  1. My 12 year old daughter and I watched most of the first show. Jazz seems like a sweet girl. Like the Duggers, I think it is a really bad idea to put children on t.v. This show will affect her for the rest of her life.
  2. I just stayed at Pop Century last month. I've also stayed at the All-Stars. From my perspective, the bus situation was far better at the All-Stars than Pop. Pop is a resort that, by itself, is almost as large as the 3 All-Stars. For that reason, the bus situation really is similar. I will say that we waited for a shorter time for All-Star buses than Pop. We waited over 45 minutes for a Pop bus when leaving DHS one night. We did enjoy that food court at Pop, and AOA is just across the lake. I will say that Pop wins hands down for atmosphere.
  3. I know this particular incident is related to a child's misguided ideas about religion, but it is important to remember that children say foolish and hurtful things to each other at times. This year, my sixth grade daughter had a boy tell her that she was "ugly and I hope you die." My daughter was a new kid who already felt like she didn't belong. Thankfully, contact with that boy was cut off quickly. I disagree with those who think that the girl should cut ties with this friend if, as the OP says, the little girl was not hateful or ugly. Talk to the parents and let the girls talk it out. How else is a child supposed to learn that words can hurt and have unintended effects on others?
  4. I live in Central Florida and definitely think that is hot! Tomorrow's weather should be 90+ degrees with near 100% humidity. The real feel will be 110 degrees, typical July in Florida.
  5. Have you tried homeschool reviews? I think many of the people on there are Christian. It isn't as active as this board but more active than other similar boards.
  6. No, Catherine of Aragon married two brothers, Henry VIII and his older brother. This situation is two different girls dating two different brothers.
  7. I taught TKAM to high school literature students this year, and I actually did tear up in class when Scout first recognized Boo and said, "Hey Boo", A couple of my students did too. I will probably read the new book, but, like others, I wonder how much input Harper Lee really had about publishing this novel.
  8. That is your opinion, and you are entitled to it. However, I can tell you that Chik-fil-a restaurants are very popular here in Florida. Please understand that not everyone shares your views.
  9. Chik-fil-a gives free food to those who come dressed as a cow.
  10. We are just coming out of some horrible economic times for us, partly due to job loss during the economic recession, and partly due to poor financial choices we made in our younger years. Oh, and then there are the health problems that both my husband and I have. I've listened to and read Dave Ramsey, and, for the most part, he has some good ideas, if you have a decent income. Finally, my husband has a job making a decent income although he has to work about 60 hours a week. I have been hired at a school for next year making more than I ever have, so we are finally coming out of our economic problems. We don't have debt except for about $1,500 in medical bills. We don't own a house, so we have few assets. Dh has a good 401k program, but we don't have much in it yet. We are beginning to follow Ramsey's advice about building an emergency fund and paying for things with cash. When my husband's car engine died in April, we bought and older Toyota Camry with cash. We still have a low car payment on my car, but I can see the benefits of buying a car outright. We only have one emergency credit card and don't plan on using credit at all any more. Seems I am rambling, but I guess I was so worried about our finances for so long that I didn't think we would ever get above water again. Rebuilding is hard when you are in your early 50s. (Well, I am actually 49, but 50 is just around the corner:)
  11. I have never allowed my daughter to bring peanut related items to school even though she has only attended one school that had a peanut ban. Since this is a home schooling forum, I have to say that, if my daughter had a deadly allergy to a specific food, I would definitely home school for all her school years. Why risk any exposure at a school?
  12. I was a missionary teacher in Mali for a while in my 20s. I knew of lots of mission work in West Africa. I taught the children of a family that had come to West Africa as agricultural missionaries. They went to outlying villages and dug wells so that the villagers could have clean water and also taught sustainable farming techniques to help stem the desertification going on at the time.
  13. I have a couple of weird ones. I was teaching in Seoul, South Korea during a rather tumultuous presidential election. Our school was on the street where the inaugural parade happened. Because the school faced the street, armed security guards and snipers were placed inside our classrooms. We were just supposed to go on teaching as though nothing were happening :tongue_smilie: The other is only a situation of being in the same city while an event took place. In 2013, we were living in southern China and visited Hong Kong a couple of times. The second time we were there, Edward Snowden had just arrived in Hong Kong after releasing the NSA documents. We were a little out of the loop and did not even really know who Snowden was at the time.
