  1. Does anyone else have an opinion on which way to set it up- as in scaled down the same or different??
  2. See, I agree fully with you! However, I had already taken the advise of the previous posters and made a scaled timeline. :001_huh: Maybe I will just ask the kids! I just want to START it already! KWIM?
  3. :bigear: I have my youngest doing this currently. He's in the 6th grade. I have an entire shelf full of science experiment books. Yes, a lot of the books are for younger kids- BUT he can always continue with the experiment following his own interests. For the questions and such, I am using WTM science questions she has listed. My only "complaint" is that he doesn't do the experiments unless I get on to him and on to him. HTH
  4. Hmm... Interesting! I do like the cardstock idea with painter's tape. But also the close-up below the wall timeline. Prairie rose, I went to the link you added. Did you use different scales for different periods? I have heard of people doing this before, but I always thought it would give the kids a somewhat "off" big picture. I thought that was the whole point- or a main point of doing a timeline, was/is to help thhem to see when things took place compared to other events... etc. So, right now, I'm thinking about going with a combo of all. Cardstock & painter's tape with the close-up below... But still I am undecided about the lengths.
  5. We're doing health. I have a bit older ones- grades 6, 7 and 9th. We're using Total Health.
  6. I'm curious to the length of everyone's timeline. What seems to be the ideal space between each century for you? How is it working for you? Did you start and then have to add? I am set on starting one this year! I know everyone has their own ways of doing things and timelines can be done a zillion different ways, however, for all you wall timeline keepers- :D any thoughts? Ideas? Input of any kind? :bigear:
  7. For those of you who use or have used the Story of Science- what is a good space between each century for the timeline?
  8. I am trying to combine subjects. Would this book work for a 6th grader in addition to the different history spines WTM recommends for the logic stage? My idea is to have them add the science focused events and scientists onto their timeline as well as other historic events/people. My DREAM would be to find a science version ofsomething like The Encyclopedia of World History for SCIENCE WITH related experiments! But......... Dream on, right?! I wish I was creative enough + had time to put something like that together. Anyhow~ Would the Story of Science be okay to use in this way? I think I will get it anyway, but I'm just thinking ahead... Thanks!
  9. Has anyone use this book? Have you used the student and/or teacher guides? Here is a link to the books I'm talking about: The Story of Science There are actually three volumes. THe author is Joy Hakim- Author of History of US. I'm thinking of at least getting the main book, although I'd love any input on any of the books. I'm thinking of using it TWTM way. Thank-you!
  10. We started using storage boxes. They only have one level-- no digging to the bottom of the box! They are sold at craft stores and some (I think) at Walmat. Here's a link of what some of ours look like: http://www.joann.com/joann/catalog/productdetail.jsp?pageName=search&flag=true&PRODID=prd62269 **The ones we use have removable/adjustable sections. Also- we use these for LEGOS! :) BIG help!!
  11. I'm just frazzled at this point. You are all right though. And I guess I knew I was piling it on too much- or I wouldn't have posted.. I think I'll just have him do what we have listed as his daily things right now, and then sit down with him and go through all of it between now and Sunday. So we can be ready to go again Monday.
  12. Blah! < that's how I feel! I feel like sending them all (3) on the bus and sitting back and kicking up my feet... But that'll never happen. So........... Anyone want a few students?? I wish I wouldn't worry so much about whether or not he/they do or don't *really* need this or that! The pressure is just killing me! AHH! :chillpill: <<< I know, I need to- but I jusy can't. Even venting isn't helping me! We're only on our 4th week! I usually don't start to feel like this until Christmas! What's the deal? We started homeschooling in 2003, so it's not like I'm super new to this! :ack2::banghead:
  13. Okay, here goes nothing... I need help simplifying ds's schedule. He's in 7th grade, age 12. Here are his subjects, along with the time he said he felt each would take. Daily subjects are in red. Other subjects state how many times a week he does them.. (ex: 3x) ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Bible Prayer Journal (15 min.) Write Upon My Heart (20 min.) Physical Education President's Challenge (30 min.) 200 Situps (5 min.)* 100 pushups (5 min.)* *Don't worry- He doesn't actually DO trhis many- it's just he program's title. Health Today's Health (with workbook) 30 min. Math Saxon Math (1.5 hrs) Life of Fred Percent & Fractions 25 min. (1x) Logic Building Thinking Skills 20 min. (1x) Foreign Language Rosetta Stone's Spanish level 1 homeschool *Haven't start- just received today. By looking at the schedule (briefly) it looks to be daily. Special Interest Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain (book & DVD) We do this in the evening together. (1-1.5 hrs.) The time is based on a guess from how long we usually draw for, although it is his choice. Reading- He does on his own, so I do not feel the need to schedule it. He reads for around an hour or more daily. -------------------------------------------------------- Here is the problem: I really WANT to simplify. I don't WANT him to have hours upon hours of work to do. However, I just can't seem cut anything!! He struggles in spelling & grammar- that is why I have him doing so much in it. Logic- he's never taken before- Hence the lower level book. History & Goegraphy he really enjoys doing, and actually helped me decide on the items that are listed. Science, & math- well, he must take that! He loves art- as you probably can tell. We all know the importance of learning a foreign language- especially spanish! Besides, a lot of his friends speak it! Soooooooooooooooo.............. Go on- tell me I'm bonkers! :iagree: His daily items should be done able to be in the morning. IF he can stop himself from chatting it up with his brother! ;) All Right--- Leaving it up to you all... :bigear:pb
  14. BTW~ Your book rules sound a lot like mine! ;) I don't allow name calling either. Or violent events, unless TRUE and written FOR kids, in a well written form.
