  1. It runs in my family. I took my son in for a limp and the doctor noted that one leg felt longer than the other. His shoulders also appear uneven. They sent him for an x-ray and we are waiting on results. The tech let him see the films and it did not look like he had a spine curvature. Is that something a lay person would see on an X-ray? When I google it, even the "slight" X-rays seems obvious there's a curve.
  2. We actually are doing just the same this year. Though, were not pausing. We're just using SOTW 3 as a read-aloud. My oldest is using Notgrass's America the Beautiful and my littles are using VP's explorers self-paced.
  3. We did FLL 1-4 and then took a break from grammar for 5th. She used her grammar in Latin so she had no problem picking back up when we started GFTWTM.
  4. Somehow I didn't catch that Dumpling Mother was dreaming. My first impression was just that it was weird. We LOVED Incredibles 2, though. I love how it cautions against excessive screen use and how we are hypnotized by our screens. I love how Helen could participate as the primary breadwinner without Bob being put down for hanging with the kids. And I love how Bob doubles down to get the job done so Helen can do hers.
  5. It's not really. It's now accessible via web platform, but she's not planning on resurrecting the app.
  6. Not really. I had one epidural that worked. And it was downhill from there, ending with a botched one and leaking fluid. #6 was natural because I didn't feel like dealing with the mess.
  7. We do tests and investigations on the same day and school four days a week. Saxon ends up with 132 lesson days and our school year is 144. (We do coop on Fridays that we don't schedule other work for.) I appreciate that it fits in so nicely.
  8. My kids are on a screen fast right now. They do well. But, when they're not "unplugged" (as we call it), they only access screens half an hour a day after a mom-designated chore is completed. The only exception is facetiming friends. (We're mil so their friends are thousands of miles away.)
  9. I didn't question the sight words recommendation because we were in that information dump after an evaluation. I hesitate to deviate from what the evaluator recommended, but he's doing well with beginning phonics and phonemic awareness is an IEP goal of his so I'm sure it's not hurting. ?‍♂️
  10. Interesting discussion. My 5yo goes to special ed preK and they work a lot on phonemic awareness. However our district relies on a "blended" approach that's sight word heavy. For this particular son, the neuropsychologist and SLP both recommended sight words. He's learning phonics almost easier than a lot of the others. HOWEVER, he doesn't have as much vocab comprehension due to the processing disorder.
  11. I avoid conflict a lot. I'm a very anti-drama, you-do-you person. For a number of reasons, my son just switched swimming clubs. We liked the owners and his coach at the old club. We tried to talk with the head coach about certain concerns, but ultimately we felt like he wasn't getting what he needed out of practice and the next level couldn't/wouldn't coach him. Now I feel like we are traitors when we're really just trying to do what's best for him. And I don't like hurting the other team. They were good people. And it will hurt them as he was the top scorer for his age group. And he will have to make new friends with this new team.
  12. I suggested BA because it was surprisingly a good fit for my similar daughter. Surprisingly. FWIW, Saxon has been the answer to a lot of our math struggles with her. Make sure you take the placement test. If he's not tested into Saxon, I'd accelerate through Teaching Textbooks to get to Saxon.
  13. It's based off the biographies. The show is a bit of irreverent humor, but my kids have loved it today.
  14. I'd give him a way to record his thoughts - tape recorder, phone, whatever. Have him dictate thoughts to the device and play it back until he's written the thought down.
  15. I'd really look into Saxon. If he can deal with 54, then he might feel better because it says "5." It'd also use incremental teaching and a good spiral. Or maybe keep him working third grade, but use Beast Academy, which would have him ready for prealgebra in 8th, which is a respectable sequence.
  16. I'd just keep an eye on it because MRSA can get nasty quickly.
  17. I started with B with my dyslexic son when he could read about 2nd grade level. He was aware certain letters said different sounds but didn't remember all of the rules. LOE really did help him cement those rules. A was really about phonemic awareness and how to form the letters. If your child is already reading I'd take the summer remediating letter formation (because I'm picky about that) and then move forward with B in the fall.
  18. I would absolutely use LOE Foundations over Essentials. However, I would skip A and pick up with B.
  19. No. She does not do the mental math, we do the lesson and lesson practice together. She does half the problems from the mixed practice.
  20. I have wheelocks. After a cursory glance it looks like a lot of explanation. LP gives explanations, but they are short and succinct. Wheelocks just looks like so much (English) reading compared to translations.
  21. I took a gamble that we wouldn't run into this situation when they stopped publishing LP since level three wasn't easy to find then. And now the only one I can find is $600+ on Amazon. We have done GREAT with LP so ideally I'd like to move forward with something similar. Any recommendations? We prefer classical Latin. (And we tried Latin Alive and it was a fail here.)
  22. Forty-five minutes for my oldest, but that's because she's SLOW. (She's actually a slow worker with everything.) She just finished Saxon 76 last week. Next fall she will use 87.
  23. Grammar programs often teach kids questions to determine adjective or adverb. FLL teaches adjectives answer, "What kind? Which one? How many? Whose?" And adverbs answer, "How? When? Where? How often? To what extent?" I make my kids memorize these.
  24. I think 45 minutes is fairly accurate. Some lessons will take longer, but we end up splitting them off and completing the next day. In all honesty, GftWTM is HARD so anything after 45 minutes and my 6th grader starts writing carelessly wrong answers. I have a kid who will be fifth grade next year and he will NOT be doing it.
