  1. All of our middle schools here are like that. Private is marginally better than public.
  2. For future reference for coughing like that last night, I would take them in to the ER if it is accompanied by high fever unrelieved by the Tylenol/Motrin rotation or any breathing difficulty, including audible wheezing or whistling, elevated respiratory rate (20-24 is "normal" for 5yr old, >40 would worry me), increased work of breathing - all the little breathing muscles are can be observed during inspiration, nasal flaring, chest muscles above, below and between the ribs and in the neck. My youngest had a bad case of pneumonia when he was 6. We went to the ER when his T was 105 and he was shaking.
  3. I don't have any words of advice. I have "good readers", but their penmanship.... Well it looks like they are all kindergarteners and I have 6th, 5th and 4th. Maybe bring him down to the same level as the 7 year old and work with them together? Have you tested for any learning disabilities? Right now, all of mine are doing "remedial" work in LA and math. We're covering areas they didn't understand in PS or that weren't taught yet in PS. Both DH and I have terrible handwriting, so I'm not really worried about their penmanship at this point. Boys tend to be slower in their language development than girls also. So, maybe he just isn't ready to start writing essays. Maybe he needs to build a strong foundation of reading comprehension first.
  4. No you're not. I am. My children aren't allowed FB accounts. PERIOD. When they're grown, they can have one.
  5. Your kids might enjoy this: Human Body Lapbook
  6. Library? If you have a decent public library in your area, you can finish up your year without spending much at all.
  7. See above referenced "broke with a capital B". We received flour, peanut butter in gigantic tubs, 5lb blocks of govt cheese, saccharin tablets, etc. as part of the USDA surplus program. Today, that program has been replaced by WIC. (Thank you!!)
  8. I decided to join you on this one. I figure giving up Mardi Gras (until next year anyway :p) doesn't really count!
  9. Does she have really bad menstrual cycles? That could make her anemic and hypotensive, which could cause her to faint.
  10. Hearing test. He should be pronouncing the r sound by this age if his hearing is normal. If your pediatrician can't adequately test hearing, take him to a pediatric ENT.
  11. Quick math in my head says that 140 should be well within normal weight for a woman your height. You're 40. Your metabolism has slowed as a natural part of the aging process. 125 would probably be very difficult to maintain now. 121-160 is the weight range of normal BMI for your height. You're almost exactly in the middle of that range. If you don't like the shape/tone of your body, strength training would be good. You should be doing strength training for bone health anyway. Watch that your diet is healthy, but don't freak out about counting every little thing. Keeping a food journal might help with that. If you can see that you like to have dessert every night, you can counter that with good exercise habits.
  12. Why didn't they just do an a1c? That is a blood draw that tells your doctor how high your blood sugar has been during the last few months.
  13. Depression is so hard. While I'm a health care professional (I'm an RN) & should know better, it's still hard for me to understand/comprehend that dh can't just "snap out of it". He's been having a hard time lately with his meds and his head isn't in a good place right now. So sorry. I know how hard it is.
  14. If you haven't, go to the dollar store & make yourself an emergency sick kit. I stock benadryl, tylenol, cold medicine, tummy medicine, etc.
  15. Low Carb gets such a bad rap. Honestly, Atkins doesn't want you to write off an entire macronutrient. Atkins does advocate giving up all the refined carbs while you're losing. After you reach your goal, you might tolerate reasonable portions of refined foods. My biggest issue with Atkins now is pushing the low carb fake foods.
  16. Mine used to stick their fingers under the bathroom door and scream, "Mama are you in there? What are you doing?" (It was an old apartment. Doors had a gap at the bottom.)
  17. I get what you're saying. Personally, I didn't register for china/silver/crystal because I'm pretty antisocial. I knew hosting a casual BBQ would be even a stretch for me, much less a formal dinner.
  18. Because that 20 year old couple will one day graduate college and move into the career phase of their lives when they will buy a home and host parties and dinners. They won't live in that tiny apartment forever. They won't be 20 forever. The china/silver/crystal that you buy them now will follow them throughout their lives and may even be passed down to a daughter or granddaughter.
  19. I'm confused about this little slidy area. What's that for? How does that work?
  20. Buy it from HSBC or CBD. No annoying telemarketing calls!:hurray::party: And I think the first book in each grade level is review. So, you might want to order the second ones.
