  1. 1: a clean kitchen 2: an hour or so with my coffee before anyone else wakes up 3: our morning trip to the park for exercise.....if not the little one have way too much energy and I need to get my blood flowing. 4: having the day planned out
  2. They have very specific interests in certain area's of history and are very knowledgeable about those eras. I am hoping to find something that fills in the gaps. They have studied early world history and then they skipped to the Victorian era (which they love and read about continually) I was hoping to find something that would at least give them an overview of the area's they missed. Like my signature says, I wish I would have found The well trained mind years ago.
  3. I was hoping to use it with my 10th graders. As a way to make sure that they had a least an over view of world history, making sure that we didn't skip anything. I haven't always done history the way I plan to do it now with the younger ones and I wanted something that gave a history over view in a year.
  4. I'm thinking about buying A Little history of the world by E.H. Gombrich. If anyone owns it could you please give me your thoughts on this book as well as what age you feel it would be suited for. Thanks
  5. My DH is a corrections officer for the local sheriff dept. and county Jail. He works in the tower which is a privileged pod, Not because the inmates have privileges but because they only allow certain officers to work that floor. It houses the inmates that due to the nature of their crime, the fact they they assault staff, or because they need to be in protective custody can not be house in general population. He basically makes sure that all their physical needs are met, gets them to any legal or medical apt. they may have etc. all while keeping them from hurting themselves, other inmates, or any staff including himself and the nurses who frequently have to hand out meds. and check on inmates. He as been assaulted 2 times in the last 3 mths. but that is part of his job and an inmate has never got the better of him yet. Thank GOD. He says that the worst part is that he feels like he is surrounded by evil all day. The inmates he deals with the most are ones who have been involved in pretty disturbing crimes.
  6. My husband has an irregular schedule also, What I did was instead of having Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday , I have is day 1, day 2, day 3, day 4, and day 5. Then regardless of DH's days off we still have 5 days of school scheduled every week. I then have the issue of irregular hours so we have just set it up that when DH walks out the door for work, we pull out the books for school. So no matter when DH works we have school 5 days a week for 5 hrs. a day. Right now we have Tuesday, Wednesday's off and do school between 2:30 and 7:30 pm.
  7. My oldest wanted to be a woman when she was little, an attainable goal ;) DD 2 wanted to be a duck:001_huh:. The rest had pretty reasonable goals but my niece wanted to be bread
  8. This too shall pass, everything is temporary slow down and enjoy the process instead of just struggling to get to the goal
  9. this is an issue I have been dealing with for years with my in-laws. I have had them come over to have coffee and sit through one of our lessons while giving the kids their opinion on the subject (FIL) or ask to borrow something, or I just wanted to see how you are doing, or can you watch the kids for a few min. etc. This year I have decided to make a nice little door hanger out of wood and paint it...then write School is in session, please come back later. The phone one is easy.....just don't answer the phone. I think the worst part is when everyone thinks because you are home you must have nothing to do so therefore could you give them a ride, pick up there kids, do them a favor. :glare::glare: oh and my answering machine use to say....."Hello you have reached the Jaure family, we are doing school right now, we usually finish around 4 o'clock so if you leave a message I will try to call you back after 4. Thank you"
  10. something similar happened to me a few weeks ago. I went online to reserve some books and saw a fine for not returning FLL and the well trained mind. I called and she said they didn't have them. I told here look I remember returning those books and here is why, I had them so full of sticky notes, that it took me forever to transfer all my little notes to a note book and remove all the stickies. I have since bought my own copies. She finally decided maybe I was telling the truth and went to check the shelves and sure enough there they were.
  11. :grouphug: Having two toddlers is hard, hard, hard. I think back to when my oldest two were little and it's a wonder I didn't lose my mind. I have two toddlers right now but fortunately I have older Daughters who help me out a lot. It is still hard work though. This time will pass it gets easier......believe me. oh and :grouphug: again.
  12. :iagree: she "roots" for the team that she relates to the most. I have nephews and nieces who are African American, my kids are Hispanic and I am white. All of the kids have done the same thing when they were younger. They have even split there teams up by color while playing in the yard. We as adults just intervened and reminded them that they are all the same, related by blood in fact and that skin color is just a trait like hair color or eye color. Most of them are teenagers now and they don't have those issues anymore.
  13. DD1 we call Lyssia, audie and french fry her name is Alyssa DD2 we call dovie, and Deen her name is Davina DD3 we call hosie, jonnie, and hosibell her name is Joann DD4 we call bell, monkey, bella her name is Isabell DD5 we call baby girl, baylie bird, or just baily her name is Hailiey DS we call rex, rexy, seddie, buddy, boy, rooster, his name is Seth DH calls me tray, My name is Tracy I call DH babe, his friends call him Izzy his name is israel. it is amazing that my kids know who we are talking too. My husband has nick names for all of our neices and nephews too. He is a very involved uncle and the only male role model for a lot of them so I think the nick names makes them feel more like they are part of our household/family.
  14. It is very common amongst Hispanic people. When my children were little we called them mama's. It is just like if you called your DD sweetheart of cupcake or what ever little love name you have for your baby girl.
  15. I will definitely pay the $10 to have it get here faster and hope that they have everything I order in stock.
  16. Technically we do because I pay my dues and have attended a few events, we also can get cheaper tickets to different theatrical events, but we do not attend park day anymore, as much as we tried to make friends and fit in it just didn't work, everyone already had their "clicks" and they weren't very welcoming to new comers. As much as I wish my kids had more social activities I can't see taking them to a group that is so closed off to new comers. I am on the hunt for family activities that we can do with other families so that the kids can get out with friends regularly...so far no luck. Also the home school group is almost an hour drive. :auto:
  17. thanks, I might have to push my start date back a week or so.......
  18. How long is it taking for everyones orders to arrive??? I need to place an order this friday and possibly one on the 3 of September.....The order for this friday is for things that are crucial for this school year to start and the order on the third is for less important niceties. I wanted to start school on September 9......what are the chances :D Cutting it close I know.
  19. My dd 11 is really skinny and very active, all she ever thinks about is food and she can eat as much as dh. When she gets allowance she buys junk food, (chips, soda, candy etc. ) She usually shares with her siblings. She says she earned her treats and I agree. Her Dad has a ravenous sweet tooth, he has to have something sweet after a meal and he a very athletic man. I don't know maybe some people just really enjoy there treats like others really enjoy a good book. ???
  20. Thats my dream kitchen, I always tell DH if we ever build a house I want a kitchen that I can just spray down with a high pressure hose and the water would go out a drain in the middle of the floor.......bathroom to match the kitchen...perfect.
