  1. Is there any way she could start on her PHD now? One of the things I regret most is putting off a PHD because I never got back around to it. I realize it would have to be after her foot has healed, but a PHD program at a larger university could offer a living environment in which driving is not necessary.
  2. Congratulations on your freedom! I've been going through that too! I was raised in a very conservative denomination popular in the South. Once I hit my 40's, I realized that I really didn't believe the way I had been brought up. I'm 51 now and still coming to terms with the damage that I feel was done during the years I held such rigid beliefs. Since then, I have attended a Presbyterian and Methodist church in places where I have lived. Now, we are on the lookout for another church after recently moving to a new area. I am very interested in Orthodoxy and hope to find a congregation nearby soon.
  3. I'm with you! We just cannot stick to a severe budget because it is impossible to plan for all the things that might pop up in a month. I finally made one change that has helped us tremendously! We follow the guideline of "paying ourselves first." When we get our pay, we take a certain percentage off the top and put it into a savings account. This is not a retirement or college fund. This is our emergency and extras fund. I am also a budget shopper and careful with our money in areas that we really don't focus on. I shop sales on clothing for example and do not spend a lot of makeup or hair care. We drive older, affordable cars and continue to drive them for as long as we can after paying the car off. This helps me not feel guilty about paying for a great home school field trip or indulge in a night out occasionally. Of course, we could probably be managing our money better, but I'm happy with the choices we make and standard of living we enjoy.
  4. . I have a 15 year old daughter with ADHD, ODD, and SPD. We are homeschooling because the classroom is definitely not the environment for her. I guess I am needing a little support because my ex-husband and most of my immediate family do not understand her issues or even really believe there is a problem. My ex-husband knows the problem is real, but he would rather pop in for fun times than deal with problems. Does anyone else get angry or bitter when family refuses to acknowledge your child's issues? I especially struggle with one of my sisters (a doctor no less) who is constantly bragging about all the things her neurotypical kids are doing. She implies that my kid could too if I were a better mother. She has even somewhat convinced my parents that I am making some of her problems up. How do I deal with this when I am her only real advocate, and I feel guilty enough all the time that my daughter struggles with these issues?
  5. I think you and I must have had the same stylist! I din;t think they understand Florida weather!:)
  6. Got my second Stitch Fix box, and it was not a keeper. I had a new stylist this time, and she did not get my style at all. I am 50, and still adjusting to that fact:) This box seemed too old lady for me. I have a wardrobe board on Pinterest that I attached and have been pretty clear about what I like. Also, I live in Central Florida, and this box had a heavy, woolen cardigan, long sleeved dress, and long-sleeved flannel plaid shirt! I might be able to wear any of those three items for a month out of the year at most. I am hoping this was a one off, and that next time they actually listen to me. I did keep a cute, sheer sleeveless top.
  7. I am waiting for my second one. I have them scheduled every two months for now. I was happy with the last one and am really looking forward to the next. As a petite person, I love that the lengths actually work for me.
  8. We are in the south Clermont region. Strangely, we only lost power for about 20 minutes. There is tree damage and water spots on the ceiling in the living room and my daughter's bedroom. The eye wall came through our area with 100mph wind gusts. We feel very fortunate!
  9. West of Orlando with what is left of the eye coming in the next two hours with projected 75+ mph winds. It will be a long night!
  10. https://www.collegeprepscience.com/ I saw this in a post on another home school group.
  11. Thanks for the suggestions. My daughter learns best through lecture. We will also use the text or video as well. We have the Great Courses Plus subscription, but wouldn't we need a text too? I'll definitely check out Tabletclass. I've also heard good things about A+ tutor math.
  12. I would like to know about algebra programs that work well for auditory learners. Any and all suggestions are welcome!
