  1. I didn't look into streaming because we haven't used that service yet. But blockbuster seemed to have a good selection of titles online....I am going to keep doing searches of the documentaries and such that we plan to use this year and see if they have it all.
  2. How many people have tried Blockbuster and what is your opinion. I am using netflix right now and mostly for homeschool purposes. I just checked out blockbuster and I am thinking that they might be better, I did a little searching around and they seem to have good selection..........anyone want to give their opinion......please :001_smile:
  3. My baby got her permit yesterday, I can't believe it. I want to cry and clap. :hurray::crying:
  4. :grouphug: i totally understand, I also won't go into details but :grouphug: I always tell my kids that we love, we try to understand, and we do what is right not necessarily what feels good or what is easy but what we know in our hearts in right, The lord see's all and he re-compensates.
  5. Loved that link, I feel inspired to build...what else......book shelves I also would love to build the platform bed, but I think the best one of all was the out door bed swing....on cool nights it would be so refreshing.
  6. Absolutely beautiful, I have tears in my eyes right now because I am thinking of my MIL, Thank you so much for posting, I am sorry to hear about your loss but I am so glad that not only did you have a beautiful mother in law, but you knew you had a beautiful mother-in-law, sometimes I forget.
  7. I think in the sense that he is not a Mexican from Mexico, like African Americans are not just called African and then mistaken as being born in Africa. I think most Hispanics want to be identified as born in America hence Americans as opposed to just being called Mexicans and people mistaking them as born in Mexico. Also Hispanic culture is different than mexican culture, It is more Americanized for lack of a better term, and believe it or not some Hispanics have a hard time understanding Spanish spoken in Mexico because "Mexicans speak it faster and with a bit of an accent". Just like english spoken in the south is different than english spoken in the north.
  8. I am a Caucasian woman and my husband is Hispanic (mexican mom, Spaniard dad). We have 6 children and live in south Tucson, which is a prodomenetly Hispanic part of town. I have been with my husband since I was 13. The plus side is I am bi lingual now, his culture is very family oreinted and gender role specific, which I like (I have never been pressured by anyone in his family to get a job, further my education, find a life outside of the home) My role as wife/mom is very respected and honored, not the case with my family. On the other hand the family is not considered just mom, dad, and kids, it includes aunt, uncles, cousins, grandparents etc. Which is good and bad.I have some different views then some of the others and discipline is one of them, everyone feels they are intitiled to correct everyone else kids because we are one family, I have had to be firm about no one disciplining my children other than me and their father. My children always have play dates and access to family members, for good or bad. LOL And during the school year my house is the school bus drop off for some 15 cousins, so plenty of play mates. My in-laws live in our guest house/extra trailer on the property :tongue_smilie: I have to say that we are not always treated well in public by Hispanic people mostly but some white people too. (my experiences, not a racial judgment) We get lots of looks, not sure if it is because we have a large family of because my kids are bi-racial. I forget that my husband and I are different races, I forget that my kids are bi- racial until someone brings it up. I have had family members and continue to have family members on both sides make comments that are racial,(both white and Hispanic) it is hurtful but I don't think they mean what they say in their hearts, I think that they also overlook the fact that we are a bi-racial family. For the most part though it has always been a non issue, besides an aunt or uncle who has their opinions about race mixing (again on both sides) Also from the 15 cousins that congregate here on school days (family member watch family members children while the parents work, just the way it is, no charge, which I am fine with) 5 of them are bi-racial African American/Hispanic....... we look like a day care center and it gets loud, luckily we live on a little over an acre in a semi-rural area, still I wonder what the neighbors think  I don't recommend anything to anyone, you have to follow your heart wherever it leads you, mine lead me to my husband and I would do it all over again and again and again, he is my soul mate and my beat friend. I would never encourage or discourage my children to marry anyone based on race. Marriage is of the heart and soul, the flesh is a consequence of the first two. There have defiantly been bumps in the road but over all it has been a good ride. :) At a home school group I was told once that it was great that my kids were joining because now the other kids could learn how to play with kids of other races.......never went back, my kids will not be their racial tolerance project...just thought I would add that because it does happen.
  9. That is such a good idea....I am going to have to copy you
  10. We also live in a single wide, hoping to make it a double soon....lol.....I was at a home school group meeting once and over heard one of the mothers complaining that they bought a brand new double wide to put on their acreage so they could live in it while their custom home was being built...She was appalled that anyone might find out they were living in a trailer, I was thinking oooooh double wide, how fancy, can't wait to get me one of those. LOL.
