  1. Yes, that is it...I think the other references are lining up, so maybe I am okay after all (well okay as far as this is concerned :tongue_smilie:) Thanks RootAnn :D
  2. AG for year 1...Revised edition, Copyright 2006
  3. I think so...I bought it as a PDF in 2011, so if there is an updated version, this would be it...Maybe I need an old AG or a new encyclopedia :) ETA: I haven't used the AG previously this year because we are using TOG...We have listened to the SOTW that corresponds with the TOG week plan some weeks, but I never looked up the information further in the AG...I decided to look up the info on Ashurbanipal since this was a light reading week with TOG and my boys enjoyed that chapter in SOTW...But when I looked up the pages in the white Kingfisher, it didn't talk about Ashurbanipal or Nineveh...Instead, the text is about "The Phoenicians"...This lead me to believe I had the wrong encyclopedia :-)
  4. There are encyclopedia references in the SOTW AG for a few different encyclopedias, but not for the white Kingfisher, which is the one I have...Does anyone use the white Kingfisher for SOTW?...Do you know of a schedule or reference that lines up the chapters in SOTW with the old white Kingfisher?..If not, which of the encyclopedias mentioned in the AG do you use?
  5. My advice if you want to do FLL and MCT would be to use FLL for grades 1 & 2 and then do a year of MCT for 3rd grade...You could also do FLL up to grade 3 and then do Island level of MCT for grade 4...If you like MCT, you can continue with it or switch back to FLL...I wouldn't do FLL and MCT in the same year...I don't think it is necessary...
  6. :iagree: That sounds like my DH ;)...I also assign work the next day if I set out to accomplish too much or we have to leave the house...
  7. I don't assign work "to be homework", but it is expected that the week's work will be completed...I have specific times that I work with my boys...My two youngest do all of their work with me so it is not an issue, but my oldest has time with me and independent time without me...He must finish his work in a timely manner, so that means if he does not finish something during his assigned independent work time, he has to finish it during his free time...We usually don't have much of a problem with this because my son knows he must finish his work so he tries to get it done as soon as he can...He is given his assigned reading on Fridays for the upcoming week and his other work on Mondays... As far as math goes, I teach the lesson and he does the worksheets during his independent time...I never sit with him while he is doing math sheets...I give him all of his math sheets for the week on Mondays...I teach the lessons during the week and he works on the sheets...If he doesn't understand something he asks me during his time with me... This way has been working for us...I can leave the house and he will still go to the schoolroom and work on his assignments because he knows that he is responsible for the work unless we have some kind of emergency and I let him know that he has more time to get it done...It wasn't always this way, but he has come a long way since I started really holding him accountable and making his work available to him...
  8. :001_huh: Andrew Kern was posting on the boards?...I did not want to read the entire thread because it keeps growing faster than I can catch up, but I may venture in now...
  9. My first grader has about 45m to an hour in the morning and another hour after lunch, so about 2 hours a day roughly...
  10. I would actually love to be a classical homeschooler, I just know that what we are actually doing doesn't fit the bill, so I may end up being something else only by default ;)...I am still trying to figure out how to put into practice what I believe would be best for us...Knowing is only half the battle, even when you are not on G.I. Joe :D
  11. Okay, I found this link in the Circe thread, and this is what I wanted to know...Very helpful...
  12. Thanks!...I am still making my way through the Circe thread :D
  13. I need help thinking of great children's literature for middle school and junior high age children...I am aware of some high school level literature, but I am not sure what would be considered a classic or must read for the younger group...I am hoping some of you can help by listing some suggestions :001_smile: Thanks so much in advance...
  14. This info is very helpful...I had one book done (OPGTR)...I took it to Staples and they sort of jacked up my book - translation: they cut it on a slant and now it is weird looking...I have been afraid to get another book done although I have been wanting to have a few done...I am glad to hear others have had better luck than me...Maybe I should try the sharpie thing...
  15. Caesar's English can definitely be used as a stand alone, probably more so than anything else in the program... The new Caesar's English 1 is already available...It came out last week I believe...
  16. Our year this year will be 36 weeks...I am not sure for next year...We may do 42 weeks if I plan a 6 week summer session at the end of next year...I guess it will depend on whether or not we are forced to take more time off during the year...If we do go with a 42 week year, the last 6 weeks would be just one or two subjects... ETA: DH works 48 weeks out of the year and always jokes that the boys should do the same :-)
  17. My son is in 5th and is doing history for the first time...He is doing ancients, TOG yr 1...He is doing fine with it... IMO, it is better to have reading, math, and writing skills where they should be verses knowing history facts...Not knowing how to read and write well with understanding is the biggest hindrance to upper level work, not a lack of history knowledge...
  18. On books alone (not including curriculum), buying everything, I will spend between $750 - $1000 for my three boys...The figure fluctuates depending on what I can find in good condition used...If I bought everything new, it would cost me about $1350 if I include science books...
