  1. I love dresses even though I don't wear them much. I see plenty of dresses here, mostly with leggings or tights under them. Soon the teenage girls will be wearing short-shorts with tights under them.
  2. We traveled back from the USA last week, and by the end of the weekend were finished with the time change. School yesterday and today, then we are off.
  3. We are using / planning to us those types of documentaries in our health class. I love them!
  4. I am going to use the Novare Chemistry for Accelerated Students next year. I know there has been interest but not many users on the forum, so I will try to thoroughly review it as we go along. I just got the package. I will start a new thread and put the link in here.
  5. I previewed some of them, and thought they were boring. But I realize that this is a minority opinion :)
  6. I think he is going to be very happy with this list. Thank you so much for all of the ideas!
  7. At the moment, this thread is just to answer this question: What masters programs can a psych major apply to? I told him that I would help him research the answer to that question. Then, of course, he has to thoughtfully sort through his options.
  8. I only have experience with Harvey Center Latin. You could try emailing Beth Harvey and asking for references. She usually responds promptly to email.
  9. Good for some students, of course. But probably out of reach for this one.
  10. Not necessarily. Some of the programs in the link I made are for a masters in International Human Rights, for example.
  11. Very awesome, Lori. I didn't know about this program before your post - it looks so interesting!
  12. Adding to the list: Masters Programs in Peace Studies, Peace and Justice, Conflict Resolution. The programs go by various names. http://ac4.ei.columbia.edu/opportunities/student-development-opportunities/masters-programs/
  13. I would suggest that you choose some labs first, and then get the equipment to go with them. Better yet, read a lot of labs and look for commonly cited equipment. Off the top of my head, we have put the following to good use: microscope, a digital balance that measures to .01 grams, a selection of measuring equipment (graduated cylinders, beakers, and the like), pipettes, stirring rods, thermometers, and something to heat with. For heating, we have been happy with our electric hotplate with a magnetic stirrer. Alcohol burners are another option. I have also bought a bunch of stuff that did not get much use. :glare:
  14. As the OP, it is funny to read my 2014 opening sentence: "If my son ends up HSing for high school, we will use Kolbe Academy." Lol, we are indeed homeschooling high school but did not go with Kolbe.
  15. Well, sometimes I wish it were all outsourced. Then I would not agonize over are-we-doing-enough. It would not be my syllabus!
  16. For 9th: Outsourced: Latin 2 Danish is a hybrid. He meets with a tutor, but the class design and most homework is mine. English is also a hybrid. We have a bit of Bravewriter for English, and someone who grades some papers 100% on me: Biology Geometry Health /PE World History For 10th, he will have two fully outsourced classes: Latin 3 and AP Comparative Govt. English and Danish will continue as hybrids. Chemistry, History, and Algebra 2 will be with me.
  17. Thank you for the reassuring replies. He will do some other types of studio art besides drawing, but we are including drawing. It is fundamental IMO. He was "traumatized" about art for a long time, thanks to a wicked, wicked art teacher in a B&M elementary school. I also have Artistic Pursuits Sculpture, and it looks really good.
  18. Have you ever purchased this subscription? Did you think it was worth the $29.95?
  19. I count the reading time. When we finish one book, we start another. I sort of try to figure out his pages per hour pace once he starts reading. He is reading the Odyssey right now. I looked at WTMA and they give it six weeks. The Excellence in Literature curriculum assigns the whole book to be read in one week! Yikes. That would be impossible here.
  20. Some great suggestions. Thank you so much! I think the genetic counseling might interest him, and I bet he never thought of that as an option. He is actually taking Human Genetics this semester. He developed an interest in the hard sciences sophomore year, but his school is a tiny liberal arts campus without a lot of biology courses. He may have to pick up some more bio somewhere somehow if he wants to go in that direction. That is something we have been talking about and mulling over.
  21. DS will have a Visual Arts credit that combines art history, art appreciation, and studio art. My son needs to start drawing instruction at the most basic level. Truly. And his skill level may never reach what I see when I look at high school portfolio examples. Do you think that matters? I am inclined to think that it does not as long as he receives high school level instruction and puts forth high school level effort. He resisted art all through middle school, and now is finally willing to learn it. I am thrilled! I think that learning to draw is a worthy skill, and I really would like him to get over the mental hurdle of "I can't draw."
  22. Have any of your students taken this? Any idea of the workload balance between the photography and the writing? I am thinking about having my son take this over the month of June, but if it is heavy-duty writing then June would not be a good fit. I am guessing it would be informal yet thoughtful writing along the lines of Boomerang Book Club. I am hoping to count the course toward Fine Arts. Does this seem reasonable?
  23. Thank you all for your suggestions and comments. Enough of the sights are open to keep us busy. And since it is impossible for Poland to be "more closed" than our home city for Easter, it beats staying put no matter what  .
