  1. We made a prehistory timeline using colored cardstock paper for each time period like this one. I printed lots of pictures for my DD to cut up and paste collage style on each sheet. Then I helped her come up with a real short and simple snippet to write on lined paper. We hung them up the wall. We also watched the Walking With Dinosaurs series as it pertained to the area we were covering and did little projects occasionally. I plan to do this with my K'er too but may wait a few more months with him to be more "ready". He asks me a lot of questions about this so I know he'll enjoy it.(Can't find the time line photo right now. And my enter key isn't working???).. 2. We use the same curriculum with my DD8 3rd grade w/ADHD. I don't think changing the curriculum is the answer long term. She does get bored of the repetitive routine sometimes, but doesn't complain that much. I know it helps her attitude a lot when we mix things up or start with a "fun" activity like art, music, or creative logic activity. Timez Attack for multiplication (it has arithmetic too, I think) is an online game he might like instead of RSM card games. Don't approach it as work or as a "have to" activity, just do it and don't spend time talking about why he doesn't want to do it. Let him pick what subject to do next. Offer incentives for getting work done with a positive attitude even if the work itself is not great. Reward the attitude. Emphasize the importance of having a good attitude about learning over doing well if he's having a hard time with certain subjects. This at least helps my DD when she's feeling like she doesn't have a say. Hope you find something of help.
  3. Have you seen the news? My DS5 made this last month. (It was not part of homeschooling). M Weather by LolaT, on Flickr My DD8 made this the same day. S Weather by LolaT, on Flickr
  4. Thank you so much for these suggestions. I also put the book on hold at the library. It would help me to inderstand better how dislexia works. I do realize he's young enough to grow out of these difficulties but we are getting to a point in his readingmwhere I'm starting to think it may be more than that and I guess I need to know if it is so I can proceed the right way.
  5. We stick to the rules but on menta problems, I have at times, just verbally walked her through the mental process. I think that's better than writing it down, because we're still doing mental math, I just help, her hold all the pieces in her mind by walking her through it.
  6. My concern is mostly based on the difficulties he shows which my DD8 did not at that age with the same reading program. He's been doing reading for about a year starting with an online preschool program and now in OPGTR around lesson 80. He still has to sound out each letter of a CVC word, often forgets simple sight words, takes wild guesses at words longer than CVC, always switches up B and D. I think he is not moving into a more automatic reading of the words he is now familiar with because he can only read them correctly if he makes the effort to correctly recognize each individual letter and its sound. When he does start to go a bit more fluently, there are more mistakes. He has also at times, written from right to left, written letters backwards and even upside down AND mirror image. He also reverses written numbers often despite having a manuscript desk strip for reference. My DH did have a reading disability but it was never defined beyond that.
  7. I'm noticing a lot of reversals with my DS5 as he is learning to read. He is still in the beginning stages of reading. I'm wondering when it would be prudent to stop waiting for those issues to resolve themselves and maybe have him evaluated for dislexia.
  8. ... a speech issue which causes a person to produce a semantic reversal of the word they are trying to say?

  10. I found this very annoying the first time around too, but we went through the whole book and it was very successful. I'm using it again for my DS5 and we're a few lessons ahead of you. That lessons bugged me again, but this issue really doesn't appear too many times in the book. I think you used the right approach on it. English is my second language too and I didn't learn it by any method so this was all new to me too. After completing OPGTR with one child, though, I can say I have full confidence in it.
  11. We've used Levels B, C, and are half way through D. I'm pretty happy with it. My DD really likes it even when she's gone through some rough patches. She has tested a bit above average for her grade so I think it's been a success all around. I have noticed some people prefer curriculum that is less teacher intensive and more independent like MM or SM, but I think it should be taught and the teacher manual is open and go so it's really easy.
  12. We're on Lesson 69 in RSM Level D. My DD's times vary widely on this multiplication drill sheets. I'm wondering what is a reasonable time and what is a good time for Quick Practice-5.
  13. How do you make sure they are actually doing what they are supposed to during this time? My DD8 requires a lot of my attention. I'm still trying to figure out how to get more of my things done while she gets started with school. Thanks.
  14. Thank you. I just bouht one of these books. Hopefully I can find the other in the library.
  15. Yes I know but they are also designed to work together. I think it's kind of stupid to use the exact same passage for the exact same kind of exercise. It's a wasted lesson.
  16. Why would they repeat a narration exercise in FLL3 L25 from WWE3 W7 D3?
  17. I'm in a similar situation, DS5 waiting around for DD8 that still requires more of my time. I'm still looking for more activities he can and wants to do on his own, but so far, I've added these online activities: BrainPop Jr Salsa Videos Starfall Also Lollipop logic Draw Write Now Do-a-dot paints Kiwi Crates (mail subscription art/craft/science kits. Get $10 off with this link)
  18. That is awesome! So cute. Does your DS6 do well with WWE2?
  19. So is the beta version a reduced price of $50?
  20. So does that mean you started it with her when she was two?
  21. I ordered it for my K'er and 3rd grader to kind of do together. We haven't received it yet but started with the free downloadable chapters. My DD7 did SSL and is still finishing it. I got SSS because it was about the only thing they could do together and I thought that would be fun for them. I also have them watch Salsa videos and do RS occasionally.
  22. I've started doing Kiwi Crates for my K'er and he really loves it. I've been pretty happy with the quality of the materials.
