  1. My boys always worked so much better in the morning, so I had a different schedule for the toddler during those years. I would send the boys to bed around 7:30, but keep her up until 9 or so. Then, my husband & I would have a few hours together before we went to bed. The boys would wake up around 7 and we'd get started on school right away. The baby wouldn't wake up for the morning until 10:30, so we got everything done before she would wake up. The bonus was that she was then ready to do stuff in the afternoon with our homeschool group. That won't work if the kids don't cooperate with that schedule, but for us it worked out perfectly.
  2. I wish I would of said, "I wish I had" so mom didn't lose her mind.
  3. Ohio to start collecting sales tax from amazon
  4. The eraser is the one true way to cover your sins (mistakes). All your sins can be moved to the eraser. You just need to pick it up and use it. Satan doesn't want you to know this, so he created psychologists to make you think erasers are Satanic, and not the only way to salvation. The REAL instruments of Satan are white out, delete keys and crumpling up papers and just starting over.
  5. Posted by SeaConquest on 26 May 2015 - 04:29 PM This is just so rich. http://defamer.gawke...dium=socialflow One of the comments is gold: "It’s only incest if the slutty girls aren’t seducing the son with their whore like sleeping." I didn't feel like this comment got the likes & attention it deserved, so I thought I'd repost it!
  6. We just packed everything up to list our house, tried to move and ended up needing to stay put, so our lives are REALLY chaotic right now. Not to mention we were living with my parents an hour away for part of that time and with my sister 7 hours a way for a couple weeks (so I didn't have to keep the house show ready with us living there!) So, for me, a lighter schedule that made me feel like we were still accomplishing a day's worth of school was to unschool as much as possible. I made up "Video Game BINGO" sheets and told all 3 kids, they could do whatever they wanted for the day, but no screens of any kind (unless an approved educational website) until they finished 5 tasks off the bingo sheet. The activities were things like 'read for 30 minutes & write a summary' or 'build a fort'. I also had completing math on IXL or Khan Academy, things like that. Depending on what kind of situation you are in that requires a lighter load for a season, this might work really well. It allowed for nothing "having" to be done in a given day, but if they weren't finding enough to entertain themselves, then there was a whole list of stuff they could get involved in that I didn't have to oversee and could focus on packing, making phone calls, etc.
  7. It seems like the main problem with your schedule is having to put all the kids to bed once you get home & then be able to function in the morning after getting some down time. Can you give the 13, 12 & 10 year old their bedtime routine so your DH just has to monitor and not really *do* anything other than "Hey kids, it's time for bed!" and then help the twins get ready so all the kids are asleep when you get home? Then you can come home after work, get the house stuff done you need to do & get some unwind time and still get to bed (and up) at a decent time so you can start school before noon?
  8. http://www.upworthy.com/did-you-finish-school-before-2002-john-oliver-explains-how-tests-got-a-lot-worse-since-then?c=hpstream Have you all seen this? I thought it was really interesting and really the heart of why "Homeschoolers take away positive change from the schools" is such a BS argument. Parents & students are boycotting in a wide variety of places, and not a single change is happening.
  9. ok, I ultimately decided it was too insane to change everything up for this coming year. Plus, my boys saw how many books were included for each subject for Timberdoodle and asked if it was too late to stick with VP!
  10. It would be 6th grade for my oldest....I guess that's why I'm considering it at all. 7th grade is when Omnibus starts and he's already had 5 years of VP under his belt. My kids HATE Saxon Math. I only use it because every review I've ever read from someone who used it all the way through is "I hated every moment of it but I'm sure glad I went through it now," So, I'm not completely set on switching out anything (other than what we already own, Solitaire Chess for instance). I'd just love to see my kids excited about school again.
