We were big Shurley fans here but wanted more "regular" diagramming for middle school. We did Shurley through 7 and then switched to rod and staff in 7th grade and started in the 6th grade one progressing with courage and it was almost all review (granted he does take Latin and it coincides nicely) so if they are strong in their grammar 7th grade might be better? Thank you! Any others? -
Thanks for the replies, must be another Cornerstone? It is history/literature course and has different levels beginning with Starting Points by David Quine. We found that Potters School offers this course there and that is what we decided this school year. This is the one I was looking at called Starting Points by David Quine and it is only a course that covers history/literature very similar to Omnibus. http://www.christianbook.com/starting-points-world-view-primer/david-quine/pd/777101?event=ESRCG I did decide to go with it I am very excited about the book choice and so we will see how it goes. :)

My friend is in need of help creating her son a "history course" next school year. Her son will be in 7th grade and really enjoys good literature. I am helping her create an awesome course but I am just one person, would love to hear everyone's thoughts because you guys are AWESOME! Looking for a solid spine ideas and great lit in that time period. They are devout conservative Protestants and she is raising her children in a strict environment so questionable literature for that age is out. ;) Thanks so much!!

Another good one is On Writing Well (enjoyed this read last year!) and my son really enjoyed: Classical Rhetoric for the Modern Student for high school as well. -

Was thinking about this, my church has just started a Spanish service but it is mostly for adults but I guess we could listen in. :) -

I am so hoping I get some cable internet out here where I am at! I know that would really open up our options! Will keep that one in my back pocket. :p Thanks! -
Wanting to find ways to implement a learning language in my Kindergartner. I have checked with the library no story time right now in Spanish. What are some creative ways to get integrated with others learning the language that wouldn't be too costly? Any ideas? I have a few music CDs and Muzzy. What has worked with your kids? Thanks!

OPGTR is easy to implement and all in one book. :-) I enjoyed it and when we used it. Another "digital" idea if you don't mind electronics is using Reading Eggs. My son taught himself to read just by reading on his own and playing around with Reading Eggs a few times a week. You can use Reading Eggs for a full phonics program and can go into the teacher's section see where your child is and can work on the special sounds where your child is at using any way that might help. (flash cards, games, etc.) I should be a spokesperson for them. HTH

Veritas Omnibus Program
Homeschoolmom3 replied to Mosaicmind's topic in High School and Self-Education Board
My boys have done Omni 1-3 and my oldest has done Romans Road Media - Greeks and the Romans. Here is my take: I think that RR is more thought provoking and have really enjoyed the book choices. I believe it is best fit for high school. Omnibus can be started in middle school (I started my boys in 7th and they liked it and learned from it but they did an online class with it and therefore helped with the learning and getting more from it. I have looked at the self paced VP and did not care for it, much preferred Wes Calihan and his videos (my oldest loved them and learned alot!) My one son who took the RR classes is moving on to college courses this year so he won't be finishing out the series but I think it is a strong curriculum and I have learned a lot myself reading along with him! But either way, I don't think you can go wrong and your kids WILL be ready for college work. I think Omni and RR are college level in high school. :-) -
I agree...I used Fix it last year for my Middle schooler and I looped it with Rod and Staff. I don't think it's enough even with our Latin studies yet I am a big grammar/writing gal! We did as much as we could do orally with the two programs and it worked great!

Busy doing my planning for next year and was wondering for those who make up their own Science curriculum and don't stay using a textbook per say or maybe if you do can still help. ;-) What do you require for the kids to achieve during the course? lab book, some type of notes?, memory work, research, papers, projects, etc. Would love to see what all you require! :-) Thanks for any input!

Okay, thanks a lot Silver moon now I don't know what to get! So I have The Children's Hour complete set and looking to invest in one more set of books so which would you recommend and is least NOT like the Children's Hour! I am then going to plunge in and look at all of the chapter books. So which one? Childcraft books, Collier's Junior Classics, My Book House or Journey Through Bookland? Oh, if you could all recommend one that is a must for a set and maybe if there are ones that you like of the others in regards to certain volumes maybe I can look and get just a few. :D I so far have one vote for My Book House from Carol in Cal. Can't wait to dig into all of the others, thanks again EVERYONE!!
