  1. Look up dual enrollment in your state. It's possible you could dual enroll in the charter school and do homeschool. Your kids could attend fine arts and P.E. classes at the school and you could teach the core subjects at home. Also, many "online school" alternatives are cropping up that work with charter schools to provide distance learning programs. For example, the school receives funding for your student, they may in turn offer modest reimbursements for curriculum and expenses that you obtain to homeschool which you may be able to use for gymnastics or music lessons.
  2. This is available to purchase today. Has anyone gotten the discount from signing up for the newsletter yet?
  3. Put the tiles on a dry-erase board, open the book and start. It's pretty easy. We usually do one "step" or lesson per week. There's not much to say. It's open and go. As with anything else, the only secret to success is probably consistency.
  4. I'd love to share mine, but I can never get it cleaned up enough to take a picture!
  5. We just started level D and my DD7 is doing pretty good with math. I'll probably buy the add on kit for next year since these never seem to be on sale. I also just started DS5 on level B.
  6. This is what the Secrets of Droon series did for my DD, but she is a bit younger. Not great literature, but got her super excited about reading EVERY DAY. They are short, easy chapter books, 2nd to 3rd grade reading level. But she read them ALL.
  7. We are on Level 4 Lesson 12 right now. I think it's still working well for us. I've liked the way it has progressed so far even if this book doesn't appear to be as meaty. It still seems like things that should be covered. We also use it now to practice cursive which is easier for DD to do in spelling than in other more demanding subjects with writing. I've already bought the rest of the books through Level 7 so I sure hope not to become disappointed with it. I don't really know of another program that's better. The only downside I see to it is the cost. I just wanted to give some positive feedback for it.
  8. We have a few of these. I would love to get more at a good price, but I would prefer for my DD to read them.
  9. I have given her paper certificates for a few curriculum books. When she finished RSM B, her first year of math, I gave her a certificate and a a wallet with some "seed" change in it. When she finished OPTGR, I gave her the full set of MTH series. I tried to give her something useful and related to what she had accomplished, something that would continue to motivate not just be an end reward. Now that's she's in 3rd grade, it will probably be paper certificates for the heavy curriculum subjects.
  10. My DD7 really wants to read The Boy's King Arthur as it was referenced in the book, Half Magic which we are doing as a RA, and also because she has been connecting the dots and piecing together other references from MTH and some other books. But this book and others like it, I think are too far above her reading level which is roughly 3rd to 4th grade. She can read beginner chapter books such as Flat Stanley, Merlin Mission and Secrets of Droon pretty easily, but she hasn't read much beyond this level. I'm trying to advise her to wait about a year but of course, the interest is there now. I appeased her with Young Arthur, a picture book, but she still wants the "full story". I don't want her to get discouraged in reading if the book is too hard/long for her so I'm trying to pace her. Can anyone recommend books about King Arthur that would be at about a 3rd grade reading level and really worthwhile. There's so many out there.
  11. This looks great. I wish it didn't require Flash so I could do it on the iPad. There's even worksheets!
  12. Great deal as they are prett pricey. I'm already subscribed now. I wonder if there's a way to transfer over.
  13. We try to start by 8:00am and finish before lunch. This is mostly for my 3rd grader. The K'er only takes about and hour or so right now that we just started. We do five days a week, but there are some days, maybe once or twice a week that we will do something in the afternoon or weekend. This is usually a science lab or history project. I try not to take breaks, usually only one around 10:00 or 10:30 for a light snack to break up the morning, but re-focusing my DD7 is too hard if there are breaks and interruptions. Breaks with physical activity that I often see recommended for ADHD kids are NOT effective for my DD. ??? I usually have a hard time fitting in things like Art in this schedule though, but I'm going to try to work it in on Fridays this year which should be a shorter day for core subjects. When I go all day or into the afternoon a lot, I quickly get burned out.
  14. Huh. Apparently, that's the company our charter school is using too because they're listed on their website. However, the school didn't mention them or the rest of the resources that might be available! Sorry, I know I'm not providing any helpful information here. Just kind of puzzled.
  15. Wow, that really is a sweet deal. We're getting some reimbursement from the charter school this year, but it's nothing compared to this! What state are you in?
  16. Yes, I think it might be a big leap. Not sure she's there yet, but I don't want to discourage her either. I've already done that with some YA books she wanted to read. She always visits the shelf with the Secrets of Droon books in case some more will magically appear, I guess. We'll see if she sticks with this one.
  17. We started this Monday. DD turns five in September. We're doing the stuff in the sig. Later, we will also do Draw Write Now if time allows once a week. We may add Songschool Spanish and maybe Lolliepop Logic if he wants to do more later on.
  18. My DD7 picked this up at the library. It's longer than the beginner chapter books she's been reading (Merlin Mission, Secrets of Droon). I only read the blurb on the inside cover and it just seemed like a modern version of the Jungle Book. Has anyone or anyone's kids read this?

  20. How come my Sent Mail folder shows no messages even after I send a private message out?
  21. My DD7 got way into the Secrets of Droon series this summer. She read all forty something books. They are sci-fi fantasy.