  11. ok, consensus among the masses! That sounds like permission to me :D
  12. I really think I'm having a moment of insanity. After using Veritas Press for 6 years with my oldest and 3 years with my middle I'm seriously considering switching all 3 to Timberdoodle. My youngest has used their products since the beginning (baby, prek-3 & pre-k4). I'm worried that it's not strong enough in math and writing and latin is non-existent. I'm excited about the fact that looking through the catalog my oldest two were all "That looks awesome" and "I want to do that" instead of their usual reaction to Veritas Press which is less than enthusiastic to say the least. But *I* love Veritas Press. Is it ok to completely go off track for a year? What if we never come back? :w00t:
  13. How about a gift bag of travel snacks & drinks? She can enjoy on the drive to FL.
  14. Visualize World Geography. The kids like the corny videos...but remember the names of all the country's by sight. The DVDs also include a separate disk that includes physical geography and interesting facts about the region.
  15. I'd recommend going to a 4-day school week...or even switching the days you do school to do 5, but 2 days are on weekends so you can still visit area attractions and have it to yourself. Being in an area 3-6 months is long enough that I wouldn't feel a strong need to switch up everything in order to explore...just make time for it in my weekly schedule :D
  16. Have you heard of Molecular Gastronomy? I'm getting my husband this set: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B006M64H7S/ref=wl_it_dp_o_pC_nS_ttl?_encoding=UTF8&colid=15Q21XTP1LQ9S&coliid=I1LLZ2S249YUIV
  17. I thought Hart of Dixie had some similar themes to Gilmore Girls, especially if you liked the colorful, small town aspect of GG.
  18. Our library system also has limits on how often a group can rent the space...so we don't use our formal name when we rent. You can rent the space under STEM club 6 times a year, debate club 6 times a year, etc.
  19. Thank you for sharing! I just ordered the student pages for Biology II. Copying out of that giant book was a real pain!
  20. Oh and one more...but this one's not for the kids, but hopefully you'll enjoy it :0 On his 70th birthday, a man was given a gift certificate from his wife. The certificate was for a consultation with an Indian medicine man living on a nearby reservation who was rumored to have a simple cure for erectile dysfunction! The husband went to the reservation and saw the medicine man. The old Indian gave him a potion and with a strong grip on his shoulder warned, 'This is a powerful medicine. You take only a teaspoonful, and then say '1-2-3.' When you do, you will become more manly than you have ever been in your life, and you can perform for as long as you want." The man thanked the old Indian and as he walked away, he turned and asked, "How do I stop the medicine from working?" "Your partner must say '1-2-3-4,' he responded, "but when she does, the medicine will not work again until the next full moon." He was very eager to see if it worked so he went home, showered, shaved, took a spoonful of the medicine, and then invited his wife to join him in the bedroom. When she came in, he took off his clothes and said, "1-2-3!" Immediately, he was the manliest of men. His wife was excited and began throwing off her clothes, and then she asked, "What was the 1-2-3 for?" And that, boys and girls, is why we should never end our sentences with a preposition, because we could end up with a dangling participle.
  21. What did 0 say to 8? Nice belt. Knock, Knock Who's there I eat mop I eat mop who (say it out loud to your kids and they will love it!)
  22. Have you seen Sentinels of the Multiverse? It's a co-op game and can easily be played with 2 or more players. It's a comic book style game where each player is a superhero trying to defeat the same villain.
  23. I do a beachbody video 7 days a week. I alternate between the cardio part & the weight lifting/floor part on opposite days. I find my muscles hurt when I DON'T work out. My back especially. That's probably why I do exercise on a daily basis. It's motivating to do so if you hurt if you don't!
  24. If the kids get their school done in a timely manner with good attitudes, then I take them to lunch on Friday afternoons anywhere they want to go. So far, they are very motivated to keep this up! It's not too expensive (they usually want McDonald's) and since it's entirely up to my discretion I don't have to keep track of tickets, stickers, marbles or anything...which is a HUGE advantage with my ADD tendencies.
  25. So, this isn't a vintage book but I have such a difficult time telling people about the modern test of Woodcock-Johnson III. Especially since it's mainly oral. yeah....