  15. Sometimes I just wish I could understand WHY they think it's okay to do a job half-heartedly! What do they think is going to happen when they get out in the real world? I want their standards to be higher- because THEY want them to be!
  16. I have three kids. Ages 11, 12 and 14 yrs.. In grades 6, 7 and 9th. For my two youngest, I have written oout schedules for each SUBJECT, and told them how many times a week they must do that subject. As for WHAT they do, WHEN they do it- it is mostly up to them. This is a new thing I am trying this year as they wanted more freedom. My oldest is very organized, and responsable so she has had freedom for a couple years now. She has assignments, a lot of which are weekly.. Such as do lesson 4 in biology.. It is up to her to break up the work. If she needs help, however, she needs to come to me. I do check in on her, but for the most part, it is up to her to ask for the help if she needs it. I can't read her mind! ;) Correcting is something that any of them can do, and do, at times. I don't care to turn it entirely over to them, however because I like to keep tabs on what is going on. If they do poorly, it sends up red flags- telling me they aren't understanding something- or rushing through their work and not fully paying attention. I think a lot of moms have their older kids do their own correcting because they can learn a great deal from it. Although if it is too much you should talk to your mom and explain it to her. Especialy the areas in which you need the one on one interaction with her! :001_smile: If she's real busy, she may not realize you really need and want her help and involvement. Also, maybe if there is little ones, you could do the one on one at night or during the little ones naps? Hope this helps!
  17. I am learning every day it seems, and my kids are in grades 6, 7 and 9th this year. Perhaps you would like to look into some free online classes? Although one of the best ways to learn is to teach. I hate it when my kids know something I don't..... but I try not to let it bother me.... I think the kids enjoy being the one to teach for once! ;) If nothing else, however, I would read, read, and read some more!
  18. See, this is a problem- as I tell my kids to stop goofing off, as they are wasting their playtime.......... But.......... If they're going to rush through it...... They miss the *ENTIRE* point! :tongue_smilie: The other thing- she gets up and gets at it right away, so she will have playtime! AH! Why don't kids come with manuals??? I'd be in the "Trouble Shooting" section quite often! :D
  19. You all have great points and ideas! I have been riding her about the sloppiness.. Marking things wrong if she writes over another letter w/o erasing. It seems horrible, and I feel terrible, but I don't want her to settle at turning in that level of work! On the other hand- I know what you all are talking about with slow kids! I have two boys who fall into this category! Whih makes me go into the questioning myself mode- "Am I just being too hard?" But I usually come out of that pretty quickly, when I think- "NO! I WANT them to ALWAYS do their BEST!" It's just the 'getting there' that is SOO hard! Will I EVER get there?
  20. Does anyone else have the problem of any of their DC rushing through their work? What do you do to stop it? I keep telling her it's going to be real hard to earn a credit when she only spends a very short period of time on it! I wouldn't fuss, but she's sabotaging her grades in the process! No reading her texts with thought....... plowing through her written work like she has somewhere to go- she does not! Not to mention the lack of use of a simple yet VERY useful item- an....... ERASER! Goodness! Anyone have any thoughts, input, advice.... or shall I just shoot myself in the foot and forget about it?!
  21. I wonder if they put a camera in there and it's running live feed? creepy
