  1. Dark chocolate makes my teeth and gums hurt. I love smooth and creamy milk chocolate, especially with nuts, toffee, caramel, or mint. :-)
  2. I found this sight recently when I was having similar questions to the OP. In fact, based on the picture, my coloring is similar to hers as well. I decided I was right between "soft autumn" and "soft summer," which overlap anyway.
  3. I have a friend who swears by this. She puts it on her kids feet (with socks) as soon as they get a head cold.
  4. Wow, I'm impressed. Sweyn Forkbeard (Canute's father) was an obsession of mine for a short period of time. He's something that I can't talk to anyone about, because noone in my universe knows who he is. When I mention him, I feel like a magician pulling a dragon out of a hat.
  5. I'm falling behind already. I'm still on More Than Conqueror's and I'm working on Hawking's A Briefer History of Time as well.
  6. I only drink *real* hot chocolate, and I drink it every day. It never sits long enough to form a skin. :001_smile: No marshmallows. Whipped cream if we have it, which is not often.
  7. After the oil spike in 2008, I have kept the house at 67 in the winter. When oil was cheaper, I kept it at 70. This is probably going to change again. Oil prices are rising. After seeing this thread I'll be trying to lower the temp at night and when we are all out.
  8. Well, I'm 46 and I had problems with dry irritated eyes, especially at night and in winter, for about 3 years. This year I'm fine. Making sure I was hydrated helped.
  9. Inferior being here. Proud to be counter culture. It don't mean a thing if it ain't got that zing! Chopped celery and apple are okay too. :D
  10. This is great! I just shared it on my facebook page. Delegate Barlow sent us a copy of a letter the Library of VA sent his office. It basically states that the library has the right to deny a card to anyone out of its designated region. This is in spite of the fact that we are helping to support the library with our tax money. To add to the misery, our little town's librarian informed me our county is cutting their funding. Our library is the size of a large living room.
  11. A friend and I are just finishing up this study. We've been doing a lesson every other week. For the life of me, I can't remember anything extraordinarily different about lesson 4.
  12. I personally know an alcholic who is on SSI because alcohol has physically disabled him. He uses his checks to go on binges. The law may say one thing, but in practice...
  13. Yes, I worry all the time. But that doesn't stop me because the alternative doesn't appeal to me at all. I didn't use an official college prep curriculum but I have a child at a major college. In fact I didn't do a whole lot of teaching in the high school years, more like facilitating and empowering. :D We did cover all the major subjects that most colleges expect, but we used whatever material we were comfortable with. Really the thing that mattered the most in the end was his ability to get A's at the local community college when he was still in high school.
  14. I just skimmed what's been stated already, but I haven't seen anything about the space program. I really think waaay to much unnecessary spending goes on there. I really think all research and other activities designed to figure out how we can live and travel in space commercially should be stopped. I'm a realist. It ain't going to happen.
  15. I found this quote and other similar ones: "The Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas reports that in 1919 the average American had to work 158 minutes to buy a three-pound chicken; nowadays, 15 minutes gets you the bird. U.S. consumers spend roughly 9 percent of their income on food compared with 11 percent in the United Kingdom, 17 percent in Japan, 27 percent in South Africa and 53 percent in India. (2009)"
  16. I tend to relate more to the characters with a rich internal dialog going on, who work out life's difficulties in their own way: Jo from Little Women The girl on the island in Island of the Blue Dolphins Claudia from The Mixed up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler The girl that married Sherlock Holmes in Laurie King's books (why can't I think of her name) I've got to add: Babbette from Babbette's Feast
  17. Well, it didn't come in neat little sliced strips then. Maybe they cooked it thicker than we do, and they probably didn't cook it to that nice just crispy stage. It may have been cooked just enough to be heated through.
  18. I think you would have to do a comparable analysis of the value of money as well. You might find that people then spent a greater portion of their income on food than people do today. However, anecdotally, I know that fish is much more expensive than when my father was a child. Fruits and vegetables (in season), cornmeal (used to be the cheapest staple), and molasses are also much more expensive, IMO.
  19. I read The Help last week because I saw so many people recommend it. I'm still working on More Than Conquerors. I'm also reading throught Detectives by Gaslight and I have a few Astronomy books lined up.
  20. I know people who have been sucked into and escaped from "shepherding" churches, but I don't know what an AG church is. Could you clarify? Thanks.
  21. I buy: gift bags, greeting cards, tissue paper for gift bags, candles (made in usa only), toothbrushes (made in usa), seasonal candy, batteries. I have bought knit gloves, knit hats and socks in the past. When I used V05 and Suave, I would buy them there. I have bought name brand foods that have not expired there as well, I just make sure the package is not damaged: Progresso soups, pretzels, crackers, and gingersnaps. I also confess to buying bags of cheap plastic army guys. :-)
  22. A new article http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/01/05/dead-birds-fall-from-sky-_n_804591.html to add to the conversation.
