  1. I'd like to start teaching my kids about basic herbalism. I personally know hardly anything. I grew up in a family that thought herbs were scary :glare: Anyway, I saw this and IF it's as great as it looks it'll be wonderful once it comes out. But what other resources are there for teaching kids (along with myself) about herbalism? Any great books that can easily be turned into lessons? Or websites that can take us step-by-step? There is so much info out there I'm a bit overwhelmed and don't know where to start. Thanks!
  2. No advice - but it's good to know so many other kids are just like my dd7.
  3. Have you seen the Dangerous Book for Boys? Lots of great ideas in there. Do they play musical instruments? They could get lots of practice in! To reduce screen time here, my kids have to earn it by practicing the piano. They get to exchange equal parts of piano practice for screen time. Often they just do their mandatory 30 minutes a day, but when they get addicted to a certain show or game they get a whole ton of piano practice in :)
  4. 30/32 I need to do some research on Maimonides! (And I didn't know the predominant religion of Indonesia). From a cradle Mormon.
  5. YOUR BABY IS ADORABLE! If the hospital was relaxing, I'd love to stay. But it seems that every half hour around the clock someone is coming in to check something. And they won't let you co-sleep. I'm not an attachment parenting guru, but if baby can nurse while I sleep, I get more sleep :001_smile:. My favorite thing is to get out of the hospital ASAP, and have the other kids go visit their grandparents for a few days so baby and I can get some real rest at home.
  6. Wow - this is long and I haven't read anywhere near all the posts, so I'm sorry if I'm repeating someone. But I have no problem at all with public prayer. A prayer at a school (or any) event doesn't bother me. AND I don't have a problem with any particular religion offering the prayer. If someone is not praying to "my" god (as often happens), then I just wait respectfully for them to finish without participating. I like my kids to see such things and understand that the world has many beliefs, and we need to respect them. If I were to write a letter, it would not be to discourage prayer, but to encourage diversity in prayer. If 70% of the people at these events are of one particular religion, then maybe have 70% of the prayers from them, and 30% of the time ask the others. When encouraging diversity, it would be unfair to exclude the majority too.
  7. So I'm realizing how much I don't know. We're in the midwest, but it was a fairly recent move. We've never lived in tornado country before. We don't have a TV. What's the best way to keep updated about the weather? How do I know if/when my city is high risk or not?
  8. thanks everyone for the replies!
  9. great idea! now i can listen to several samples before deciding. Though after listening to several, I've found that they're all a little annoying. hmm
  10. thanks for the reply! has anyone tried this series before?
  11. Music is a huge help when my kids need to memorize something. I've seen several math fact songs on cd, and I'd like to get some. But I don't want to get stuck with something annoying. Any suggestions?
  12. DH is a medical resident. We started homeschooling while he was still in med school and his "breadwinning" was the student loans we got in his name. In a year and a half he'll be done with residency :)
  13. Before kids I worked at the post office sorting mail. I graduated with my AA in American Sign Language Interpreting when I was 7 months pregnant with my first child, and become a SAHM when she was born, so I never used my degree in the workforce.
  14. Here's my favorite junk food idea: Get out six (or any number you want) little bowls and fill them with small treats (m&m, mini marshmallows, fruit snacks, nuts, etc.). Have the kids pick words that they think they'll hear in conference (prayer, Jesus, faith, etc.) and label the bowls. Every time they hear one of the words, they get a treat from that bowl. It's amazing how well they can pay attention that way :) My kids also really loved the activities in the friend (the "put the apostle on the podium" sheet and the "conference squares") today.
  15. I was this teen. Me disagreeing with my parents was not a cry for help - but actually just showing my general distrust of my peers. For example: My parents did not give me a curfew. They didn't think it would be wise for me to stay out late at night, and told me so, but left it up to me. As a teen I was happy to stay out as late as I wanted. I liked to be up late. I trusted myself enough not to get into the trouble that I knew many of my peers would run into if they were allowed to stay out as long an I was. I do not plan to be so lax on the curfew with my own children. I don't know if this is similar to your situation, but I do remember having her perspective in many instances.
  16. We want to keep the Easter baskets really simple this year. We plan to just put one chocolate bunny in the basket with a few books and call it good. But since this is the only candy we're getting this year, we'd like it to be good. Not some hollow waxy-tasting bit of nastiness. Any suggestions for good, decent sized, and affordably priced chocolate bunnies?
  17. Do I just mix it with water? Do I add more water to make up for the tequila and triple sec that I'm not adding? (I'm a little clueless:)) Thanks!
  18. My pampered chef order came, and in the box was a free margarita drink mix. Only problem is that we don't drink. Is there anything non-alcoholic I can do with this mix? Or should I just send it to work with DH and he can give it away?
  19. A friend of mine who couldn't have much sugar used to eat chocolaty cereal for dessert when she was pregnant. I know there's sugar in there, but probably not as much as in regular desserts. Might be worth checking out.
