  1. I'm thinking about using K12 history with my 8th grader next year. She will be going to ps for high school, so this will be our last year. This is what K12 lists for their history choices for grades K-8: History K History 1 History 2 History 3 History 4 American History Before 1865 American History Since 1865 Intermediate World History A: From Prehistory Through the Middle Ages Intermediate World History B: Our Modern World, 1400 to 1917 Modern World Studies Since they don't seem to correspond exactly to grade levels, I'm not sure what to pick for 8th grade. Would American History Since 1865 be too easy? Thanks.
  2. I'd be willing to bet the test is just fine, but the great majority of schools are using the dreaded fuzzy math curricula, like EM, Connected Math, and Core Plus Math. Until they ditch this model of teaching math, the kids are going to suffer. What would be really nice is if they would disaggregate the data and look at scores as a function of curriculum.
  3. I found the first one at 22, but they were very sporadic until I was about 40. Then they started taking over.
  4. I don't understand. What do you disagree with?
  5. I'd consider those differences "baby talk". Babies respond better to higher pitch, shorter phrases, and longer pauses. Most people, at least in western countries, just naturally talk to their babies that way. I think it's a continuum- extreme baby talk would include lots of invented names and exaggerated intonation. Most of us (I'm sure there are exceptions) would have said "look at the kitty" instead of "look at the cat" to an infant. I would call that baby talk, because you wouldn't talk to an adult that way.
  6. I was also floored by this: and this: The main thing is to talk to them. Constantly.
  7. They're both important. I have 2 recommendations: Here is a fascinating interview with Todd Risley, who co-authored the landmark Hart-Risley study on language development in children. The book How to Increase Your Child's Verbal Intelligence: The Groundbreaking Language Wise Method has a great discussion on how to talk to your baby. I wish I had been familiar with these before my kids were born.
  8. Just wanted to clarify that probability is expressed as a fraction or a decimal. So 1/8 or 0.125 or 125/1000 would all be correct answers.
  9. The chance of each number being even is 1/2. The chance of all 3 being even is (1/2)*(1/2)*(1/2), or 1/8.
  10. No- It's part of the Department of Health and Human Services. I don't think they have any connection to Homeland Security.
  11. I've never heard this before, and I can't find any evidence that it's true. Anyone know of a credible source?
  12. Thanks for the info. Dh talked to the neighbor a little more today. I think the dog has been sick much longer, but got worse in the past week. She had lymphadenopathy, thrombocytopenia, and ulcers/ blisters on her neck (we initially were told they were in her mouth). Doesn't sound like Bordetella. I guess we'll just keep an eye on our dog.
  13. I want to second the recommendation for ABeCeDarian. We are having great success with it.
  14. We're about halfway through Level C and I am really happy with it. It does seem quite a bit more difficult than B-2, but ds is making pretty good progress. The "looping" technique has really helped my son figure out how to attack bigger words. My only complaint is that there isn't any fluency practice, and my son needs LOTS of practice in that area, so we are still using some of the sentences and passages in Level B.
  15. My neighbor's dog died this morning, after a week-long illness with loss of appetite, and sores and swelling in her mouth. She apparently tested positive for Bordetella and was being treated, although I'm not sure what she was being treated with. My Leonberger has had lots of contact with her, and I'm wondering if she should be treated prophylactically with anything, or whether we should just wait and watch. She has been vaccinated, but I know the vaccine is not 100% effective. I also realize those symptoms aren't typical of Bordetella, so she may have had something else going on. Any advice? I'm going to call my vet in the morning. TIA
  16. We were Investigations and Trailblazer (both similar to EM) dropouts. I LOATHE those fuzzy math curricula. We used Singapore and didn't have any problem getting them straightened out. We did have to spend some additional time solidifying math facts. I'd start them a little behind in Singapore to familiarize them with the approach. They'll probably go through those books fairly quickly and soon be caught up.
  17. It might be DeQuervain's syndrome, a common type of tendinitis. This wiki article shows you how to do the Finkelstein's test. If you have pain when you do this, it's probably DeQuervain's.
  18. Does she have symptoms on weekends or school breaks? If not, it's probably stress and anxiety. If she does, something to consider is eosinophilic esophagitis
  19. Both my girls were dual enrolled this year. If you only have to go once a day, and if your son transitions okay, it might be fine. My older dd has to go twice a day every other day, and it isn't working well for her. It takes too long for her to transition from school to home and we have way too much wasted time. My younger dd goes for an hour each morning and that has been fine.
  20. Where did you find this information?
