  1. Wow! Thanks so much! I have a lot to research! According to WTM book, we should be done with logic by 9th grade to free up time for rhetoric. If middle schoolers can't really grasp logic so young and have to do it later, am I wrong to assume, you would then not have enough time to take rhetoric and then use it in the junior and senior years?
  2. I am logic-challenged, but would love to learn. My dd will be in 7th grade next year and I want to start logic with her. I talked to Martin Cothran (Memoria Press) at a homeschool fair and, of course, he suggested his courses. I have read from many that his courses are very difficult, especially for those not yet in high school, but I don't want to wait that long to do logic. After all, shouldn't we study logic in the logic stage? Could some of you "veterans" give me some advice?
  3. I would love to be involved in a group rate and get the $100 discount. Is there a group organizing from this forum??
  4. Thanks, KarenNC. I was able to read it. I think I will need to wait until we finish 76 to see where to go from here.
  5. You all are the greatest! Every one of you have given great insight! We do VP history/Bible and literature, but VP does IEW, so we have not done their writing assignments since we have no clue how to do them! I don't follow the WTM method for my other subjects so basically we are not outlining in those. I was hoping WWS was going to give enough practice. SWB is probably assuming that most are doing that, so my dd might be a little behind here. I think we probably need to drop back and do some other types of outlining for a while and catch up. I do think WWS is a great program and I want to stay tuned for the books that are to come. BTW, has anyone done the Creative Writer? Is it any "lighter?" Since we are going to be ahead of SWB getting her writing books out in the next few years, it might be a good idea to use this one in the mean time.
  6. I have a 6th grader this year that I want to start in O1 next year. We have done all VP Bible and History, so I think we should be relatively ready (if we can get through WWS :) ) Does anyone know if the self-paced course will require that you read and do everything? I have heard from so many that doing all of it is just not realistic.
  7. KarenNC, I could not get your link to work for Art Reed. Could you post again.
  8. Today my frustration level took on new highs! My nearly 12 yo dd just did day 4 of week 27. Why, why, why do the excerpts have to be so unobvious at this level! I love the concepts, but I seriously had to study the excerpt on the giant redwood trees to figure out how to outline it!! Not the mention the "Death of a Star" excerpt. I have a master's degree in a physical therapy and I struggled with that one! I wish SWB would have taken it down a notch so the young students could really grasp the concepts before having very difficult topics to outline. I will say the literary analysis was enjoyable. I could do a whole book on that! Is there anything else out there that teaches outlining at a more appropriate level?
  9. I agree with Bloggermom. Start with level 3 because level 4 is very advanced for dictation.
  10. We did not have a prom at my christian high school - just a banquet, but since it only lasted until about 10 pm, some friends and I went a few blocks away to another hotel where there was a prom. Since we were dressed formally, we walked right in, danced a little, got bored and left. It didn't look like the big magical night described in a former post. I am not scarred at all for never attending my own prom. Now my wedding reception on the other hand was magical... I think our kids will be just fine!
  11. A new eye doc. recently said, "That has got to be the hardest job in the world! It is easier for me to be a doctor!" I beg to differ, but I will accept the comment as positive.:D
  12. Satori, would you come and organize my house!! I love your box!
  13. We just started 5th grade after using FLL levels 1-4. I was so spoiled with FLL because there is zero preparation and is still thorough. I would not have switched had there been a level 5. We are not doing all the written exercises in R&S - only about half. I don't like that it has no poetry memorization. Now I have to seek out poems. We'll see how long I last with it.
  14. I am glad I started in Prima Latina with my second grader and went on from there. It seems to be explained a little better in the more elementary texts.
  15. Ooh we are planning to read this one as well. We are reading Rolf and the Viking Bow right now and it has some old language too, but a great story! I started reading it aloud and then read ahead myself. I had to know what happened! Sheri
  16. Wow, thank you everyone! This thread has helped a lot as well as the You Tube video. I have been very hard on my dd9. As a result, she does not like dictation. She is in 4th grade and finishing WWE3. The modern passages especially from fiction books are much easier, but the nonfiction books that are older are more difficult. I also agree that the workbook does not follow the word limits that the text does. When comparing dictation that Jessie Wise does occasionally in 1st LL 4, WWE4 is quite difficult. I am going to relax, break it down into sentences and repeat the passage a few more times than instructed.
  17. Thanks Jo. I guess I am trying to push my daughter too much maybe. If level 4 can be used for Susan's 13 yo son, then I think I have time for my 9 yo daughter to practice, but I still don't see the purpose of memorizing a paragraph after only hearing it 3 or 4 times!
  18. Jo, I would like to see the Youtube video of SWB teaching her daughter. I am a little frustrated that the dictation gets so long. My 9 y.o. dd is in level 3 near the end and has no problem with narration, but some problem with the longer dictation. I am a little scared to go on to level 4. Anyway can you help me find that?
  19. I want to do introductory Geography next year for my dd who will be in 1st grade and wondered what has worked for you.
  20. My dd in K is basically tagging along with her big sis (3rd grade) in Astronomy and Earth Science. It is not required at all, but she has picked up MUCH more than I thought. My older dd didn't do a structured science in K and she loves science now.
  21. I use God's Design (Answers in Genesis). It has many different science fields of study available and is from a Young Earth Creation viewpoint. It is thorough and has experiments with almost every lesson. The materials needed are mostly things you already have around the house. Each lesson takes about 30 minutes depending on age level and depth you desire. Each book has 36 lessons. There are 12 books total (I think). You can do it 3 times per week and do it in four years. We started in 1st grade and did it once per week and in 2nd grade we do two times per week (two books per year). That way we will plan to finish by 6th grade and will move into Apologia for the upper grade science.
  22. My dd started Prima Latina in 2nd grade and is doing Latina Christiana now (3rd grade). It goes along with her English grammar pretty well, but it is a discipline for me. Susan Wise Bauer recommends doing Latin first and then a Modern Romantic Language will be so much easier. She has a schedule in The Well Trained Mind with many options. I may start my next dd in 3rd grade with Prima Latina because she doesn't memorize as well...we'll see how it goes. Getting a song curriculum first when they are younger might be good, but when it comes to Latin, you just have to drill everyday. Kids are great memorizers if they keep up, but sometimes the grammar is heavy for them if they haven't seen it in English first. I have never had Latin, only Spanish, so the concepts in Latin come easier for me, but the memorizing is another story. My dd blows me away!!!
  23. We did exactly the same thing with my dd 5 1/2 years old. She is working the Memoria Copybook I right now. I plan to do printing next year also because come 2nd grade, she'll need a little speed in writing in order to do her other subjects. I plan to do cursive in 2nd grade if all goes well and will continue printing for assignments. Probably 3rd grade she will do her assignments in cursive.
