  1. I was only thinking of as a supplement, definitely I"m not planning on using it alone. I was curious about it, maybe it would be a good summer program to keep her brain going. thanks.
  2. I keep seeing people here that mention ALEKS for math, so I did a google search. It looks very interesting. To those of you who have used it, what are your thoughts? I'm considering it for my dd who is 10..currently doing Singapore and some MUS. Pros? Cons? Opinions?
  3. tooooooooooooo funny....I actually read that the same way and thought 5 kids under 2! I'm glad to see I'm not the only one whose brain plays tricks on them.;)
  4. I simply can not believe how many of you kindly took the time to answer these questions. Dear daughter is so amazed and just devouring all this information, and seeing all the wide responses has been really eye opening. I'm just so thankful for all you guys and this wonderful forum!:D
  5. Janet in Wa, JailWarden, StaceyMass, Bee.. thank you all for you answers. I am going to print them all off so she can sit and read them and really think about all of your points. She got to read only one before she went to bed, she was so excited to have one answer, she will be thrilled to pieces when she sees there were quite a few. This gives her alot of insight .... I appreciate it, and she truly appreciates it! Thanks so much kind ladies!:001_smile:
  6. Thank you Regina...wow, two excellent replies... this is really helpful to give her an overview of the jury system. I am so appreciative! :):):)
  7. :grouphug: Rachel, you are a sweetheart and your answers are wonderful!!! thanks bunches! (dd wants to be a lawyer, so this is great) :001_smile:
  8. had this happen to her three years ago. She was 40 when she found out she had a sister who was 45 (her father had an affair with a woman before he married my friends mom). They finally met a couple of years ago and are glad they did, they were both terribly nervous to meet each other. My friend was hesitant at first, but said it has been good to meet her 1/2 sister. They live on other sides of the country and have each flown to each others home to meet their families, but other than that, they email now and then, call a few times a year, and that is about it. It did not profoundly change her life meeting her sister, she is glad she met her but she says it feels more like meeting a distant cousin....you know you are related but no real "strong" connection but still there is some connection. You have no moral obligation, but it would be kind if you feel comfortable with it.
  9. My dd is looking to ask someone a few questions about jury duty. I never get called, and my dh has never been picked. My relatives have been called and never picked either. My neighbors are old and can't remember what happened when they served years ago.... So if some kind hearted person on the list would answer these questions if you have served on a jury duty, one 10 year old would appreciate it. Very short answers, no more than a couple of sentences. She is to find a responsible adult to ask these of if her parents, grandparents have not served ... Any responsible adults who want to answer? Many thanks! Here goes: 1) What did you think when you first received the jury notification? 2) Were you questioned to serve on a jury? If so, what were some of the questions you were asked? 3) Did you serve on a jury? If so, what was your experience like? 4) Did your experience influence how you feel about the jury system? Why or why not? 5) What role do you think the jury system plays in the American judicial process?
  10. Oh my...no no no, I was not referring to your post or anyones, I didn't read all the posts, I just meant a thought in general. Besides as I said, after reading the posters post, I was just seeing red. I truly was not referring to your post, I don't know that I even read it. Sorry if my ramblings seemed pointed.
  11. I never leave my kids in the car and it drives them crazy sometimes. I mean if the weather is horid they hate being drug out for a few minutes to go inside here or there, but that is life, they are safer with me than in the car.
  12. that given the mother has lied and the big sister has lied, I wouldn't let either one of my girls play with her. This is not a case of simply wanting to play with one child and not the other, this is a carefully orchestrated plot to hurt M's feelings. I simply would not let either girl go play with the girl next door, they need to be taught clickish behaviour is wrong. And to those that think I don't think kids should play seperately would be wrong, I do let me girls go to seperate friends houses and they aren't a package deal, but if a neighbor was mistreating (LYING) to one of my girls, neither would be playing with her! I feel so bad for M....I'm probably not making sense because I'm angry at how your daughter is being treated! And I totally agree with what 3LilRedHens said.
  13. I am so glad you posted it, although it does turn my stomach! DH has MS and takes some immune suppressive IV medications...he has to be careful. He always gets lemons...I'm guessing he will change his mind after I show him this. For people like me who have normal immune systems, well, it is still gross but for people with impaired immune systems this is truly dangerous! thanks for the heads up!
