  1. Yeah, she's ina bit of a pickle. She doesn't want her name on the licenses, but when they are given out without her name on them, she says they're not legal. So she wants the state to change the marriage licenses to be given out under the authority of the state, not the county, which will affect the jobs of the other ~120 people in her position in other counties. And that would take an act of the legislature, which won't be able to act on it until January.
  2. Sooo... What do you think is going to happen tomorrow when she returns to work?
  3. HAPPY 99th BIRTHDAY ROALD DAHL! Robin, thank you for the new thread and the Frost poem as well. I decided to start The Folly and am hoping I'll get to discuss it with Jane when she has a chance to read it as well. So far I like it. I enjoy books in which there's a factor that starts unravelling normal day-to-day life. Where's the "bowing down" smilie? I read that book a few years back. I agree it's really depressing but also good. Another book I think of when I think of The Alienist is Devil in the White City.
  4. We did Music Together classes that had class-specific CDs and songbooks, but it looks like they've put together compilations for sale on their web site. The regular class CDs have singing exercises on them (short ones, based on the rhythms of the preceding song) but I'm not sure if these have the exercises or just the songs on them. You can email or call.
  5. Update: After surreptitiously and quickly recycling our copy, I ended up taking my friend's daughter to her piano lesson. I had to take my DD along as it was all a last minute arrangement. Guess what was in the waiting room?
  6. I like Hunter's suggestion too. There was another really good one using Cuisinaire rods but I can't find it now.
  7. Long division and telling time were my head banging moments for math, at least so far. Are you trying the Singapore way? They teach it by explaining how the algorithm is just for keeping track of place values.
  8. We're happy for you!!! Big congrats from our family to yours. :grouphug: :grouphug: :grouphug:
  9. We got the catalog yesterday and I recycled it so fast the bin was spinning. Beautiful costumes but so expensive! :drool5: We don't celebrate Halloween but the kids are kids and love costumes for any time of the year so they still see the catalog as fair game. And I'm glad there's a pre-made alternative to the "slutty _____" look so popular these days.
  10. Love the photo!!! It's kind of ridiculous how good y'all look. A new mark has been set for all future WTM group photos.
  11. Sorry, I meant specifically in FaithManor's church's new policy. If her church doesn't want to be an agent of the state and is asking couples to get legally married before having their ceremony, are they doing anything for couples who don't want to be legally married at all? Will they do a solely religious wedding in which they are also not agents of the state? I should have been more clear.
  12. So I guess rather than returning to work today, Davis is returning Monday.
  13. Just curious... Is there a provision for people who only want a church marriage and not a legal one? That would mean the church did not have to act as an agent of the state, but also the couple who didn't want a state-sanctioned marriage wouldn't be forced to get one. Some people have principles against any state involvement for the church and themselves as well.

  15. Thanks for the review. I was thinking about using it as a living book for DS this year as part of our Earth science studies. DS is sensitive about some things and not others. How gory was it? (And in my research I saw an old post from you about the Scientists in the Field series. Thank you!) Can you be more specific about other books you're looking for? Other books about natural disasters, volcanoes, this specific eruption, excellent blending of history and science, etc?
  16. I came here to post this but figured I'd better check and see if someone beat me to it. I'll post this article from the BBC instead.
  17. I just finished TIOBE. I had no idea it was so hilarious!
  18. Yes! I told him if he's not missing some problems, it's too easy and we're wasting his time doing what he already knows how to do.
  19. Well if it is a hoax the joke was on the columnist first. I'm not trying to pull anyone's leg!
  20. She came down on the side of love, with some good information on legally changing your name anyway.
  21. I didn't have to hand-hold too much in the math part except one section involving dots and diagrams or some such. I did spend a lotta lotta lotta time helping my perfectionist get into the right frame of mind. This included reading about how Beast works, how struggle is necessary, good quotes from Mindset and discussions about mathematicians taking years to solve problems. The funny thing is, it finally sunk in one day when I asked him to say the alphabet. He said it quickly and fluently. I asked him what he had learned from that exercise. He told me he had learned nothing. I asked him if he would get ahead by spending his time on things he already knows or by struggling and a lightbulb went on in his head. He's been pretty good about struggling since. It's a code for us now: "Well do you want to just sit here and recite the alphabet, or do you want to move ahead?"
  22. I remember reading an Ann Landers (?) column in the 1980s about a young woman who had spent her life with the last name of "Hooker" and couldn't wait to get married and change it after all the teasing she had endured. She fell in love with someone whose last name was "Hore" and wanted advice.
