How often is Rosetta Stone Homeschool Version on Sale?
Homeschoolmom3 replied to OrganicMom's topic in K-8 Curriculum Board

Hobbies for 9-10 y/o boys that aren't into sports?
Homeschoolmom3 replied to Faithful_Steward's topic in K-8 Curriculum Board
We have a Robotics club where we live. There is also many activities that he might enjoy in your local parks and recreation in your county? Like others had mentioned, 4-H would be good to check out! My son got into woodworking, (we live in the woods) exploring, carving, building things in our backyard at that age too. I recommend anything outside! It just does something to your brain and I can vouch for myself and my kids! :) -
I think it depends on the age and maturity. My oldest didn't want me to look at his papers he submitted in Middle school from about 7th grade on. He was fairly grounded and so I let him run. :-) My middle son, who is in 7th this year is still needing some look overs and some gentle reminders and some guidance before submitting his work. I think within another year he will be good, but I think it really helps anyone to have a quick look to point out any errors one might have missed.

Love the enrichment guides and recitation books for pre-k -1st grade. I liked the bird study but we did not do the workbook questions. I used the pre-k curriculum and tweaked it a bit and we enjoyed it as well as K but couldn't use it as written since my son had learned reading on his own so I ended mostly using the enrichment guide. However, if you're child is right on for grade level on everything a great choice I think for the early years. HTH

We did Total Health as well. I am not a fan of textbook learning and my son was not a huge fan, however it got the check boxed and I felt that it was pretty thorough and went into many topics that I had not covered with my son. I think it was a good all in one, with a Christian emphasis which I liked and focused on some issues that our high school kids do need to hear. Overall, I would probably would use again so I would not have to "come up" with one on my own. HTH!

We have used Song School Latin, Latin for Children, and Latin Alive. This was my first exposure to Latin too and this series has worked great for us. Reading and Reasoning was great too. My middle schooler will be doing Art of Argument next year, but looks great. That is all we have used of theirs.- 20 replies

Yeah! :hurray: My son adores Reading Eggs, heck that is how he learned to read so well and so young I guess. :001_huh: Might stick with Mathseeds to make it easier but definitely going to check out the other ideas. Thanks everyone! -

Awesome, thanks everyone! Yep, don't mind "repeating" some K material but hoping to move into more 1st grade by the fall. Looking for internet choices. -

Anyone know of any good online math that is similar to Reading Eggs? I know of Mathseeds but it only goes up to K math? Thanks!

Yet again...another phonics/reading question :)
Homeschoolmom3 replied to Homeschoolmom3's topic in K-8 Curriculum Board
Wow, thanks everyone! It's so helpful to talk with those that have been there or have experience. :) To put my mind at ease I probably will just quiz him a little at a time on all of the phonograms and if there are any he does not know work on those with fun games. I didn't really want to buy a "whole" curriculum but just need a little hand holding. :p I guess from there will decide later on a spelling route, decisions decisions! -

Homeschoolmom3 replied to Homeschoolmom3's topic in K-8 Curriculum Board
Yes, you are probably right. It is just so hard to let it go and honestly I just can't wrap my head around how he learned to read by himself, except exposure to reading (we do read alot). I have a hard time just letting be, however I do not want him to hate learning and my sister (who is a Kindergarten teacher) is still wondering why I feel the need to complete a "curriculum" to check the box. Thanks for all of your thoughts a bunch to ponder. :) -

Yet again...another phonics/reading question :)