  14. United Streaming the first time it was offered through the Homeschool Buyers coop. I have watched it less than a dozen times, yet friends of mine use it daily. I simply can't figure out how to use it daily! I hate tv so much may be part of the problem.. I won't renew it, I feel rather foolish to spent well over $100 for something I so seldom use.
  15. at two of the local libraries I go to. One is next to a huge middle school and the library is really not a fun (or safe) place to be after the school lets out. The other City library is better funded and run better, however, they are having a real problem with parents leaving their children there unattended. They have a sign that any children still there at closing by themselves, the police have to be called...and they do have to call fairly often, kids left there with no parents (even young kids!) I guess these parents forgot how to parent. :(
  16. My mother and uncle were both like this, more petite compared to their parents and siblings who were very tall. My mother was born in 1919 and her brother in 1921. They were both small and my aunt tells me they put the teacups on their heads as babies. My mother married at 20 and weighed 80 pounds and was four foot ten inches. She gave birth to my brother when she was 29 and she weighed 95 pounds pregnant and my brother was 8.5 pounds at birth (and it was a natural birth). My mother was always healthy though she is now deceased, she lived to 83. My uncle is still alive, at 5 foot and 90 pounds. I guess I"m saying although small, they were always healthy. All their children are normal height, I'm taller than the rest at 5'7". Now my sister has had a duaghter who is like my mom, very small and continues to be small. She wears a size 4/5 and is 9 years...pediatrician says she is perfectly healthy. I can't wonder if it is genetic, he says no. Just my story..sorry to go off topic.
  17. are allowed to throw them out? I keep mine in a bag and throw them out every few months, but being an optimist, I have kept some around a few years thinking their mate will show up
  18. We have 2 different pediatricians at 2 different offices and both could care less if I homeschool or not. Maybe because in Texas homeschooling is everywhere, but I have never had any problems with either doctors (seperate clinics and they both have several doctors in practice) about homeschooling or my choice in seperating vaccinations, taking longer to do them, etc.
  19. no idea about the strike. I like to buy on EBAY but have never sold on it. I can certainly feel for the sellers with the new feedback rules, which are stupid because many times new buyers are really stupid (comments such as I didn't know shipping would be that much, even though shipping cost was stated on the listing; I didnt know item was used, even though item said USED). Of course most buyers are fine, but some are crooks and to not allow the sellers to rate buyers seems unfair to me and I'm only a buyer myself. Not planning on boycotting though!
  20. then we went to Easy Grammar 3/4 and Daily Grams. Then FLL3 came out and we reviewed over and did alot of it. If it had been out when did first was ready for it we would have stuck with FLL, I like everything about FLL.
  21. my laundry habits dramatically and it is working. Now I'm sure you purist will scream in horror, but I'm talking my sanity here: Here goes: I wash one or two loads a day. I wash each childs clothes seperately..in other words Child number #1 all her clothes go in the laundry together, I only seperate white and darks. All colors go in with the darks. I'm much more careful with DH things than the kids, besides my girls basically wear all pink and purple anyway. I have found it so much easier to just toss in all my youngest ones clothes into one load. that kid goes through a million clothes a week and I just wash them all together. I used to have the sorter going, and washing all the darks together, putting all the whites on the sanitary cycle so they were super white, and all the colors together...but it took me hours longer a week. Now I pop a load in daily and no laundry piles... Everyone and I mean everyone better use their assigned bath towel...each one of us has a certain color towel for after the shower. As for hand towels, I went to Sams and bought a huge package of white handtowels, I change them daily in all baths and wash those guys together on sanitary...seems to cut down on colds etc changing them very frequently.
  22. alarming article. Rough Collie, your post was excellent! I think that we have definitely become a country full of people who can not discern a need versus a want. It all seems about instant gratification, don't worry about it, buy it, pay for it next year, etc. :( We have very little debt, the one exception being stupid stupid stupid me co-signing for a nephews school loan, which he won't repay, so I am repaying because we have excellent credit and I don't want his negligence to mess with my credit. We have no credit card bills or car payments, but still I find it hard to save like we should. I need to check into this Dave Ramsey thing, I've never heard him talk or read his books but you guys all rave about him...there must be something to it.
