I've done the same thing. It's perverse how how much medieval history I have sitting on my shelves. There is no possible way for one third grader to hear and comprehend even a small part of it. I'm sad about how much we won't be getting to do. I guess I have the same illness as a bunch of you do.

Campgrounds near Gettysburg...
mamatohaleybug replied to 4kiddies's topic in General Education Discussion Board
When we went to Gettysburg we stayed at Cunningham Falls State Park in Thurmont, MD. It's 25 miles from Gettysburg, absolutely gorgeous and a lovely campground. Nothing like a KOA, though. Not sure if you are more of a KOA type or a state park/national park type. We avoid KOAs like the plague. http://www.dnr.state.md.us/publiclands/western/cunningham.asp -

Beautiful song. Thank you for sharing it. What does EO mean? I can't figure it out. :001_huh: Thanks! -
Me, too! Weirdest thing last year: I caught flack from tons of people because I didn't let my daughter have every snow day that PS kids got (our school district missed over 12 days due to bad weather/road conditions). Um, she went to DISNEY WORLD for 10 days during the "school year". We do actually have to learn in a formal setting sometimes! Sheesh!

DC in a heartbeat! Niagara Falls is just okay to me (having been there a handful of times) but DC has SO MUCH to see and do. You could easily head to the beach from there, see historic sites, natural sites, political and government landmarks, the memorials, etc. We were there for a few days in September and wished we had spent less time at the NJ shore and more time in DC. DC is high on the list for a return visit soon. Good luck with hotel shopping. DC is expensive. I'm sure you can find something reasonable if you stay outside the city a bit. Have fun!

How many 'field trip' type days do you have per year?
mamatohaleybug replied to RobinM's topic in K-8 Curriculum Board
As many as we want to! :auto: One of the biggest joys of homeschooling!! :D As for public schools around here, 2 or 3. One big one (an event 30 miles away) and one small one (to the local park), usually. Sometimes an extra thrown in. -

If you could only afford one subject...
mamatohaleybug replied to hsingscrapper's topic in K-8 Curriculum Board
I chose math. Everything else I could comfortably teach on my own with freebies but we've found a wonderful math curriculum and I'd want to stick with it. I love CLE math. Great and very inexpensive. :001_smile: -
Thanks for all of the great ideas!

Total change of subject, but I'd love to know what scripture study looks like at your houses. We're struggling so we've gone to simply memorizing Articles of Faith for now. That's going really well. I think we're going to memorize The Living Christ next. Last year I read stories from the back of the Gospel Art Picture Kit pictures daily. That was great and super simple to implement. We've read some of the scripture readers in the past, too. That might be an idea for 3rd grade, too. My daughter is 8 but not a good reader yet. She can read the scriptures with us but I'm not sure she's comprehending it much yet. So, what do you do?

I'd use Ambleside Online for the majority of what you'd need. Love, love, love that curriculum. :001_smile: Many of the resources are free online.

s/o What are the skill goals for a third grader?
mamatohaleybug replied to sagira's topic in K-8 Curriculum Board
Reading. Reading fluently. Reading for pleasure. Reading. I'm dragging her kicking and screaming with the reading. :( She just had neuropsychological testing and she was at beginning 2nd grade level for reading. The big problem is that she's an old rising third grader (will be 9 in Sept) so I'm starting to feel the pressure. We really need reading to start clicking better. Everything else (cursive handwriting, written narrations, long division, swimming, etc) will be gravy. -

My daughter is using risperdal and it's truly been a miracle drug. I can hardly believe how much it is helping her control her tantrums and rages. She's on a tiny dose and it's amazing how well it's working. I wish I had known about it years ago. My nephew has bipolar disorder and was on Abilify when he lived with me. It helped him so much (when he would actually take it). He did gain weight but he also had atrocious eating habits so it's hard to say that it was the Abilify. Neither child had/has any negative side effects (other than possibly the weight gain with my nephew).
