  1. No problem... I'm happy I was able to help someone. I've gotten a lot of great ideas here and I'm glad I can give back a little.
  2. We only have the Ancient Civilization and Human Body one. Xander loves them. He's quite proud of the fact that he's able to answer some of the harder questions. I too would like some more of them. But they are pretty reasonably priced. I liked that I could get a nice, simple trivia game for the things we're studying at a decent price.
  3. Heh... here's a perfect page for you http://www.homeschoolshare.com/butterfly_lapbook.php Home school share happens to be my favorite place for lapbooking help. Here they even have one for butterflies. They're a wonderful resource. An no lapbooks are not hard... just a little time consuming.
  4. Mommy2BeautifulGirls I answered your e-mail but I'm not sure if it went through or not. My computer is acting screwy. If you didn't receive it let me know!
  5. Err... I like the show Greek on ABC Family... I don't know why... I just do.
  6. I feel the same way! I have no homeschooling mommy friends around here and we can't find a home church either! I would offer my friendship... but I'm guessing you want someone a little closer to you and I'm a little far... so all I can offer is friendship via the internet!
  7. Heh... see now I loved Anders, but not so much now. I loved him with Kara... and I HATED the whole Lee/Kara relationship. (It was a little on the weird side... considering she was his dead brothers girlfriend). I pretty much hated everything after New Caprica. The only thing I think this show has going for it right now is Baltar (I can't think of the actor's name) and Tricia Helfer who I think is one of heck of an actress.
  8. Me... I've been pretty disappointed... but then again I was disappointed with the second half of last season. I've actually been kind of board with this season. (But then again... they've pretty much ruined some of my favorite characters). I would write more... but I'm supposed to be helping my son with math... and he's getting impatient.
  9. I had heard that they were trying to turn what was going on down there into a homeschooling issue. I can understand your sensitivity! (I hope that nothing like that happens... we're looking to leave Michigan and I'm trying to convince my husband that Texas is the place to go!)
  10. I'm not sure wife swap doesn't know how to stereotype. It seems like it's always one extreme or another and I always never agree with either family. Most of the time I just laugh it off and say ABC doesn't have a clue about homeschoolers. But then I think about it for a moment and realize that they're showing America what they think all homeschoolers are like... I guess it just feeds the stereotypes. Ugh... I hate shows like this.
  11. I've OPGTR and we've done wonderfully with it. My son is 2 lessons away from being done with the book and he's reading at a 5th grade level. Mind you this was after using two previous phonics programs that were a lot more costly and got him absolutely no where. Maybe if you told her the lessons were scripted and the pretty much told her exactly what to say and how to do it... it would make her feel a lot better. The thought of teaching reading scared me too! But then I read TWM and I wasn't so scared. Like a previous poster said... have her read that part of TWM too. It gave me a lot of courage.
  12. I love, love, love Keaton. The General is probably one of my favorite films
  13. I'm jealous. I'd love to go... but this year it just isn't a possibility. We have way to many things going on and we had to cut some things out. And that was one of them. I hope you all have fun though!
  14. Bradley and The Thinking Woman's Guide to a Better Birth were awesome! The latter really helped my mom to understand my birth choices. (We homebirthed)
  15. I don't have much to add... but I just wanted to say that taking a probiotic is a good idea. It will help replenish your immune system. My very wonderful doctor (who would much rather go natural then medical) always tells me to go on them when I'm taking antibiotics.
  16. Hi I'm pretty new around here so I thought I'd formally introduce myself. I'm kind of shy... even on the boards... so I don't tend to post a whole lot. This is our first year following the WTM. Of course my oldest isn't technically supposed to be in school, if you go by ps standards. And I suppose you would call him an accelerated learner. He's five years old and I think he finds most of his first grade work a tad easy. He's enthusiastic about learning and a natural at it. It amazes me how much he retains. With my middle one we're taking it a bit slower. We're letting him go at his own pace. And my third little boy he's just playing and pretending to do school. Although he some how knows the letters D and T and can count to 3. I think he picked it up while I was working with my middle one. Anyway... I hope to be on here a bit more and I would love to get to know everyone. I need to come out of my shell a little bit!
  17. I was a big reader as a child and teenager, but even know feeling that I seriously lacked and feel I have to catch up. There are just too many great books I want to read. As a child I read Huck Finn, The Secret Garden, Around the World In 80 Days, many Greek Myths, Anne of Green Gables, The Little House books etc. In high school I got into a little harder reading... Brave New World, Catcher In the Rye, I discovered Jane Austen. I practically wore out my copy of Shakespeare's Sonnets and my Spoon River anthology. I also enjoyed plays by Throton Wilder (I still cry over Our Town, and I every time I think of it I try to enjoy all the small things we seem to take for granted). I also read more modern books... nothing you would consider great literature but still fun to read. And now I still find myself seeking out the classics. I find I feel I didn't read enough of Dickens, or that I want to read the entire Canterbury Tales not just selected ones, or I want to read the philosophical works of Plato, Aristotle, or Cicero. I want to read The Prince or Utopia. (Can you tell I love, love, love to read? I hope this wears off on my children.)
  18. I think that if it really works for her and she enjoys it. You should stick with it. (I'm not saying this because I'm an A Beka fan either) I just think you wouldn't want to change something that's working. It's always good to stay with the same math programs throughout as long as your child is learning.
  19. We had some real problems with Blockbuster. We had several DVD's that were sent to us scratched and broken. Which normally isn't a problem... you just go to their site and explain that the disk wasn't working right and they would send you a different copy. However on two occasions they sent us the same disc back. Needless to say we were pretty upset and after the second time we canceled them and went over to Netflix. The discs seem to be in better shape. We've had them for over a year and only ever had one cracked DVD. And their prices are better.
  20. I use books from all different publishers. I use A Beka math... but I couldn't imagine using them for anything else. And since most of our science and history are spines we use a ton of other books for those subjects too. (Although I find myself buying a lot of things published by Peace Hill Press).
  21. Ick I was just just summoned. I only had to go in for one day and that was yesterday. But I knew from the start that I would only have to go for one day if I wasn't chosen for a case. I wasn't.. in fact all the cases except for one that day were settled or there were plea agreements. I wore nice jeans and a sweater. However I know that, that isn't the case for all courts. The next county over you can't wear jeans. When I called the automated system gave me the dress code. You could try asking for a dismissal because you homeschool. I know a friend on another board that got out of that because of it.
  22. The things we use for the activity guide are the review questions, the map pages and the coloring pages. We also love the extra book lists. However... I'm not one for big projects. It might change when the boys are older... but not right now. However we have used a few of the recipes and have had African and Greek feasts. We invited people over to enjoy the food with us. While some of the preparation was a pain... the actual feast was pretty fun.
  23. Yeah how bossy... But I totally understand... for I too, am the oldest of an oldest. And I added your request to my sig.
  24. Favorite chick flick? Serendipity Favorite romance? Princess Bride Horror? Alien Action/Adventure? Terminator 2 Kid movie? Wizard of Oz Horse movie? I don't think I've seen any... Fantasy? Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Ring Favorite quotable movie? Empire Records Most hated movie? CLOVERFIELD Favorite Jane Austen movie? Sense and Sensability Favorite Comedy? Monty Python and the Holy Grail
  25. We use Abeka for math. I was all for using Saxon because I was told by other people that it was a good program. However... my husband who was homeschooled was against it. His mother used Abeka with him and he loved it as a student. Well then his mother decided to move to Saxon and hated it. So while most final curriculum decisions are left to me, my husband did ask that I use Abeka. And so far... I haven't complained. I like workbook style. My son is 'getting' it. So we're happy.
