  1. Jello shots made with Everclear. :ack2: Tequila shots. 2 am baseball in the street with a ratty tennis ball and a couple of wooden boards. To be fair, if I never do tequila shots again there's an excellent chance this will never happen again. Be able to shut down(friendly) insults about the Cubs from my Red Sox fan friends by simply saying, "Yeah. Well, Buckner." Happily I will still be able to point that the only reason I know about Buckner is because of a documentary and not because I'm old enough to actually remember 1986....which does shut him up. I know...but really we're good friends. :D Walk from the Shedd to Navy Pier in uncomfortable shoes that don't fit right. The blisters were unreal.
  2. :grouphug: You sound like me, except that I am heavier. I started counting points 2 weeks ago. I don't go to meetings or do it online because I can't afford it. I've lost 11.5 pounds in weeks. I was not especially motivated to start. I fought myself almost every day....but I have more energy now and I feel like I've accomplished something. It's a small accomplishment, but still. It's something. I want the results, so I'm willing to put in the work now. It also helps that I get a natural high from 20-30 minutes of cardio. I love to walk, but even more I love the rush I get from the exercise. The rest of the day I'm floating. I just wanted to say that if I can do it, you totally can. I am completely out of shape, I am totally an emotional/stress eater, and I tend towards lazy. I'm still making better food choices every day. It's true I don't eat as good as I could, but I eat better than I did and stay within my points. I'm making a choice to put an effort into making time to exercise. I pray a lot! One step at a time if it's something you want to change and it's frustrating and annoying, but doable.
  3. I still remember two from elementary school. .... spends too much time reading and not enough interacting with others or socializing. Next quarter from the same teacher, ....is too social during class activities and needs to focus on the work at hand. I got a lot of comments about reading too much, but I was awkward and too much interacting led to me getting picked on. The teachers never seemed to notice that though. :tongue_smilie:
  4. Wow, I would not be OK with that. As I said, my experience was entirely, for lack of a better term, student led. The Young Life members never worked at or volunteered at our school. That a teacher would do that is really disconcerting.
  5. I was an atheist, I'm now a Christian. I was in a high school where Young Life was present. There were no adults in the school. It was all fellow students inviting me to get togethers. There were adults(college age) at the get togethers and they would have been happy to mentor or form relationships. The mentors came to campus with the students for things like football games or the prayer at the flagpole, but they were always open about who they were. I never felt any pressure to convert, in fact I told them that once they started talking about Creationism I was convinced Christianity wasn't for me. I was still always welcome at their events or with them. Never once were any of the mentors working, volunteering at the school, or working on relationships in the school that hadn't been initiated by a student attending a Young Life event outside of school. I have a positive view of Young Life based on my experience. If they are truly hiding who they are or volunteering at a school for the purpose of converting others I would be disappointed and angered.
  6. I told DS we were going to the library and I needed him to listen to mommy and not pull the books off of shelves. Then I asked him, "Are you going to listen to mommy at the library and keep your hands to yourself if she tells you to?" He gave me the biggest smile with his eyes just sparkling and he was clearly just a happy guy and said, "Nooooo." He hasn't been to the library in a few months and he ended up doing just fine and got very excited to see all the books he could reach. He only pulled one to the floor though!
  7. This is actually our favorite for regular pizza as well. It also works great for a BBQ pizza(we use BBQ sauce, hamburger, bacon, and cheddar cheese-not something that regularly appears!) For a thinner crust I like to use this one. http://www.hillbillyhousewife.com/pizzapage.htm
  8. Sometimes. I've never figured out the per loaf cost and my current recipe includes butter, because DH really likes soft sandwich bread and without some sort of fat I can't replicate that. It's probably a little cheaper then the $4 a loaf healthy bread here, but not by that much. We prefer the taste and it's more filling though. We eat less and are more satisfied, so it may even out. I also make our pizza crusts, hamburger rolls, dinner rolls, and other breads. DH makes biscuits. It's also handy to never have to run to the store just for bread and end up getting 5 other things. :)
  9. What do you mean by weird? Like odd hobby or collection, anti social, bad conversationalist, rude or weird like, "So glad you came over, here's your tinfoil hat so the aliens who work for the feds can't hear your thought?"
  10. The Healthy Bread in 5 is good, it uses more whole wheat, exotic flours and grains, and has some gluten free recipes. I like it, but the main is my go too. I can't afford all the different flours and grains right now though. The breads look amazing in the second book!
