  1. Here's the link to it http://www.cimt.plymouth.ac.uk/projects/mep/default.htm I would look over the first few pages of several levels before printing it all out, to see where your child fits. There's also a mep yahoo group, they can give you a ton of information. It goes from Reception ( our K) through high school levels. I haven't used it, so I can't answer any specific questions, but I am considering it for the coming year for my kids. HTH, Kim
  2. Here it is http://www.amazon.com/McGuffeys-Eclectic-Readers-William-McGuffey/dp/0471294284/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1276100379&sr=1-1 I bought mine on ebay for a lot less than that. You can also try http://www.homeschoolclassifieds.com Kim
  3. For the last three years I've been adding Catholic content to our Bible based curriculum....and it's made me feel like Catholicism was just another subject to get through. I really want my children and myself to live our faith every day, not just read a page from a catechism book and move on to the next thing. As my oldest (11) has gotten older, it's gotten harder to pre-read all of his books for anti-Catholic content. For the upcoming school year for our 6th and pre-k/k children, we are doing CHC as written for the pre-k/k child. For the 6th grader CHC Stories of the Saints, Image of God and Catholic Textbook Project's All Ye Lands books. I'm using Connecting with History to flesh it out the reading lists and for memory work. We use Hillside's Intermediate Language Lessons and will move on to their Lingua Mater for 7th grade. Blessings, Kim
  4. If you need the intensive phonics you are probably better off with AAS. Especially since you are already using it and it's working for you. Have you looked at Seton's spelling? I personally am trying to stay away from "workbook" type of programs, which is why I passed on CHC's Spelling & Grammar, but I am an odd duck:w00t:. I say, find what works for you and stick with it. Does it really matter if Spelling is Catholic based? Take Care. Kim
  5. I haven't used their Grammar or Spelling as we are happy with what we are using. You can look at sample pages on the website. It states that the spelling is phonics based. Their customer service seems to be really good too, you could call and talk to them about it. I just received my order for 6th & pre k/k today. We do use ILL, Hillside edition and it is just lovely, very gentle but thorough. We will move on to Lingua Mater next year. I just wish Hillside also made a spelling program! Blessings, Kim
  6. What about History Odyssey? It's classical, chronological and teaches writing the WTM way.It includes Literature. It might be a good fit for him, at his age he could read and go through it mostly on his own. I haven't used HO myself, this is just from looking at the samples. For math, have him take placement tests from different programs and see where he places and which program he likes the look of. For grammar, Rod & Staff has a remedial English set that covers the basics of grammar and punctuation.http://www.rodandstaffbooks.com/item/1-129-6/?list=Rod_and_Staff_Remedial_English For Spelling, maybe Spelling Power ( if he likes lists and doesn't like crosswords etc), Sequential Spelling ( same as SP) or Spelling City online now has Sequential Spellings lists for free http://www.spellingcity.com/avkofoundation/ I think basic Evan Moor type of workbooks for Geography and anything else he needs to brush up on would be fine. For Handwriting,www.currclick.com has a lot of down loadable ones, Happy Scribe for instance has books on Proverbs, Famous Americans etc. You should be able to find one that interest's him. For Logic, The Fallacy Detective, I've heard is good. Would he be interested in Latin? That's great for higher order thinking/reasoning skills. HTH, Kim
  7. Sometimes, we all just need a break from school. Don't feel bad about taking some down time for yourself, we all need it. As for school times, my rough schedule has been 1/2 grades 60-90 minutes per day. 5/6th grades 3 hours per day. that includes reading on your own time. Blessings, Kim
  8. For Science, you could use world book's standard course of study as a guide, and borrow appropriate books from your library. Here http://www.worldbook.com/typical_course_of_study.html You can also use Lesson Pathways, which is now free. Here http://www.lessonpathways.com/Home For Grammar Scott Foresman has free workbooks online herehttp://www.sfreading.com/resources/ghb.html Other Scott Foresman links Science http://www.sfscience.com/index.htm Spelling http://www.everydayspelling.com/index.html Math http://baltimore.scottforesman.com/ Social Studies http://www.sfsocialstudies.com/index2.html Math & Science http://pgcounty.scottforesman.com/ Hopefully, you will find something in all of that that will help you. Blessings, Kim
  9. We used Spelling Power, we didn't care for it. We now use Simply Spelling by shoelace books and are very happy with it. It follows the CM style with dictation. HTH, Kim
  10. Kymmie, I like the look of CHC, much better than Seton. Seton is also very heavy on workbooks.I'm very excited to be getting CHC prek/k next week! I really don't think little kids are that into Bible stories, at least my kids aren't. They would rather "do" than sit and be read to. Blessings, Kim
