  1. Yes! We planned ahead because we went in Sept last year. We sat through a timeshare thing at the Powhatan and got a free two night stay, so we are using that this year. The dates are posted but you can't buy tickets until the end of June or beginning of July, I was told. Jamestown, however, is ready to go, so we bought our tickets and registered for our programs. They filled up quickly last year, apparently.
  2. We are! We'll be there and at Jamestown the 9-11th. Anyone else?
  3. Math- dreambox, ixl, Alecs (is that what it's called?) Grammar- FLL with kids writing on paper Writing- WWE in a notebook, totally doable Spelling- use my favorite program as a guide and use spelling city.com and a notebook Lit and history- guides on the ereader, writing in notebook Science- id probably look for a LOT of outside activities I think math would be the biggest hurdle, and I would definitely make sure my kids were doing a lot of pencil and paper writing. I'd be very careful about how much screen time my kids were getting, so I'd probably look for teacher's guides I could put on the kindle, with hands on activities or things that could be done in a notebook.
  4. Plan ahead, don't forget about it, and you'll be fine. It's a project my girls will remember for the rest of their lives! Also, we finished right at Halloween, so the girls built a tomb for it and showed it off to all the trick or treaters. It was great.
  5. Is she used to doing WWE type narrations? I have my kids narrate back to me what they read. You could have her right that down. Although, if she's not a very confident writer, I'd caution you on having her write every time she reads. You don't want to kill her reading. Another fun idea would be to have an interactive journal, where she writes about anything she finds interesting and then you write back to her. You could ask each other questions, make connections or predictions, etc. I've done these in school before and they can be fun as long as it stays light.
  6. I did two kids before I realized my other twin was too advanced for AAS. They both needed their own box I just couldn't keep things straight without it. I like that I can just open and go with AAS and I didn't want to lose that. I leave the tiles set up all the time. We don't arrange them every day.
  7. Has anyone used her books? I was thinking the math and science books might be helpful because I could see where we were headed and use the science as a spine. What are your experiences with her books? Worth the money? Helpful? Accurate? Thanks!
  8. If we went on antibiotics every time one of us got bit, we'd be on them all the time. As long as you got them quickly, you should be fine.
  9. Thanks so much everyone! This gives me much more confidence to just start calling and asking! Unfortunately our house is too small and too far out of the way for most people.
  10. I know a lot of troops meet at a church. Does that mean one of the leaders is a member of that church? I'm trying to form a new troop and we need a meeting place. Can I just call a church and ask? Help, please! :)
  11. I am looking for a set of books that will help me teach my girls to read music and play the piano (not play by ear). I play at a basic level...it's been a while...but I read music well. I'm looking for something easy to use, open and go, sequential and logical. I'd love to have books to play from plus some sort of workbook for theory (coloring or labeling notes, etc). My girls are almost 10 but they still love all the cutesy stuff, so I'm not worried about them being too old for something. Thanks!
  12. Ahhh that makes sense. Odd that Pearson doesn't clarify that or offer examples of the curriculum through that homeschool page- at least, none that I can see. It's poorly designed, IMO. Thanks!
  13. I just saw this on the Pearson Homeschool site for 5th grade. Has anyone used this?? I'm wondering if it would be a good addition for next year.
  14. They just added 4th grade a few months ago, with plans to add fifth. I think it's great, even if it's a bit of review. My girls think it's really fun and it covers a wide range of concepts. We like it and we'll continue to use it until at least Christmas, unless they add 5th. It makes a great summer supplement, if nothing else!
  15. Nope! There isn't anything in there but answers, so just buy the answer keys. They are much smaller and cheaper.
  16. FWIW, every reading conference I've attended talks about the ability to summarize as the most critical factor for successful reading and comprehension. So, it is extremely important. However (!), WWE 3 has very challenging passages. It could just be that it's a bit too hard for your dd. I see WWE as more of the modeling component to summarizing, so I expect a lower level of independence/success than I do when they summarize their own reading. But the skills they take away from WWE are priceless, IMO- although, it did take me a while to get there. My dd is almost 10 and she'll still be in WWE 3 in the fall, while my other twin will move on to WWS. All kids are different, so slow down, give help, or take a break if needed! I'm much less stressed about this program after hearing SWB talk.
  17. This is exactly what I needed to hear today! Thank goodness, because my girls LOVE SOTW!
  18. Would you mind looking at my 5th grade plan and let me know if I am missing anything? Do you have any recommendations? Grammar- FLL 4 Writing- WWE 4 (dd1), WWS (dd2) Reading- WTM style Spelling- AAS (finish with dd1), Megawords (dd2) Math- CLE 500s, Hands on Equations (to be started over the summer), Dreambox Typing- continue with TTL4 History- SOTW 3, supplemental reading, lots of field trips (anything I am missing here???) Science- outsourced- I gave up Latin- Latin Prep 1 *I am not certain I need a separate vocab program between all the reading my girls do, SWB's vocab rich resources, and Megawords. Thoughts? Thanks in advance!
  19. Uhhhh, I don't know what kind of fancy dishwashers you all have, but I always rinse. It's not like I have a garbage disposal in there! I was at a friend's house and I noticed she didn't rinse, then I looked in her dishwasher and there was food caked all around the door. It was so gross. My mom has one of the really expensive, low water usage dishwashers and you don't have to rinse. But, she hates how long it takes.
  20. This is a favorite here. Popcorn is an evening staple for me- from the air popper with a little butter and sea salt.
  21. Yes! This was VERY common in the state we moved from. We live in a more relaxed, rural area and I haven't seen it here...yet.
