  1. In order to maintain "herd immunity", the community as a whole must maintain a certain percentage of vaccinated individuals. As anti-vax fear-mongering spreads, we'll see diseases killing children that we've not had to contend with for 40-50 years because of good vaccination programs. Yes. There are risks to vaccines. Don't you think those risks were weighed against the benefits of not being killed/crippled by polio, smallpox, pertussis or measles? There was a measles outbreak in California two years ago which was directly the result of unvaccinated children.
  2. No, sometimes the family of the deceased does blame the spouse. Tumultuous relationships as viewed by the family can be a point of contention. My MIL and I are about as close to hating each other as you can possibly get. While I don't actually hate her, I intensely dislike her and think she's a crazy *****. She pretty well feels the same about me. If my depressed husband, who's been unsuccessful twice now, were to have a successful suicide attempt, she would blame me in a NY minute. Never mind the fact that I work my butt off making sure he stays on his medication regimen and do my ****edest to keep external stimuli as low key as possible. His first suicide attempt would have been successful if I hadn't broken in to his apartment. (We were separated. I stopped by to check on him.)
  3. Or Humira. We had a patient allergic to Remicade that we trialed on Humira in the hospital so that we could take care of her if she went into anaphylaxis. I read the package inserts (boredom at 2am when everyone is sleeping...) and it is dosed every 2 weeks. From what our GI doctor told us (the nursing staff) the Humira is very similar, but some Remicade-allergic patients are able to tolerate it.
  4. I have an A720is that I *like*, but I don't *love* it. It is slow to recycle/process between shots. Definitely not for shooting sports. You might be able to find some marked down SX20is cameras since the SX30is is releasing. Found one for $300.
  5. Nothing truly frightening. He's almost 9yo. He has a lot of impulsivity problems, which in PS would get him hauled off to the office for a phone call home. I got frequent phone calls when he was in PS. "Mrs Dansamy do you know what DS did?!?" Well, no, but I think you're about to tell me. The worst he did was push another child. I do think there's too much of a rush to diagnose and medicate. Which is why I am very hesitant to even consider mentioning it to our pediatrician.
  6. I know mine seeks sensory input. He talks to himself all day long. For lack of a better term, he "narrates" his day. Every day. All.day.long. It's gotten better since he got his hearing aids. I guess he hears more of the world around him now and doesn't need to tell himself about it quite as much. For behavior, he's just "on" all the time. Bull in a china shop kind of kid. He has to touch everything on the shelf at the store. I can control this by letting him push the buggy, but then he's dangerous to the ankles and shins of all around him. I refer to him as "all boy, all the time, balls to the wall, full speed ahead". That's the most accurate description I can give of him.
  7. I know you said your dc has other issues, but how bad is his ADHD? (I'm assuming it's ADHD since you mentioned the hyperactivity.) Can you describe a typical, unmedicated day? What sensory-seeking behaviors does he have? I'm very hesitant to get a diagnosis for my ds8, but if it will ultimately improve his life....
  8. I would. Are parents required to remain on the premises? I would certainly take the dc to its parent when it's soiled. This is school. Not day care.
  9. We're in AL. It's not part of our newborn screen. (Or, it wasn't when this child was 1st diagnosed, and she's about 2ish now.)
  10. We see a darling little girl in our hospital that has a problem. She has something called MCADD and must go on a drip of D10 when she runs a fever or vomits. Has your dc had MCADD ruled out already? I think Oschner's in NOLA diagnosed this patient.
  11. Remind her that crock-pots are lovely devices. She is easily able to start her Wednesday night dinner when she gets up at 6am to get those dc off to school. Offer to share a few recipes. Rave and gush about how much simpler it is to "set it and forget it". If she pulls that "you have so much more time" garbage, sweetly say "Oh, I just don't see how! I have mine at home all day doing school work plus my job and my business and my church work. Don't you just have the little one home with you? And you don't have a job or a business?" Unabashed snark is usually taken a bit better if accompanied by a good ol' "Bless your heart!"
  12. Mine is ineligible for service anyway. He is severely hearing impaired and wears hearing aids. I've been assured that he'll never pass the physical.
  13. FWIW, I adore Mint Mocha Frappucinos from Starbucks... They're like crack.... for caffeine addicts....
  14. Is there a label on the package? My diet Coke bottle now has to disclose the caffeine content. (Yes, I'm addicted to Diet Coke. I know it's bad for my bones.)
  15. No, it doesn't. Brewed tea averages 40mg per cup. Brewed coffee averages 100mg per cup. Tea does taste better though. So, give kidlet 2 cups of tea?
  16. I think they're bitter tasting. Has any one tried No-Doz or any other brand of caffeine pill in their self-medicating ADD experiment?
  17. That's about as good as mainlining it straight to the bloodstream. Make mine a Diet please! :D
  18. Yup. They will put a pretty significant hold over and above your rental fee on your account. This is to cover any late return charges or any damages to the car while in your possession. I certainly would consider the loss/damage waiver if I was using a debit card. Or ask your insurance if your full coverage insurance covers damages to a rental car. You don't want the rental company zapping your debit card for $1500. I think she would be "17" for the flight to TX. And, no she doesn't have a permit yet. :p Yes, her expired DL is gonna be a problem. I just don't know how big of one it will end up being.
  19. There's no way my 10 year old child would sleep alone on the first floor if she was scared. The air mattress would be out so fast, she'd get dizzy. It sounds like moving is your best option.
  20. There isn't a blood test for Crohn's. About the most you can find is some inflammatory markers in the blood, which indicate that the patient has an inflammatory process going on. Some doctors will look for certain markers that indicate an immune problem also.
  21. It helped that I had specific purposes for which I wanted a better camera. I had specific examples of things I wanted to do. I was able to be clear about what I wanted. That helped the folks at Steve's help me.