  11. There is a recipe for enriched bread, it has sugar and butter in it. I've used the recipe as written for awhile and now use some King Arthur white whole wheat, some pastry flour, and some white flour and it's really yummy. I've also reduced the butter. It slices well and my DH and toddler love it. We were used to store bought sliced bread and, for us, this a workable and tasty replacement.
  12. :iagree: I have a basically full jar that I need to throw away. I tried it, it's so gross. Not good on a spoon and even worse on bread. Someone at my MOPS group was gifted with a case of it and hated it so much that she brought in the whole case to give away to people there.
  13. We like football in our house, we like snacking, and we like funny commercials so most years the Superbowl is a fun distraction. It's not always a big event, but we enjoy it. My DH was born and raised in Wisconsin, so this year it has taken extra significance. Had the Pack lost to the Bears it would still be a big game, because I am a Bears fan- despite being raised in Chiefs country.
  14. Oh yes! My team is the Bears and my DH's team is the Packers. :glare: It's a friendly rivalry though, so we'll all be cheering the Pack on. They're going to be playing the Steelers who I know very little about. Basically terrible towels, Polamalu, and Roethlisberger.
  15. I'll be marking all the cleaning socks with a permanent marker and I will be keeping/washing them completely separately. That should help, it's how I do the diapers and he's OK with those now. Thanks all! These are great ideas and they will help me to quit using so many paper towels which should save us some money.
  16. Now that you mention that, it makes sense. I do that, but I do the laundry so he wouldn't know that automatically. Thanks!
  17. I think he has a thing about cloth items that touch fecal matter or vomit. We cloth diaper, but he doesn't care for it at all. I have to clean up all vomit or he throws up and he has a very hard time with dirty diapers. I throw away rags that clean up really bad messes, but I will re use rags that I used to clean a toilet a couple of times. When I asked him what bugged him he said he didn't understand why I wouldn't want to use something designed for cleaning and that I would always throw away. I've run some numbers to show what paper towel usage costs us, so that should get him on board. That's how I got him OK with cloth diapering.
  18. We have a toddler, a 3 year old lab, and 2 older cats. Gross messes happen and I've used paper towels for those. I also have tons of old socks with holes, mainly my DH's. He can wear out a pair of socks so easily. I've been saving them for rags. I realized the other day that I have a huge bag full of socks, so I'm using the socks for gross messes and just throwing them away. I can clean a toilet and wash the sock in bleach/soap a couple of times before it's no good, I can pick up and scrub cat vomit with old socks, and I can clean out a tub that the toddler pooped in and so on. He thinks it's nasty, but I don't see that much difference between a an old(clean) sock and a paper towel for cleaning up a mess. We have to wear socks, so I might as well get extra use out of them when they no longer serve their original purpose. I have plenty of room to store the old ones. What do you think?
  19. My state has a school district that offers a once a week full day class for homeschooled kids. The district gets money for each kid enrolled and runs one in several towns. I think that the kids are considered part time PS at that point? Anyway, the upside is that they have a huge curriculum library and you can check out materials at the beginning of the year for the full year. I don't know the logistics of this just yet, there was a mom at my MOPS group who was telling me a bit about it.
  20. :grouphug: to all who are waiting Congratulations Sara! Coming up on two years now, my water broke during the coin toss on Superbowl Sunday! My husband got over it really quickly and two days later, DS was born. :D
  21. Yes. Thank you. I really like the idea of having all the shelves be child height too. I have one little guy and he loves getting into....everything. Not sure I need more things in reach for him to make a mess with! :tongue_smilie:
  22. I've told my parents my intention to homeschool and they are supportive but quietly baffled. They became a bit more on board when I described some of the specific issues we had with our local schools and when I told my dad that I wanted to include him on field trips like hiking and camping. It's just outside the norm, so it's not something he would have ever thought of. My mom is concerned about play time with other kids and she wanted to be the Grandma that went to school plays and that kind of thing. My brother is concerned about socialization and that I would be teaching bad science. We had a great talk last time I visited him about different methods and curricula and what was possible. He did say that he feels like one on one teaching with a dedicated parent would produce an excellent education and that he's never met a homeschooler so he's going off stereotypes. He's a scientist and when I mentioned some of the math and science things I've found he was very interested. My MIL is fully supportive, but thinks it's going to be a ton of work. Maybe too much so. My FIL has reservations about socialization and tells me at every opportunity. He thinks there's good opportunities for education though.
