  1. I don't serve whole roasted chicken because we'd need two. My idea: roast, remove meat, boil bones/skin/etc. for broth, make a pot of soup with 2/3 of the chicken meat and the frozen vegies. Add cooked rice, but in individual bowls so it won't absorb all the broth over night. That would last us two days. The third day I'd make the chicken pot pie Ann (elfgivas@yahoo.com) posted--yum!
  2. Yes, the charter school gives us $1600 per year per child. We can spend that on curriculum (non-religious) and/or activities. ETA: That also means we have a monthly meeting with a certificated teacher (we love ours, so not a problem for us), and yearly standardized testing (which my weirdo kids enjoy, lol). I do all teaching at home.
  3. We use a charter school, and spend most of that money on outside activities. I don't know what we'd do without it, but I do believe outside activities are important for our family starting around 10yo.
  4. We've used Chalkdust Math (the generic version) with great success. The book is college level geometry, so definitely challenging.
  5. Oh yes, I learned that lesson a few years ago when my dd was reading the Little House books. Hearing her refer to Indians as savages caught me off guard, but thankfully it was at home and not in a classroom. I was mortified that I hadn't thought to teach her about the negative stereotypes in the books. I was originally going to just let my 13yodd read GWTW, with a quick talk about how AA's are portrayed in the book, but upon rereading it myself I've decided to use it as a jumping off point for a deeper discussion.
  6. Is this a book you let your kids read without discussion? If not, do you have any references for good talking points? I'm rereading GWTW now, and I see so many things that I've missed in the past.
  7. Already opened? If so, meant to be refrigerated after opening? In the end, I guess I'd do a smell test.
  8. I am trying this recipe today, it looks absolutely delicious! I'll use velveeta instead of white american cheese since I already have some on hand. Queso Blanco Dip
  9. My dh is a huge fan of homeschooling. His parents were in education too (teacher/school counselor), and they've never made any negative--or positive--remarks.
  10. I'm right there with everybody else. There's a lot of solace in knowing we aren't alone, thanks OP for starting this thread.
  11. What a sweet friend you are. :grouphug: I will pray for her.
  12. I took ibuprofin. Here's the thread that I posted--I was weirded out by the leg thing too. http://forums.welltrainedmind.com/showthread.php?t=409597
  13. My kids and I had a virus this summer that made our legs ache. It was miserable, but it ran its course like any other virus.
  14. Ours is going up almost $200 to over $1800/mo. :( Thankfully, my husband's employer contributes $1000 to that. I'm grateful we have health insurance, but between gas prices, furlough days, and increasing food costs I feel like we are so much worse off financially than we were just a few years ago.
  15. You gorgeous thing--congratulations to you both!
  16. I'd be worried too. :grouphug: BUT... I was 19yo when I married my dh, and not a very mature 19yo. My parents had never met my dh. I'd only known him a year. But they were supportive, never said a word against it, and 23 (happily married) years later I still look to them as the model of good parenting of adult children.
  17. Looking forward to being reunited with my precious Elizabeth, Mary, and Francis. :001_wub: It's hard. My thoughts and prayers go out for you all. :grouphug:
  18. Oops, sorry for the misunderstanding. I was being silly because obviously those are amazing deals for 25 cents. :001_smile:
  19. My mom's a nurse, and she says it's important to have a family member there to advocate for you. I know it's not always possible, but I would not have sent my husband home if there were other viable options. Absent that, what can you do? Just your best, and it sounds like you did. :grouphug:
  20. I don't think so, the links aren't working? These were links to Cute Girls Hairstyles, Haute Brilliance, and Let's Make It Up. Try the search function. :) And thank you! I love this picture too. ♥
  21. My dd is totally into doing her hair too! Here are some of the girls she watches on youtube: http://www.youtube.com/my_subscriptions?feature=mhee&s=DVgDvY3EQ3L75xNz03IFso7MY-2-qkUUSUrojso9-g0 http://www.youtube.com/my_subscriptions?feature=mhee&s=DVgDvY3EQ3L75xNz03IFspTsn2Qyavx9TvilKPRzFGg http://www.youtube.com/my_subscriptions?feature=mhee&s=DVgDvY3EQ3L75xNz03IFst2szWnQRuwAtZcAh1Hg7PQ And here's a pic of my dd in one of her own creations. It's a braided headband with a side fishtail braid. :001_wub:
