granted, the system is different - you have to choose humanities, STEM, vocational training, etc. at the start of high school, and if you switch lines you have to start over)
  6. How old is she? Are there any connections? Will there be an unaccompanied minor service? Answers to these make a big difference :)
  7. I have the world's best A+ mom, so I am not at all criticizing her. If my mom had not worked, I certainly would not have graduated from college without debt. Maybe I would not have even gone to college. Because she was a career woman in the 1960s and 1970s without a college degree, she made darn sure that I went to college and prepared for self-sufficiency. For that, I am forever grateful. Nevertheless, I chose to stay home as soon as finances permitted it because of my own not-so-great experiences as a latchkey kid/teen.
  8. I grew up with a working mom in a neighborhood full of SAHMs. Not only that, but I was an only child in a neighborhood full of big families. I was a latch key kid at age 8 (that was c. 1972). I felt like an odd duck.
  9. Coffee in bed every morning. I don't eat food in bed, but I am not opposed to the idea. I just don't.
  10. My son will take Photography and Writing through Brave Writer soon. I think it starts June 1 and runs about four weeks.
  11. We will be using it - starting in August if not before.
  12. I wish they called it something else. Kidswrite just sounds too juvenile for high school. My son took it second semester of 8th and there were high school students in his class.
  13. Our umbrella school only allows courses taught to AP or college level to be designated Honors. There is a whole whole lot of YMMV to your question.
  14. Welcome :) We are finishing our first year of high school. There were some bumps in the road and lessons learned, but we did it! You will, too and you will get tons of help here!
  15. Here is a thread from earlier in 2016 that might add some providers to your list: http://forums.welltrainedmind.com/topic/586413-dual-enrollment-online-list-of-providersfavorites/
  16. I appreciate the kind words, but for the amount of time I have been here my Danish is honestly unimpressive.
  17. We rarely print them out, either. Yet another reason why I only have a fuzzy idea of what page count means!
  18. Brad S, Thanks for your reply. Just to clarify, my query is not actually based on needing to get more content out of my DS. However, I do like to compare his output to what other WTMers are doing, just to make sure we are not slacking :) But your reply confirmed my thoughts - that when I read page count, I should know that there is not a standard interpretation. I automatically visualize double spacing, because that is what we use.
  19. I am in one EU country, eldest boy is in the USA, and middle boy is in a different EU country. We have had better connections through FB calls than Skype. But most communication is through FB messages.
  20. A recent How much writing is enough writing? thread had me wondering (for the umpteenth time) about word count versus page count. I can never adequately sort through this in my head. When SWB talks about a one-page paper, what does she mean? Typed, presumably. MLA format? Possibly. Well, the MLA format plus the required double spacing sure sucks up a whole lot of page one. And thus, I circle back to uncertainty. This week's thread mentions gradually increasing from 2-3 pages to 5 pages to 8-10 pages. Am I the only person who does not instantly have a good feel for what this means? If so, please enlighten me :) For example, when you hear 5 pages, what do you think of? I just found this blog post and it links to a very helpful conversion calculator. How many pages is 2000 words? https://wordcounter.net/blog/2015/09/18/10655_how-many-pages-is-2000-words.html Words per page calculator https://wordcounter.net/words-per-page
  21. Yay for the bump! I love reading self-ed threads. I can't "like" your post, Rosie, so I will clap for it instead. :hurray: My norm is to have many irons in the fire. English We are finishing up literature with Hamlet and the last three books of the Odyssey. Danish I just started a Danish writing curriculum, and I am uber-excited to start writing essays in Danish. I am also reading two novels in Danish. History Quickly working my way through a Great Course about Africa (from Lucy to Mandela) and slowly reading a book about Eritrea (I Didn't Do It for You: How the World Betrayed a Small African Nation by Michela Wrong) Latin I am about half-way through Latin One. For like the third time. --- I really need to prep for Chemistry and brush up on Algebra 2 before August. But I will do that over our summer break.
  22. This was our road trip June 2014, as I recall it. We try not to drive more than six hours daily. We only stayed one or two nights in most places, but stayed 7 nights in Tossa de Mar and 4 nights in Barcelona. The total trip was three weeks long. There were five of us: two parents, two adult children, and one teen. Denmark to Leiden NL Leiden NL to Paris Paris to Carcassonne France Carcassonne France to Tossa De Mar Spain (stayed here a full week) Tossa de Mar to Barcelona (four nights) Barcelona to Uzes France (Pont du Gard and Haribo factory outlet/museum!) Uzes to Luxembourg City Luxembourg City to Bremen Germany Bremen to Denmark If there is anything useful in there, let me know. I love European trip planning :)
  23. It is hard to find places to stay if you don't book ahead. On our long road trips, we often book just a day ahead. ETA: PM me if you decide on Denmark.
  24. I have a minor one, and it hasn't changed in about 12 years. It is just a bit annoying. So maybe not all of them are so bad.
