  3. I am sorry for the loss of your Grandmother. :grouphug: Dh and I faced a simliar situation this spring with the passing of his grandmother. In the end we were unable to attend the funeral (Due to Dh's project load at work.) Dd selected a wreath to place on Grandma's grave on Memorial Day.
  4. We changed the name school to "learning time" in our home. ;)
  5. Recently Dh and I were having a conversation in regard to Plato and his influence on the author, C.S. Lewis and his "Chronicles of Narnia" series. I jokingly made the remark maybe Dd should start reading Plato after we finish The Chronicles of Narnia because of the critical thinking questions she has been asking us both. Dd who caught the tail end of the conversation responded with "Why do you want me to read playdough? It's not something you read, it's something you play with." LOL! :D
  6. Bravo! :hurray: You really should consider writing a book Jean! :grouphug:
  7. Last year while Dh did Beautiful Feet Early American History Primary with Dd, she and I embarked on a journey through the American Girl historical series. Rebecca 1914 was our first stop where we learned about Judaism, the Russian culture and American History/culture in 1914. We even got to go on a field trip to a synagogue service and learned how to cook Jewish food. Julie 1974 was like a visit in Dr. Who's Tardis going back in time. We learned about Watergate, women's rights, the Bicentennial, Ford-Carter elections and save the eagles/Earth Day plus the funky culture of the 70's. This year we are starting with Samantha 1904. It isn't exactly classical education, but the books do a good job of immersing your daughter in the history/culture of the time period.
  8. B is for Betsy series by Carolyn Haywood 2nd Grade Little House on the Prairie series by Laura Ingalls Wilder 3rd, 4th and 5th Grade Nancy Drew by Carolyn Keene 6th Grade Anne of Green Gables series by Lucy Maud Montgomery 6th grade Classic literature, The Chronciles of Narnia and Lord of the Rings 7th-adulthood
  9. Dd went through a simliar experience when she was 7 yo. Dh and I brainstormed over the situation. In the end we discovered we weren't teaching to her learning style. Because we were 18 weeks into the school year we revised the material we were using. We began reading up on her learning style and looking for resources which would best fit her. The following year teaching to her learning style made a HUGE difference for her! The love of learning was back and it was a great school year!
  10. :grouphug: Mere Christianity by C.S. Lewis The Best of Catharine Marshall by Catharine Marshall
  11. Bump! This is what I heard growing up and it was taught in our school. It's interesting to talk to people who were raised in the south and north. The northerns have a different take on the war than do the southerns.
  12. Introduction to World History: A Child's History of the World Why: Dd loved the way V.M. Hillyer presents the material in story format. Plus at the time Calvert published an interactive book on cd-rom which was great! World Geography/Cultures: Galloping the Globe A well rounded curriculum which was thorougly enjoyable for our entire family. US History: Beautiful Feet Early American History Primary and Intermediate American Girl Dh chose BF because he loves the layout/scope and sequence. Dd loves it because of the book selection. Dd and I chose to do the American Girl series because it allows you to explore the history/culture of the time period through the eyes of a girl.
  13. Yes it can. I began having "hot flashes" as a teenager.
  14. Bravo! :hurray: Thank you for your words of affirmation!
  15. I received a message from Dr. Chrissi Hart today on FB. She is planning to read "The Last Battle" after "The Magician's Nephew." Dr. Hart has a FB page "Readings From Under the Grapevine Listeners."
