  1. Oh, yeah forgot about them....will keep them in mind...thanks! Glad it is going well for you!
  2. Does anyone know of any online schools/teachers who use Harold Jacobs for Geometry? I know of Liberty Tutorials but not sure if the days/times will work for us next year and wanted to see if there were any others. Even though my oldest has done Derekowens.com I don't think this will be a good fit for my middle son since he needs more one on one live aspect. Geometry is one subject I know I can NOT teach! I don't go past Algebra I in math!! TIA!
  3. Thanks everyone so much for your comments! Lori D....I think you are right on the courses you pulled out and plan to stick to that.
  4. Thanks, that was so helpful! If I remember right, (we are in VA) the homeschool association said that if it was truly a HS class it doesn't matter what course it is if taken in MS. I wasn't sure about English and History either. I know that foreign language here counts because I took a foreign language in 8th grade and it counted on my HS diploma and I was public school. I just wasn't sure about if each course had to be taken each year or if we could vary them a bit giving them more options. Thanks again!
  5. I know the credits my son needs to take in HS for "competing" with the state requirements but was wondering if they all need to be completed in each year or can they be taken different years as long as he completes the number. (I hope I am making sense) in essence when he needs 4 yrs. of Science or Literature/Writing etc. is he required to take them each year in HS or can he count some he took in MS that were actual HS courses count as part of his 4 yrs. when determining the number? Trying to finish his HS plan and my son wants to take college courses early and you only need so many Lit/Grammar classes in college along with the other subjects. :) Thanks!
  6. FWIW.....let them read it, that's my advice. You can always reread a good classic and get more out of it at an older age, I don't think it would harm them at all, just stretch them as a reader, just be cautious of sensitivity issues. :)
  7. I would think so. The classes we have taken there have not been too rigorous. I would check each class carefully and look at what is to be covered each week. You can usually contact the teacher as well if you have questions or concerns before registering. HTH
  8. Thanks so much Lori for your lengthy comments! So much too consider and I appreciate you taking the time! It is such a hard decision. Part of me wants to hold on and cram in as much as I can into that mind of his but I know he wants to just go on an get enough college done while he can while in HS. He has taken classes at Bluefield College this year and has really liked them and done well. The price is right at just under $150 a COURSE! The college he wants to attend transfers all of their classes and there is no limit for freshman status. He wants to either double major early or get his masters at the end of his 4 yr. time at the college. Such a hard decision. I am going to ponder awhile on your comments! Thanks again! And any other thoughts are welcome!
  9. Pulling this up in case anyone else knows of any other new ones. I wish I could afford Belhaven's but too expensive for us. Veritas Press requires you to be in their diploma program which I don't want to do so I am out of options. :( I wish Roman Roads Media had an option or Wilson Hill! :-(
  10. We really liked The Fallacy Detective and The Thinking Toolbox for 7th grade. Then we went into more formal Logic. Great intro and fun!
  11. Awesome! My son just finished taking 2 this past semester. He took Writing and Music Appreciation at Bluefield College (online dual enrolled). Our local state school would not allow him to take any courses at 15 and our local CC is rather expensive. Bluefield is only $135 a class NOT credit so ultra cheap...so we tried Bluefield and really liked it. He did very well getting A's in both and seemed to like it. Wants to do just DE next year since he is able. Says I am way too hard on them and college is much easier than mom. :-P I know that is probably true. Forgot to mention, Bluefield is accredited to every VA school and also where my son wants to attend so we know that all classes will transfer. Can't beat the price for both HS and college credit particularly on subjects that are not "major" oriented.
  12. Would love to know if anyone has used Cornerstone Tutorials with Cathy Flowers and how it compares to Omnibus at VP/Wilson. Thanks!
  13. Would love to know if anyone has used Cornerstone Tutorials with Cathy Flowers and how it compares to Omnibus at VP/Wilson Hill. Thanks!!
  14. Debating next year whether to continue with Omnibus or jump ship and go this route. We have used Veritas Press and then switched to Wilson Hill. Even though I like WH pretty well, the meeting 2x week can really cut into learning time since I have to take my kids to the library every time they have class. Our internet at home does not support their platform. :-( Anyway would love to know if anyone has ever had a class with Cathy Flowers at Cornerstone Tutorials and how you like it. Thanks!
  15. I think it might be later this year? Since it is new I heard it might not be until January. Has anyone heard this too?
  16. My son loves James Harriot books as well. If you are looking for stories similar that are science related my son likes Henry Fabre's books one particularly that has pictures is Children of Summer on Insects. Other ideas: Complete Tales of Beatrix Potter, Thornton Burgess books. HTH
  17. Rod and Staff is very good at explaining diagramming and my kids have done well with it. I would recommend year 6 or even possibly 7 depending on what background they have had in grammar, and yes just doing the diagramming. I have heard many people use analytical grammar but I am not familiar with that one. Good luck!
  18. I can't access your email can you send me a message this way and then I can get with you another way. I was interested in 4 if you get enough. Thanks!
  19. This is a fun thread to read...wow the ideas are so diverse! :) DS15: Music/ministry with law as back up. DS12: Military (dreams of becoming a Navy seal...we'll see) :D DS 4: Doesn't know (too many choices...:)
  20. My son's online class were not proctored and done online. Based on their honor code.
  21. After years of Shurley we are doing Rod and Staff and love it but still find myself implementing those jingles!! :)
  22. I agree with teacher selection but have enjoyed classes from: Potters, Landry (Latin awesome teacher-Mrs. Farthing), Wilson Hill Academy (great teachers there) Derek Owens, our favs here
  23. Great ideas above...one activity that worked so well at the 1 1/2 yrs-4 is a big bin of rice with spoons, cups, you name it....he would spend about 40 min. each day on that....how bout letting them explore and play outdoors! My son plays at least 2 hrs each day coming up with something to do....:)
  24. If I dont do it first thing it wont get done so I get up at 5:30 to jog or do toning before my littlest one rises. 20-30 minutes is all I get but it is worthwhile and just what I need. It is hard to get up that early sometimes! :-/