We have been reading various readers. Hard to gauge exactly what he does not know? Anyhow, we have been using Pathways and just going through each book that we have. He seems to like those pretty well (still trying to see where he at though). I am a curriculum junkie so he is also reading or has read: Bob Books, Primary Phonics sets, Dr Seuss books, Frog and Toad series, Little Bear, (all beginning readers, etc.) Still though, I don't know how he knows everything and I know how important phonics is to deciphering big words later on and spelling. What would you use then? Thanks! -
You all are the greatest and since I am tired of debating I came to the hive to get your advice. :-) My youngest learned to read very early and has been reading for a couple of years now without any instruction from me. (Granted he has played on starfall and readingeggs through out the years. He loves to read but not a huge fan of "doing school". He is reading books that are considered (2nd grade level). We just started about two months ago using OPGTR we started from the beginning and we are now on lesson 80, he is doing okay with it we do a few lessons a week but he does not like the book. When I get it out he complains (we really only do it for about 5 minutes or so.) I think if I just used it as a guide and did it more with games or other manipulatives he wouldn't mind it. I am debating as to what to use for him next year he will be about 5 1/2 when we start in the fall. I want him to have a good solid phonics foundation and want him to know all of the phonograms well to help with spelling down the road. I am looking for something open and go and not too teacher intensive. I am debating between using OPGTR (continuing on where we are) and maybe reinforce the phonograms with the game book of LOE or using RLTL started from the beginning I guess but I wonder how far I would go or should do within a year? Any other thoughts or recommendations? Thanks everyone!

HELP! Kindergarten/1st grade curriculum ideas?
Homeschoolmom3 replied to Homeschoolmom3's topic in K-8 Curriculum Board
Thank you for all of your replies! Part of me so wants to just let him be since he will only be in Kindergarten and part of me is needing that assurance of covering all the basis and moving on. (My type A control personality coming through). I totally burned out my middle son in elementary grades and I hate I didn't give him more time to just play. I guess I need reassurance and it is hard to break old habits! I want to know that if we don't do anything formal in K it is not the end of the world. Ha!! Thanks everyone! -

HELP! Kindergarten/1st grade curriculum ideas?
Homeschoolmom3 replied to Homeschoolmom3's topic in K-8 Curriculum Board
I guess I would love to have a set curriculum so I am not missing anything or there are no gaps. That scares me so! Would love to have an all in one, I have looked at MFW, Ambleside Online, Memoria Press, etc. but the phonics/reading always throws me. Could do that separately I guess but where to begin? uhh! -
HELP! Kindergarten/1st grade curriculum ideas?
Homeschoolmom3 posted a topic in K-8 Curriculum Board
I am in need of assistance. :-P I am just not sure what to do for my 5 1/2 yr. old this fall in regards to where to go, what to use, what grade to "put" him in? He is not a typical kindergartner and I don't want to bore him, don't want to push him. I am just at a loss! A bit of a background he learned to read at 3yrs. old (I did not teach him) I have two older boys and they have gotten most of my attention. The only thing I have done for my youngest is READ. He has always had such a LONG attention span at such a young age. He would sit and look at books for hours when he was only 2. He would sit and let me read to him an hour at a time (and would probably sat longer but I always capped it at 1 hr at a time) and has been that way since then. He will go in his room in the morning after our Bible time and he will sit and read his books for about an hour. He loves to play outside and we are outside for most of the afternoon after lunch time. Right now we do a morning time, recitations, readings (many diff. subjects), he reads to me a bit, we play some math games together and he is into Reading Eggs these days (and probably where he learned special sounds, etc. to read) we dabble a little with foreign language, writing when he wants to and takes piano lessons and attends an art class. He is currently reading 2nd grade readers. The only thing he wants to do "school wise" is read his books, play math games, or any games. If I try to add other stuff he isn't too interested. So that is where I am out how much should I make him do school wise? Where should I put him at? I want to make sure there are no gaps in his reading, I started with OPGTR which he balks at a bit. Will that be enough? I am so out of my realm, I was able to use a straight curriculum with reading with my older boys and added things to the mix. I need something easy to implement and don't want to invent the wheel since I have my older boys to tend to as well. It would be nice to have a full curriculum where I can just tweak it a bit to my liking but basically all done. He writes his letters pretty well, I would say he has Kindergarten math down. Should I start him at a 1st grade level? I have looked at every curriculum out there and of course nothing will totally work for where he is at. I am big on good classical books and would consider myself a true Charlotte Mason follower with a throw of the new "classical" view thrown in. :tongue_smilie: Now who is willing to take a stab? Thanks for all of your help! I am still debating which way to go with him I feel I will be going a different path than my older two. I hope I am making sense at this point my head is spinning! :001_unsure:
