  1. balances on our credit cards. I think that is neat that you have a card that gives perks towards your 529K. I thought it would be a good idea to do that but I always forget to do it. I use my debit card for everything and watch what I spend through my online banking, and for us personally, since I switched to using my debit card only we have spent alot less than when I was using my credit card and paying off balance each month. It must be a "mental" thing for me, but just taking directly out of my checking I do indeed spend less...thus I'm not using my credit card.
  2. This was my advice too! I feel for her, I was a size 0 and wore long length in everything, it was hard to find clothes. My oldest is 10 wears a size 12L and slim and we have had best success at Old Navy. Melissel is correct about they always seem to have the long/skinny stuff on clearance. I walked out last week with brand new 12L and slim pants for dd and they were on clearance down to $4.99 a pair.
  3. :D LOL, tha is priceless...remember to write that down in a memory book :D
  4. for me, if there is one thing I MUST improve in my life it is exercise. I don't think moving a laptop around is exercise is it??? I have managed to get my diet improved but now I must start exercising again. To you ladies who are exercising regularly and homeschooling, I am in awe of you :D
  5. Yahoo group devoted totally to RS4Kids and it is very helpful. We bought the whole set at the homeschool convention this summer, but haven't implemented it yet, we meant to but dh health problems have put much of our homeschooling on hold. DH is the one who bought it, he really likes it, although he was a math major, he minored in chemistry and thinks it is a very educational/fun program. I've heard so many raves about it, I hope it works as well as I hope it does. (of course nothing works if you just leave it on a bookshelf like I've done:rolleyes: ) Maybe the yahoo group can help inform you about all the questions you might have. Here is a link to it: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/RealScience4Kids/
  6. We have been doing Singapore about 2 years now, we switched after doing Saxon 1 & 2. My dd literally hated math at the end and she is very smart but had trouble with grasping the concepts. We started Singapore, but did go back to 1A Singapore, working fairly quickly through it and 1 B then slower through 2A hit a normal pace at 2B. She LOVES LOVES math now. She is temporarily in public school 4th grade and has been for 9 weeks....she is sooooooooooooooooooooo far ahead of her class, even the GT kids. Her last report card was 99 in Math. We really like Singapore here alot. DD yesterday commented that her teacher at school was trying to explain long division to the class and no one was "getting it" the way she explained it. Teacher asked her if she knew how and she was like "yes, we were doing that a year ago.." Her teacher told me that she is amazed at the way my dd can work the word problems in her head, she said she gave them a page of word problems and all dd did was write the answer down, and so she asked her how she did it, and dd told her that these were so much easier than the Singapore word problems she could just figure them out in her head. I'm only telling this story to let you know that in my own kids case, Singapore made a math phobic child love math and also helped her so much with her logic skills in word problems. It is a good, solid program. HTH :)
  7. In total agreement with this! consumer labs is so well worth the membership price, I have learned brands I thought excellent weren't, and some I thought would be okay were very good. And even within brand names, certain products can be very good and others almost dangerous (high cadium or lead levels).
  8. :D what a hoot! that is how I feel about my cup of coffee too! :D The books sounds interesting, I could use a little (actually alot) more energy to keep up with my kids.
  9. :D You guys crack me up... and this is why I love this board :)
  10. three years with my identity "possibly" being in trouble. One was when my bank was hacked into a year ago and the other when another well known retailer sent me a letter my identity (credit info) had been hacked. I did contact the credit bureaus and had "hold" on my accounts..something like 6 months no new credit could be issued without notifying me. I do use the free credit checking and check one of the bureaus every 4 months, then the next four months the other. So far nothing has happened. It was a coincidence during this time I started receiving collection calls from several agencies and one bank that there was a problem with my credit...well it was NOT my credit, it was a crook with same name as me who lives 2 blocks from me...how unfortunate is that. I have a common name..practically Joe Smith common, so it was assumed I was her, which i wasn't. Finally she landed in jail and the calls stopped. These events with this woman had nothing to do with my credit supposedly being "hacked" but being as it all happened together I was panicky. I understand your nervouseness, but if you contact the Credit Bureaus' and notify of a problem, you watch your accounts, you change your cell number you really should be fine. It is just one more hassle I know. I imagine you are fine, I would give American Express another call and see if you can make sure there are no accounts tied to your social security number and if nothing, you should be just fine. :o
  11. I tried varying it, etc... In the end, we switched to Singapore and she LOVES math. My "I hate, hate, hate math" child loves math because of Singapore. We also added in some MUS and she enjoys that too, but Singapore is our main math program. If you really want to stay with Saxon, try having her do a few problems on each page and skip pages until you find where you are challenging her and slow down. Saxon is a terrific program, but it certainly works best with certain personalities. I personally loved it, but I wasn't the one who needed to learn the math. Singapore is a good solid choice, as well as MUS.
  12. I'm happy you finally got some rest, sleep deprivation doesn't make any of us very nice :( I have found melatonin to be very helpful with falling asleep, you can get it anywhere the sell vitamins/herbs. Take care of yourself young lady, and that is an order! (see you have to do it because someone older than you said so! ;)
  13. and may it be all sunshine for your future!:):):)
  14. if it is at the local homeschool store. I have bought used several times on EBAY and gotten burned a couple of times. The only time I have been burned on EBAY is for homeschool things and I buy on ebay alot. I once tried to buy here on the boards and wow, I ran into a doozy of a liar. ( I finally ran a google search of her name and found thread after thread on other boards where she had taken peoples money and never sent item) .Thankfully paypal resolved that one for me and I got my money back. So basically I buy new, I love homeschool conventions where I don't have to pay for shipping.
  15. If I were you, I would try Melatonin for her. It comes in multiple dosages, but 1mg should be fine to start with. My daughters pediatrician as well as her pediatric neurologist have told me it is safe for my daughter. 1 mg makes my daughter who could never sleep, sleep well through the night without feeling any drowsiness in morning. I know the dosage for children can go as high as 10mg, but I wouldn't do that unless a doctor told me to. 1 mg makes me sleep through the night too!
  16. for the right pillow for a few years I share your frustration!:( When I do find one I like, it eventually flattens out to a pancake in 6 months. I fluff them throughly before going to bed, but they don't seem to last. I have bought some very expensive ones that have not held up, and a couple of inexpensive ones that have. I have finally resorted to Overstock dot com and reading the reviews of the pillows to find one.
  17. out in 2000 and she was 85. It went very smoothly and her recovery time was very short. She was old, frail and had alzheimers and it still went well. A girlfriend of mine had hers done a few years back, hers was much more involved for other medical issues, and her recovery time was a couple of weeks. I hope yours goes very smoothly with a quick recovery! (PS..both my mother and my friend felt so much better after they had the surgery)
  18. said you had to look it up. I did too! I googled it because I had no idea... I love the old Star Treks, but we watch very little TV, and what I do watch is usually PBS... At least I'm not the only one who didn't know! It is pretty funny what her husband said now that I know he was really talking about Captain Kirk..:D
  19. my daughters both would find that soooo awesome, no way would they want to bury it. My oldest would want to do something weird, like put it back together with glue and then paint it with glow in the dark paint to freak her little sister out..LOL
  20. the series make sense. After that, my dd has been reading them in no particular order and she is enjoying them.
  21. I love this idea! I think I will add this to my list of "goodies" that I keep. As for my own girls, when they dawdle and don't do, they get a mark on the board, so many marks earns you an extra chore. They also loose tv priviliges for the day if they fail to get something done when they have been reminded to do it. My kids get very limited tv during the week, so they consider tv time pretty precious.
  22. and she is only one block from the house! She and the other doctor partner keep a busy practice, but they are so thorough and careful. My youngest has special needs due to stroke/seizures and this Dr. has been so wonderful at figuring out many things. She sees patients until 21, and I always see older teenagers in the office to see the Docs. I doubt I've seen a 21 year old though...LOL Another thing they do that I like, 2 very seperate waiting rooms..one for sick and one for not sick kids.
  23. I dropped youngest dd off at school and lots of the kids were wearing shorts, LOL Not mine, I had her in pants, but it was warm and sticky here this morning, definitely short sleeve weather.
  24. Linda, I too apologize for doubting your story, I really thought it might be true, but after things in the past on the boards...well, it made me wonder. I am very thankful you guys called the police, alerted the neighbors, and first and foremost, I'm thankful you guys are all safe!