  14. I can't like this enough! As someone who has lived in three other countries besides America, I can tell you that issues with Christian values being counter to the culture of a nation is commonplace in other areas of the world. So what if everyone doesn't think and act like you think they should. I think Jesus made it pretty clear that this world is not our home. Acting "offended" at rulings that you disagree with will only cause division. Move on and let others do as they see fit.
  15. I agree that it isn't a good idea for a diabetic, but my doctor has not said anything about damage with blood sugars over 140. I was told to try to keep my blood sugars under 140 2 hours after eating, but even people who do not have diabetes have blood sugar spikes over 140 when they consume a lot of sugar/refined carbs. In fact, my doctor said that recently, the new guidelines for diabetics is to have a fasting sugar no more that 120. I know that 12 years ago, when I had gestational diabetes, I was told to keep it under 100. Also, A1C seems to matter more than individual blood sugar readings.
  16. I know you probably didn't mean to imply that everyone with Type 2 Diabetes is overweight, but it does seem like that is what you are suggesting. Also, everyone needs carbs. Diabetics cannot just go off carbs. We would die.
  17. High fat and protein is what I do. Oh, and if your A1C is below 7, you are doing well. Don't stress over the carbs. People erroneously think that diabetics can't eat any carbs. Of course you can! We need carbs to survive. Sometimes you have to try different carbs to see what your body reacts to strongly. For me,corn chips do not cause a spike in blood sugar if eaten in moderation, so I have been eating guacamole and tortilla chips as a snack lately. When I had gestational diabetes, eating every three hours also helped keep my blood sugar steady.
  18. I apologize. I really think we are circling around the same idea. I just know from my personal experience that I was greatly helped, even cured, of anger and bitterness after I forgave a particular person that had been very harmful to me. That person, btw, hasn't changed. She will never admit wrong, but I can now move on. Yes, I do still have contact with the person, but my emotions do not control me any more around her.
  19. No, it is the second part about forgiveness cannot cure emotional trauma.
  20. As a victim of molestation myself, I understand.
  21. "Forgiveness cures PTSD" sounds like kissing cousins to "prayer cures depression," especially with Billy Graham involved. Mind over matter works until it doesn't. We don't know enough about how the brain processes information, retrieves the memories it does, assigns the emotions it does, makes the choices it does. To suggest forgiving someone can cure emotional trauma is not only grossly inaccurate with regard to mental health, but quite terrible to those whose minds have become prisons of sorts through no fault of their own." I really don't know how else to interpret this. I do know people who "were cured of emotional trauma" through forgiveness. I am one of those people. It would be mean to suggest that everyone might be helped this way, but it is also wrong to suggest that no one can be helped this way.
  22. If you notice what I wrote, I wasn't trying to generalize PTSD being "cured" by prayer. I mentioned only the POW and people I personally know. Believe me, I have experienced spiritual abuse up close and personal. I have had bouts of severe depression and been told that it is a spiritual problem, and, I should just pray about, as though I hadn't been down on my knees praying already. I absolutely agree that it is sometimes used that way. Perhaps I am wrong, but Albeto seemed to be saying that prayer and spiritual guidance can never be helpful to a person. My point is that some people do find release through forgiveness and prayer. We are all individuals.
  23. I did grow up believing that, if you were " right with God" He would bless you and your family. Those who faced difficulties and struggles were looked down upon as having some sin in their lives. It wasn't until I got away from home and the conservative Christian background I grew up in that I realized that concept of God was totally wrong. A close reading of the book of Job helped too.
  24. Your belief system is different. It doesn't make the story of the POW any less true because you don't "believe" it. I have known plenty of people whose lives were changed for the better by truly forgiving a person who had wronged them in the past-whether or not the person had repented or asked for forgiveness. I am one of those people. As a Christian, I am grateful for the people who have forgiven me when I have hurt them. Sometimes, a story like Josh Dugger's makes us think more highly of ourselves than it ought to. Forgiveness is for the person wronged, not for the person who did the wrong.
  25. I am a middle and high school English teacher and would tend to disagree that most 10 years olds have the ability to handle abstract ideas such as racism, classism and poverty that are clearly portrayed in To Kill A Mockingbird. I know that I re-read several books that I originally read in high school and found that I gained much more from them after going through significant life circumstances. Most 10 year olds simply haven't experienced the world enough to truly get these concepts except at a very superficial level. And, I would very much disagree with To Kill a Mockingbird as a middle school book.