  11. They are doing a great newcomers deal right now, free shipping and the K program for $150. They just emailed me & offered me free UPS shipping upgrade on my order. You'd need to add 3 pre/k workbooks to the set, that's what I did. Here's the sale page http://www.chcweb.com/conference/giveaways.html Blessings, Kim
  12. We are Catholic. My son is 3 1/2 yrs old, he hasn't been interested in our Story Bible. I just ordered for him CHC prek/k package. Also, I use a lot of the St. Joseph coloring books and Fr. Lovasik books. Herehttp://www.catholicbookpublishing.com/BrowseByDepartments.aspx?DepID=66 and here http://www.fatherlovasikpublications.com/shop.cfm?aa=70 Using those have worked much better for us. The coloring books have a ton of information. I bought most of my books at our local Catholic store. Blessings, Kim
  13. They called me a lot last year when I was looking at their curriculum, had it in my cart but did not purchase it. They called me every other day for two weeks. Finally, my husband talked to them and told them that he would not allow me ( like he would ever stop me from doing anything:D) to purchase anything from them BECAUSE of the repeated calling. They stopped calling, but still send me a catalog every year. It was really creepy. Kim
  14. We love Simply Spelling. It's for grades 3-12 in one book. I had Spelling Power and it was just lists of words, I had to come up with my own dictation. Simple Spelling has everything I wanted. Here's the link http://shoelacebooks.ecrater.com/product.php?pid=1490908 HTH, Kim
  15. We love Startwrite. It does type the letters smoothly, like a workbook. I've had mine for two years and never heard of an update. You can also copy and paste into the program. For instance, a poem that's online or in a document, you can highlight, copy and paste it into Startwrite, in the font you choose. HTH, Kim
  16. I have a rising 6th grade add/dyslexic son. I've found the best thing I can do is to keep the lessons short and interesting, and keep on a schedule. My son needs to know that at x time yz will happen. My son loves hands on science projects, and reading for a short period of time. I used A Beka when I went to a private school, so I looked at it when we started homeschooling. I found it to be dry and overwhelming, with a lot of busy work that you don't need in a homeschool (tutor) environment. My son did very well with My Father's World curriculum. It has short but engaging lessons and is a solid curriculum. My son also likes to do some of his work on the computer. We do math drills and spelling review via computer games that I bought at Costco. Feel free to mix and match from different publishers to get what fits your Grandchild. Blessings, Kim Edited To Add I think it's wonderful that you are adopting your Grandchild. You are obviously loving, caring people to be so concerned for his well being. I was raised by my Grandparents but they were unable to adopt me. To this day, 30 years later, I tell my Mom Thank You for raising me( Dad passed away years ago). What you are doing will make a huge difference in his life. Blessings to your family. Kim
  17. I also live in NC and all I could tell you is to ask your librarian. They are amazing sources of knowledge. Good Luck! Kim
  18. You sound like my husband.:laugh: No worries, I still live with him, so you're good!:D Kim
  19. Cross posting this here How about the Catholic Textbook Project? A friend of mine who was a Catholic school teacher uses them in her homeschool and loves them. I plan to purchase it for next year. Here's the link http://cstp.myshopify.com/ On the left side, in red, you can see sample chapters. FYI it is cheaper to buy them at Ignatius Press. Blessings, Kim
  20. Since I know you are Catholic (from the other thread), how about the Catholic Textbook Project? A friend of mine who was a Catholic school teacher uses them in her homeschool and loves them. I plan to purchase it for next year. Here's the link http://cstp.myshopify.com/ On the left side, in red, you can see sample chapters. FYI it is cheaper to buy them at Ignatius Press. Blessings, Kim
  21. No, it comes with Bible Truth Memory Cards, which I would skip. I just want the crafts, so I don't have to hunt for them. We live 30 miles from the closest city with a craft store, so it makes more sense for me to buy a kit with it all there. Kim
  22. LCC is Latin Centered Curriculum ( it's a book, amazon has it) ...and it's not a stupid question! It takes a long time to learn all of the short hand. Kim
  23. Winter Promise has a wonderful catalog with beautiful books. My current plan is to do RC history w/ Catholic Textbook Project as my spine and add in some of Winter Promise's books for enrichment ( my library has a ton of them). The books about jobs in Ancient Egypt as an example. Also, I'm going to use hands and hearts history kits for art projects ( my hubby found those and told me to buy them). I get the best of all worlds this way! Link here http://handsandhearts.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWCATS&Category=2 Kim