  11. I sometimes feel caught between white trash and red neck LOL :D, and to top it off I am married to a hispanic man and my children are bi-racial, so when I go to the store I am looked at and scrutinized often....even worse when I am wearing my hippie skirt, wife beater, flip flops and then remember that dd put flowers in my hair when she was playing in the yard.....lol they weren't staring 'cuz they thought I was beautiful LOL
  12. My mom has never supported my homeschooling, she feels that I am raising unsociable misfits that will never be able to function in a group setting:001_huh:. She lives 22 hrs. from here and see's my kids maybe once a yr. so her "facts" are merely based on "this one home school boy I met while I took some college classes" . I guess he didn't feel the need to socialize with my moms crowd. lol I am guessing that was a good call on his part LOL I love my mom, but she is a very free spirited hippie with interesting friends. I think I said that as nice as I can:tongue_smilie: nothing against hippies, just a word I used to give some kind of description of my mom.
  13. thank you for posting the link to booksshouldbefree........just what i was looking for.
  14. My oldest is 15 and I have a 13 yr. old, they are both starting 10th grade this year and have been home schooled from day 1. When they were 5 or 6 (this is true for all my kids when they get that age) they see the back packs and school buses and they want to go to school. I tell them that's not an option for them and we move on.....now they tell me all the time how happy they are to not be in PS. They have lots of cousins and our house is a block from the bus stop so after school there are about 15 cousins here waiting for there parents to pick them up. They aren't lonely at all. They do tell me that they have a hard time talking to PS kids about anything other than tv programs and such because the kids never know what they are talking about and they prefer to socialize with "older people" ie. adults. They would be completely offended with me if I ever mentioned putting them in PS. As far as homeschooling there own children the 15 and the 13 yr. old said that they will make that decision when they are ready to have children, the 11 yr. old says she will defiantly be homeschooling her children :)
  15. I have 2 starting 10th grade, 1 starting 6th grade, 1 starting 1st grade, and 2 observers :D
  16. Sept. 2 will be Day #1 for us.....we school Thurs..-Mon. and have Tues. Wed. off, due to DH's work schedule. That is assuming he continues to have those days off...if they change.....so will we. That is why we have day #1 day #2 and so on instead of Monday, Tuesday. That way regardless of DHs schedule my schedule still makes since..... Term 1: September - November Term 2: January - March Term 3: April - June. That's the plan anyway :tongue_smilie:
  17. I am adding it to the copywork but also going to assign it as memory work for recitation. Thank you...
  18. I have decided to make the kids copy work myself this year and thought I would use it to give them their daily dose of "food for thought". I have most of the quotes picked out already, but thought I would pick some of your brains before I finish my list. I have used a combination of scripture and famous quotes, So my question is what is you favorite quote or saying, If you had to share a quote or scripture with your child right now what would it be. Anyone want to share :blush5:
  19. That is what we do, the only person who has "special socks" is my DH. He has socks specific to his uniform so his socks are separate from our HUGE sock basket. LOL I also agree with the "who says socks have to match statement" If no one can see them than who care. When they ware shorts or skirts then we get all matchy matchy otherwise just grab two socks and put them on. :) Should I be embarrassed to admit this
  20. That describes my family. The two oldest are starting yr.2 of Japanese which drives the elders in my DH family crazy (they are Hispanic and want all the kids to learn Spanish, the older kids understand Spanish and can speak it conversationally, but not enough to satisfy mil) 3rd. DD wants to learn Italian, it is so close to spanish that it should be fairly easy for her to transition to. The rest will be learning Spanish until they are older and can decide what other language they would like to learn. We speak both english and spanish in our home but I want them to be able to read and write in Spanish before they study another language, something I wish I would have done with the older two.
  21. Oh good, I'm not the only one who has this problem. I have 6 kids and I'm not sure if it is just exhaustion at this point but I have a real hard time conversating, I say one word but meant to say another, I get three words out and then forget what I was going to say, Don't ask me what their names are LOL and birthdays, I have been working on that ever since the doctor asked if I was sure the child was mine,AH yes, I was there I just can't remember for sure when LOL I have some days that are really bad. I write everything down. I am the queen of lists. Maybe it's just because my mind never stops so it never really rest??? I am not sure.
  22. Oh please do, my husband is completely appalled by the chicken idea LOL Strangly when I asked if he thought a fish would be better he said he thought it was less "disgusting" LOL Anyone think a fish would work????
  23. My dd 13 saw this post and was very excited. She is starting her 2nd year of Japanese and thought those magnets were the "Coolest"...I really hope they are sold here in the usa somewhere or can be purchased from the manufacturer. I would love to have the for my oldest 2 DD's.