  13. I meant to say that she can only see the cousins she likes the most a few times a year.
  14. Thanks for responding. I wish we could but we don't live close enough. She does see one of her cousins and we do Al ask her over but she's only nine years old. Unfortunately
  15. I have an issue that I don't really know how to deal with. My daughter has the diagnoses in the title. She is the only grandchild with these issues although I suspect one of my nieces will have an ADHD diagnosis later. The problem is that my parents, sisters and BIL dont "believe" in these diagnoses and think my husband and I don't parent her right. Case in point, at Thanksgiving, my early teen daughter had a meltdown over sensory issues at the big family gathering. This caused my sister to say some not so nice things about my family. The rest of the family then jumped on us so that we left soon after. When she was younger and cuter, they tolerated her, but now they think she should just get over it. We also had an incident this summer in which my sister hurt my daughter's feelings. And, yes, she knew she did because my daughter started crying. I got upset and defended my daughter and now my parents and one sister are telling me that we are causing problems in the family! My sister was clearly at fault, but she is also the golden child. I know I need to keep my daughter from my toxic family, but my daughter really loves her cousins. She is an only child and gets lonely. Her other grandmother and cousins live 2000 miles away. At this point I don't want to be around my family, but I feel bad keeping her from her cousins. Anyone else go through something like this?
  16. My 14 year old 8th grader took it for the second year. She did absolutely no prep work. I just wanted her to have the experience. Starting next year, we will be prepping. She did poorly on the science section, but she hasn't had any real chemistry or physics. But her reading score was a 23. Over all, she had a commendable score for an 8th grader.
  17. My 14 year old daughter was playing with her old doll house last night  :001_smile: . I am glad she still likes to play with toys. She will occasionally play with barbies too, and sometimes I join her.
  18. My daughter will start high school this summer. For several reasons we may use the full-time virtual school here in Florids. Many will claim that is just "school at home." I guess it is, but we are involved in several homeschool groups for teens that have both traditional homeschoolers and virtual schoolers. It is a great mix for us. My daughter's best friend is a virtual school student, but she attends the homeschooling field trips, dances and social gatherings. We haven't found the virtual school restricting in the homeschool events
  19. My perspective on this is a little strange. I wanted marriage and kids when I was young. I had the opportunity to marry right out of college and choose to work on my career instead. By the time I was 28, I regretted not marrying after college and now really wanted that husband and kids. At 32, I met the man I married, and we had a few months of fertility issues including an Ectopic pregnancy that almost killed me. I did finally have my one and only child at 36. A few years after she was born, I realized I had married just to be married and have a child. My husband and I mutually agreed that we weren't really in love, and that we both had married for the same reason. We aren't together anymore, but we are friends and raising our daughter together. I am now in a relationship with someone else I met almost a year ago, shortly after I turned 50. I am in love with this person, and I will say that our relationship has been awesome partly due to the fact that we don't want something else out of it. We are happy with each other. This person was worth waiting for, but I wouldn't trade my daughter for anything. :Life is complicated and rarely goes according to plan.
  20. I disagree, and I am a high school English teacher. For Christian thought, C.S. Lewis is among the best out there. Books do not have to belong the realm of classical literature to be great.
  21. I live in Orlando and have an annual pass to Universal and my husband works at Disney. In fact, we were at Magic Kingdom last night for the final Wishes show. Lots of good advice on here. The HP sections of both parks are great. Try to do Hogwart's Express both ways as the window scenes are different. Don't miss Knockturn Alley in the Diagon Alley area. There are so many things to do at Disney, but one of our favorites is to ride some of the rides during the day and at night. Big Thunder Mountain at MK seems like a totally different ride at night. And, if you time it right, you can see the castle fireworks during the ride. I hope you have a great trip!
  22. Just bought my first pair this year, and I'll be 51 in June. I can still read most things without reading glasses.
  23. It does if the home school groups aren't flexible on hours. I would gladly volunteer in a homeschool activity on the weekends. because i work during the week, any weekday activities would have to be events after 5:00 p.m.
  24. This fits my situation exactly. I am a public high school English teacher. I've taught for 20 years. My only child has what used to be called Asperger's Syndrome, sensory issues, ADHD and is also gifted academically. A regular classroom setting does not fit her well. My husband works nights and sleeps during the day. I am at school until 4:00 at least each day. That does not give us much opportunity to volunteer or even participate in homeschool groups. My daughter participates in one co-op every Thursday from 10:00-2:00, and we are not required to volunteer. Believe me, I would if I could.
  25. If you have a student who has dual enrolled, what ACT/SAT score did they need to get into the program? I am located in central Florida and will check with the local college as well. I just wanted to have a ball park figure in mind.
