  1. We only do BA on weekends but even if it were our main spine, I would stick with an hour/day and not get too hung up on how much got done. We have spent an hour working on one problem (and associated thoughts) and we have flown through lots of problems/hour at other times.
  2. I'm glad you sent the message. I have had a few times to do uncomfortable things like that and I've always drawn strength from knowing my kids depend on me to do what's best for them so I just have to suck it up and do it. Doesn't make it any more fun, though. :grouphug:
  3. We picked out our roofer and decided out of the options they had to go with Owens Corning Oakridge. We're heading to Home Depot to finalize a color. As I mentioned, choosing a roofer often really cuts down on the possibilities and helps narrow the selection. Have you contacted some roofers and gotten some bids yet?
  4. I care about all of you too much to let you get alcohol poisoning.
  5. I checked yesterday and my library's copies of The Martian are either checked out or on hold. Then this morning the library's automated service called to say DH's 3 books on hold are ready for pick up. Here's hoping... Yeah, no kidding. I'm very intrigued.
  6. I think I'm just going to have to read Julie of the Wolves and decide for myself. I've been avoiding it because a friend told me about the "rape" scene which may not have been a rape scene after all. DS likes the author's other books. Judy Blume had an interesting interview awhile back in which she said kids often just skip over what they don't understand. I think that's kind of true, at least it was for me until a certain age. When I was maybe 13-14, I started digging down into stuff I didn't understand rather than just skipping it to hear the rest of the story.
  7. It was jarring because it made no sense to consider it a response to a comment about child rape. I said the book had sexuality in it. I don't consider rape to be sexuality. And what kind of a person would add a smiley to a post about child rape? When I find something jarring, I pause and wonder why rather than shout at the well-meaning stranger. I'm sorry you are angry. And I sincerely regret using your comment about not remembering sexuality in Holocaust books to give people a friendly heads-up. Perhaps if we were talking in person it would have been more obvious that I was responding to the last thing you said, not the first.
  8. Yes, I was referring to the last sentence about sexuality in Holocaust books and just giving everyone a heads-up that there's a newer, more complete edition that may be more intimate than what posters read in their own school years. Thank you for those who clarified for me while I was away from the computer. Being accused of equating the two things is crazy to me. I'm so angry right now. How could someone even think that someone would equate a description of labia with the rape of a 7yo? At some point wouldn't the person typing think their accusation was so preposterous that they might have misunderstood? Maybe that would be better than doubling down and using all caps to shout at me? And then doubling down again when someone tried to clarify on my behalf? What? Unbelievable.
  9. The 50th anniversary definitive edition has sexuality in it. These were removed from the earlier editions and were added back in. You can read an article with a few excerpts here. Just FYI that it may not be what you remember. :)
  10. Our Goodwill started getting pickier but Salvation Army still takes a lot of stuff Goodwill won't.
  11. We're doing a roof next month. Have you picked out a roofer? Usually a roofer has a few brands they like to work with and that can really cut down on the choices.
  12. I don't know all their songs and the lyrics, but REM? I can't think of anything I wouldn't let a 12 yo listen to. Check out this link as well. I use Common Sense Media quite a bit.
  13. We didn't. We decluttered while packing to move and obviously some things could be packed into boxes before others. We tried to pack in categories as much as we could. We also decluttered some more while unpacking, when we had a fresh perspective. We did that one box at a time, without having everything in the category in front of us. We did have a dump of stuff the movers picked up for us from storage on moving day and we haven't gone through that. It's just sitting in the garage.
  14. I pre-ordered it back when this thread drew my attention to it. Unfortunately when it arrived it was not very enticing to DS. I'm going to read it aloud to DD and try DS later. Sometimes the same books work better at a different time.
  15. I ended up shoehorning in The Mysterious Benedict Society because DS wants to design some studies around it. (We're trying to follow 8's Homeschooling at the Helm for this.) It's a fun trilogy plus there's a prequel and a puzzle book. I meant to get Faust done last week but with TMBS sneaking in, I didn't. I'm going to try and finish before my houseguests arrive this weekend. This is another book I've picked up in the bookstore, skimmed through, and returned to the shelf, but without removing it from my mind. Thanks. DH will be pleased!
  16. Each of our beds has 2 sets of bedding, one regular cotton and one flannel, depending on the weather. So we don't really alternate, we just remove bedding, wash it, and put it back on. We have 1 bath towel/person, plus 2 towels for the pool. We have a separate set of 6 guest towels which we will move into the regular rotation when our day-to-day towels wear out. I have to say that the guest ones, which are these beautiful fluffy bright white towels, give me more joy than the older ratty ones! A couple of our daily towels are 25 years old! I know because I bought them from Costco in college. Never buy Costco towels if you don't want to keep them forever, I guess. We probably have 5-6 washcloths and the same number of dishcloths. We don't have a dishwasher so we dry by hand a lot. We also have a lot of mismatched cloth napkins I've picked up at various yard sales and thrift shops. Those make me happy, though. We have 3 tablecloths but lately I've been enjoying the uncluttered look of the table without a cloth. Maybe those can go to I can just keep one for holidays.
  17. I agree with CA. Even in a small town, I doubt anyone would check the state database to make sure their neighbors have filed a private school affidavit. One year it slipped my mind until spring.
  18. Thanks for the links. I like Banksy too and I had heard about this project but hadn' had time to follow up on its status.
