  1. There is a chance (just a chance, but I need to do research) that we will relocate to Maryland. I grew up in Maryland, so I know plenty about MD. But I know nothing about homeschooling there. Most of what I have found says precious little about high school. My son will be in 10th in 2016-2017, and we would relocate sometime during the school year (an international relocation during the year...someone pick me up off the floor, please). We have been using Clonlara, which awards an accredited diploma. The reason I started with them was because it was the easiest way to legally homeschool in our current location. Well, now I am used to Clonlara and I like them. I feel like I don't want to change to another system if I don't have to. I was reading about umbrella groups. I would prefer something inclusive/secular, and I found MPNL. But their website states that umbrella high school programs may NOT be accredited. Where would that leave us if we stick with Clonlara? With supervision by the county? Know anything about Dual Enrollment? (I am not certain that we have any MD high schoolers on this subforum. If not, I will try to xpost).
  2. Yes indeedy I do. It is wearing on me.
  3. Of late, I am trying not to hate holidays in general. Too many expectations. Bah Humbug lol.
  4. I would also go to the ER, and I would be pushing for the shots. Hugs, Pen. Sorry you are dealing with this.
  5. I doubt it will get worse since it has been a week already. I called the doc on call and he could only offer me a a scrip for prednisone. No more hair color for me :( Reading about a PPD allergy has me freaked out.
  6. If you have had an allergic reaction to hair dye, how long did it take to resolve? Any lingering problems or sensitivities? I am fairly certain that I am in the midst of an allergic reaction to hair dye. I had my hair colored a week ago, and when she put the dye on my scalp BURNED. I made her rinse it out pronto. Looking back, I missed some signs of a developing sensitivity. And I am beating myself up over that. Because I have a long history of randomly occuring , atopic dermatitis, swelling eyes and other fun stuff AND because the reaction was delayed, it took me almost a week for me to realize /decide that it was the hair dye causing my skin to rage. I can't take prednisone or use topical steroids due to Topical Steroid Withdrawal Syndrome. I would only use them as life-saving measures, not for comfort.

  8. I have not had the genetic testing done either. I had the surgery done because my breast cancer was estrogen positive and I was willing to take off any and every body part that would improve my chances of survival. YMMV :)
  9. I had that surgery ten years ago, and hormone replacement therapy is not an option due to a history of breast cancer. I worry about osteoporosis more than heart disease. Other than the surgery, I have no other special risk factors for heart disease. My numbers are good. No regrets, but I can certainly see both sides of the argument. I am glad I had the option.
  10. Cilantro and avocado are two of my favorite foods lol. I am allergic to fish, my skin dislikes eggs and dairy, and my tastebuds dislike meat. That leaves shellfish, fruits, veggies, and starches. I think of myself as selective rather than picky. Growing up, I was never forced to eat anything and I did not force my children, either.
  11. I have a rising 10th grader. The one thing I wish I would have done differently is that I would do Earth Science (including Space) in 8th. I think it is an important topic, but now Bio, Chem, and Physics squeeze it out. And DS is not the type to take two sciences.
  12. Ugh. Different drug, different condition, but IMO my health has been permanently compromised by Big Pharma's game.
  13. Found It :) http://academic.hc.com/home/teachingresources
  14. You can request it from the publisher. I did this recently, and had a quick response. Like the next day. They must hide the request link well, though. I just tried to find it and I can't!!
  15. I just got rid of all of my middle school materials, except for some beloved favorites. You are scaring me :) Good luck - what a nice thing you are doing.
  16. Now that I think about it, I guess I do have some experience with oral exams - I have taken the Danish ones! :blushing: I am not sure how to structure them for other subjects.
  17. I would also be concerned about the power dynamic. As far as whether or not to get involved in such matters, one of the things I ponder is whether or not the fallout from the young adult's decision is likely to land in my bank account.
  18. A couple of posters mentioned oral exams in the alternative assessments thread. I would like to know more about how you have implemented these, if you are inclined to share :) I am in the EU, and oral exams are prevalent. I do not have personal experience with them, but am eager to add them into our assessment toolbox.
  19. Here is a website that I like for alternative assessment ideas: Authentic Assessment Toolbox I think someone mentioned the book Engaging Ideas already - it is good for writing assignment ideas. One thing I would like DS to do next year is a multigenre paper/project. If you google the term, you will get an idea of its intent. Here is one link to get started: http://writing.colostate.edu/gallery/multigenre/introduction.htm I would like to know more about oral exams, but I will start another thread for that.
  20. Gosh, I had not thought about how much transportation factors into this answer. My 9th grader walks or takes public transport, so no driving for me and no leaving him stuck at home if I go out. It is easy for me to be gone for part of the day. He would get lonely if I were gone all day, though.
  21. Actually, I might be able to do this: Health and Fitness Health and Fitness II Health and Firness III Does it look weird that the first half credit lacks a numeral? It is the only one truly finalized, now that I think about it.
  22. I appreciate the suggestions. Because we use Clonlara, we cannot go back and change the title of 9th grade Health and Fitness. I think I must leave it stand. I see the merit in I,II, and III but it is too late for that.
  23. But were the cumulative courses more than 1 credit? That is the reason I was contemplating a title change. I have never seen a single high school course be worth more than a credit. But idk, maybe I am wrong.
