  1. I choose Lucy and the wardrobe for a couple of reasons... 1. I teach literary analysis/apologetics classes on C.S. Lewis and J.R.R. Tolkien. 2. This is my favorite scence from the book and the movie "The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe."
  2. It's interesting you mention this. Because this has already happened with one of the children in this group. The child came to me with the concerns you listed above. We had a LONG talk about what was going on in their homelife/homeschool. For the most part I just listened but only gave input when asked for.
  3. Bingo! You read my mind. I've already got names of famous homeschoolers listed in my presentation.
  4. Yes, but we will have to drive 45 minutes to 1 hour. There is a subgroup within this group which have the same attitude/values towards education, so we hang out with them.
  5. Both I did mention God is the God of English, science, history and math. Just looked at me dumbfounded.
  6. I LOVE it! I teach a literary analysis/apologetics class for this local hsing group. I am amazed at how many students can not think for themselves, let alone defend their faith. Scary!
  7. This coming Thursday I am scheduled to do a presentation at a "Mom's Topic Tea" on the subject of "educational philosophies." The presentation is going to be "non sectarian" with the focus on the educational philosophies of Classical Education, Charlotte Mason, Unit Study, Unschooling, and Traditional Textbook. I should point out the presentation is for the local Christian hsing group which tends to focus on developing godly children rather than educated ones. With that in mind pray this presentation goes well and the mothers would be receptive to learning about the educational philosophies. Thank you! :)
  8. I am dismayed at the number of hsing students in our local hsing group who have never been exposed to classic literature/the great minds and conversations. It is amazing to sit in on the monthly mother's group I facilitate. Some of these women have been hsing for years and have never bothered to expose their children to classic literature/great minds and conversations. As one mother put it "Reading the classics means you have to think and thinking is too much work." Interestingly enough majority of the local hsing group would rather their children grow up to be "godly rather than educated." Classical education is viewed as "leading your child down the road to free thought thinking and sin." If you are well educated and can think for yourself then you are a freak. However if you can recite all the books of the Bible, chapters of the Bible and use a Bible based curriculum, then you are acceptable. I did point out C.S. Lewis was a godly man, but he was also well educated. The two can go hand in hand. I got some strange looks after I made the comment, you would have thought I was speaking a foreign language. :001_huh: Previously our family had lived in a major university city where classical education was held in high regard. The general consensus of the hsing community there was to provide your child with an excellant education. To be honest I find the attitude of the local hsing community bewildering. Why wouldn't a parent want their child to be educated as well as godly? Has anyone else had this experience in their community?
  9. WAHOO! Out of curiosity what resources are you using with your kidlets?
  10. This week's question is "What is the significance of your avatar?" Is there a story behind it? Is it a photo which is special to you?
  11. :grouphug: Praying for you and your family.
  12. :iagree: This is what our church does.
  13. :grouphug: I understand. My mother was bipolar. Working with a physician who understood bipolar disorder and medication enabled my mother to live/enjoy life.
  14. :iagree: My favorite memory was going trick or treating for the first time. I dressed up as a witch, like Lucy in "It's the Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown."
  15. :iagree: I've noticed this within our local hs groups, church and family. Consequently the "hoverers" have produced one of two types of children, the fearful and the rebellious. I've dealt with both of these types in the form of young adults. Child A is fearful of everything and at the age of 20 is still clinging to their parents, still living at home and is unable to make decisions on their own. Child B at the age of 18 is rebellious. According to Child B their parents are "Bible thumpers," everything they do revolves around the Bible, reading the Bible, and having a theology lesson. The child has attempted to talk with their parents about how they feel, but the parents are too busy reading their Bibles to take notice. Consequently Child B has rejected their parents "Christian faith" and is in the process of discovering who they are, what they believe/why/why it makes a difference. Child B can not wait until it is time to start college, when they can start thinking for themselves/making their own decisions. As a pastor friend of mine has said "Parents need to insulate their children during the young years. As time goes by the parents need to peel the insulation off of their children so they will be able to function in the "real world."
